- Bugscope Teamnice brochosomes
- Bugscope Teamyay!
- Bugscope Teamhello mrs. hannan, welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope TeamGood morning! Welcome to Bugscope!
- Bugscope Teamwe are just finishing up presets
- TeacherHi- we are very excited for this. My class will be here in about 10 min
- Bugscope Teamwe are done with presets, session is now unlocked
- Bugscope Teamok, we are ready for you anytime, if you want you can practice driving the scope now
- Bugscope Teamat any time, if you have any questions please just ask
- Bugscope Teamnice click to drive
- Teachercan we only drive from one computer?
- Bugscope Teamnice, you got it, with click to drive, you click to start moving, then click again to stop
- Bugscope Teamno, you can drive from any computer, but only one person can drive at one time
- Bugscope Teamwe can switch drive controls to anyone logged int (student, guest, anyone)
- Bugscope Teamyeah we can confer control to any computer you'd like
- Bugscope Teamif you want a student to drive, just tell us, and we can switch controls to that student
- Teacheris it easier for you if they drive from my computer or to switch to theirs?
- Teacherok- you answered the question
- Bugscope Teamwe prefer they drive from their own computer, so you are always on your system, asking questions via chat
- Teacherok
- Bugscope Team:)
- 8:59 am
- Teacherthere are going to be two different classes- the first one will be here 10-10:40 and then they will switch
- Bugscope Teamok, sounds good
- Teacherare we going to be looking at the insects that I sent in?
Bugscope Teamwe have all your insects that you send and then we included some of our own
- Bugscope Teamwe have those you sent and some of our stock today
- Teacherok
- Bugscope Teamwe have your small moth, weevils, assassin bug, and stink bug
- Bugscope Teamthis is pretty high mag on the bee antenna, kind of hard to get your bearings
- Teacherwhat magnification do you usually use?
- Bugscope TeamI would take it down a few notches so you can see where you are, get some perspective
- Bugscope Teamclick again to stop - we are still moving now
- 9:04 am
- Bugscope Teamyou can focus way high like this too, though
- Bugscope Teamnice
- Bugscope Teamcool
- Bugscope Teamthis is one of the placoid sensilla -- the flat place
- Bugscope Teamthey are sensory, probably chemosensory
- Bugscope Teaminsects magnification can be anywhere from 40x - 40,000x. but to really get a sense of where you are, make sure to lower the mag to 40-100x, then you can zoom in after
- Bugscope Teamit might be interesting, to see just where you really are, to drop the mag way down here
- Teacherstarting to get the kids logged in now
- Bugscope Teamcoolness
- Bugscope Teamthat should keep you out of trouble for a little while ;)
- 9:09 am
- Bugscope TeamHi 9!
- Studenthi
- Bugscope TeamWelcome to bugscope!
- Studenti really like learning about micoscopes.
- Studenthey
- Studenthi i am jamie from wt
- Bugscope TeamHello numerals!
- Bugscope Teamhi jamie, and other students, welcome to bugscope
- Studenthi
- Studenthi
- Studentwo thiis is awsome
- Bugscope Teamhi everyone!
- Studenthi i am gali and i go to winchester.
- Bugscope Teamokay Jamie is 10
- Studenthey boys out there
- Bugscope TeamGali is 9
- Studentcan you look at virsues
- Studentwhat are we looking at
- StudentI'm Scott
- Studentwhat r we looking at?
- Studentand what are we looking at
- Studenthello my name is andre what r we looking at right now
- Studentwhat are we looking at... im not sure what kind of bug that is
- Bugscope Teamviruses we would look at using a transmission electron microscope, which works a little differently
- Bugscope Teamwe are on the bee antenna right now at kind of a high mag
- Bugscope Teamthis is a bee
- Bugscope Team'doh
- Studentewww
- Studentcol
- Studentcool i have never seen a bee sooo close
- Studentwhat is the highest magnification
- Studentwhat is this?
- Studentmy dad is alergic to bees
- Bugscope TeamJamie do you want to drive?
- Studentwhat part?
- Studentwhat part
- Studentwhat is this
- Studentwhat part of the bee is this
- Bugscope Teamthis is 15,000x magnification. this scope can magnify up to 800,000x, but at that mag, insects would not be viewable
- Studentwhat part of the bee
- StudentWHAT IS THAT?
- Bugscope Teamthis is the antenna
- Bugscope Teamthis is a bee antenna, at very high mag
- StudentHi i am Derik
- Studenthow powerful is your micro scope
Bugscope Teamthe scope can magnify up to 800,000x, but for looking at bugs today, we'll rarely go past 30,000-40,000 mag
- Bugscope TeamI'm going to take the mag down for you...
- Studentwhat does7pm stand for
Bugscope Teamthe um in the lower left is a scale bar. it tells you how big the bug is. one um = one micron = one millionth of a meter
- Studentthis is awsome
- StudentI don't know what that is.
Bugscope Teamthis is a bee head
- Studentyikes!!!
- Studentwhat part is that of the bee
- Studentwe r going to have a test on Wednesday about micorscopes and things we have been looking at in class some of the things we have been looking at r all different types of animal bloods.
- StudentJamie is driving.
- Bugscope Teamnow you can see where we were, on the shaft of the antenna, and now we are looking at the bee's mouth
- Studentwhat the heck is that
Bugscope Teamthis is the head of a bee
- 9:15 am
- Studenthow much $ is this microscope
Bugscope Teamit was $600,000 when we bought it almost 10 years ago
- Student ooh!
- Studentwhat are the little hairs
- Studentwhat r all those little hairs?
Bugscope Teamthose hairs are called setae (see-tee), they are like cat whiskers in that they help the insect to sense its environment
- Bugscope Teamyou can see the jaws, which open sideways, and the tongue is below
- Bugscope Teamthe little hairs are called 'setae'
- StudentLet me know what that is
- Studentwhat are these hair
- StudentWow
- Studenthi my name wes morris
- Studentare those hairs
Bugscope Teaminsects are a lot hairier then they seem! All the hairs you see on insects we refer to setae (see-tee)
- Studentmy teacher says its a bees' head
- StudentCOOL!!!
- Studentis it only in black and white?
Bugscope Teamthe microscope uses electrons to gather the image, not light, because of that there is no color, only shades of grey
- Bugscope Teamyes, this is a bee head
- Studentis the bee grabbing anything?-mayzie
- Bugscope Teamthe thing at the bottom of the screen middle left is the tongue
- StudentThis is AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Studentwhat part of the head
Bugscope Teamwell, the mouth in below the middle of the image, there is a compound eye on the far right, and the stick thing in the upper left is an antenna. ask 10 to lower the mag to see a better image
- Bugscope Teamyou can see in the right upper edge, the eye
- Bugscope Teamone of the eyes
- Studentthat is cool
- Studentcan you see any type of cell?
- StudentCan you zoom it in
- Studenthow much money is the microscopes that u use?
Bugscope Teami think the scope cost about $750,000 in 1998?
- Studentr u doing dis all day
- Bugscope Teamwe can go as low as about 37x
- Studentis that the eye or mouth?-mayzie
Bugscope Teamthe mouth is made up of a hinged jaw that swings out like a gate. You can see one of its big eyes to the right of the screen
- StudentPlease Zoom It In
- Studentwhy are is it in black and white
- Bugscope Team10 has control
- Bugscope TeamI just gave Nico control
- Bugscope Teamwe can give control to anyone else though... only one person can control at a time
- Studentthat is cool
- Studentzoom in on the eye
- Bugscope Teamyay Nico
- Bugscope Teambees have a compound eye- meaning it is made up of many facets called ommatidia
- Bugscope Teamthe eye should be to the right
- Studentcan you see cells?
- Studentale what is the most magnifacation u can go up 2
Bugscope Teamit can mag up to 800,000x, but at that mag you wouldn't see insects well at all
- Studentcan you see the cells on a bug
- Studentwhere are u located?
Bugscope TeamWe are in the basement of a lab at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana
- Studentcan we see the bee cells
- Studentsorr i ment alex
- StudentWhat is that?
- Studentwhat is that ?
- Studentdoes the bee have skin?-mayzie
Bugscope Teamwell no, it has a exoskeleton instead, and the exoskeleton is like a hard shell, like armour, and the guts and nerves are underneath that exoskeleton
Bugscope TeamNot really skin like ours. The bee has a hard exoskeleton which is a barrier to the outside world just like our skin. But the bee has a skeleton on the outside and muscles on the inside--unlike humans and dogs and elephants, which have bones on the inside covered with muscles and then covered with skin
- Studentwow wow wow!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamwhat we see now are components of the chitin, the cuticle that covers insects like armor
- Bugscope Teamso Mayzie the bee does not have skin -- it has an exoskeleton
- 9:20 am
- Bugscope Teammeaning that its skeleton is on the outside
- Studentthe image is blurry right now
- Studentcan we zoom out a bit?-mayzie
Bugscope Teamnico has control now, ask nico to zoom out
- Studentwhat's the chitin?
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope Teamyeah it is blurry, but you can focus, Nico can
- Studentcan u put gali in control??
- StudentWOW!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamchitin is like what our fingernails are made of
- Studentput 8 in control
- Studentput 8 in control
- Studentwhat is that dent?-mayzie
- Studentlets zoom out
- Studentcate do u like the university and would u recomend it
Bugscope Teamit's a pretty nice campus. Lots to do, but outside of champaign-urbana, everything is pretty much cornfields. So I guess it depends if you are fine with that :p
- Studentis it possible to see in color??
Bugscope Teamyes, it is possible to color the black and white images AFTER they are taken, we can use elemental analysis to color them, so it's realistic
- Studentnumber nine is Gali
- Studenthow big is they microscope -andre
Bugscope TeamThe microscope is the size of a desk--but taller
- Studentand do u think it's fun
- Studentmy name is also scott
- Studentis it really small?
- Bugscope TeamGali you have control.
- Bugscope TeamHi Jamie!
- Studentwhats the puffy thing?
- Bugscope TeamBees can't feel through their exoskeleton, that is why they have so many setae (hairs) which stick through their exoskeleton and connect with the nervous system
- Bugscope TeamYeah 5 Hi Scott
- StudentIt is fun to control
- Studentdo you have fun lokking at bugs
Bugscope Teamoh yeah, this is a blast, we love doing bugscope
- StudentWHAT IS THAT DENT!!!???-MAYZOE
Bugscope TeamMayzie the dent is apparently a small pore in the jaw or the vestiture on the head
- Studentcan 15 be in controll
- Studenti know
- Studenti bet big
- Studentthanx i am now in control!!
- Studentwhat are the hairs called?!?
Bugscope Teamsetae
- Studentmay u please put andre in control next please please please
- Studentthis is cool
- StudentWOW!!!!
- Studentdoes this bee still have its stinger?
- StudentMAYZO???
- Studentit's blurry
- Studentcool
- Studentwhat other bugs will we look at? karolina
- Studentwhat are those lines
- Studentwooowww!
- StudentIt lookes dead
Bugscope Teamall the insects we put in the microscope are dead. If they weren't they would be too juicy for the microscope to pump down to a vacuum state, and they would also die because of the lack of air
Bugscope Teamyep, all the insects are dead in the scope
- Studenthow big r da microscopes at the university
- Bugscope TeamWhen you have control one of the things you can do is choose -- d'oh Cate beat me to it -- from among the presets along the right side of the chat
- StudentOOOHHH
- Studentcool
- Bugscope TeamJamie we did not find the stinger
- 9:25 am
- StudentAAAAAAAA!!!
- StudentWhoh
- StudentCoool
- Bugscope TeamNice mosquito guys!
- Bugscope TeamThis is a mosquito.
- Studentwow1
- Studentis that an eye
- Studentis that the head
- Studentwhat is that
- Guestthats awesome
- StudentWhat part is this
- Guestwhat part is that
Bugscope Teamwe are looking at the "face" of the mosquito
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope Teamthe eyes are the curved things with all of the round balls
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mosquito
- StudentThis is Awsome
- Studentmy sworn enemy up close!NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!-mayzie
- Guestis that the eyes
- Studenti chose to use the mosquito. isnt it cool?
- Bugscope Teamroundish balls
- Bugscope Teamthe bumpy things are the eyes, the two sticks coming toward us are its antennae
- Studentwhat is that?- Andrew
- Studenteww it looks like a mouse
- Bugscope TeamYes 9 is Gali, right?
- Studentwow misquitoes are hairy!
- Studentmy picture went black
- StudentWhat is that?
- Bugscope Team8 hit refresh on your browser
- Studenti changed it!!
- Studenthello?
- Studentwhat does the claw do
- Bugscope Teamthis is cool -- it has a scale and a pollen grain on it
- Bugscope Teamyes, if your screen goes black, try hitting refresh (F5)
- Studentwhat is that?-mayzie
Bugscope Teamthis is a claw on a beetle
- Studentdo mosquitos have beaks-andre
Bugscope Teamsort of like a beak--they have a long pointy proboscis that they use to eat. Only female mosquitos bite; male mosquitos eat flower nectar and sap
Bugscope Teamwell, yes they do, but they aren't called beaks, they are called proboscis's
- Bugscope Teamclaws are used by insects the same way we use our hands
- Studenti am in control what r those sharp things?
- StudentIs that part of that mosquito?
- Studentdid the bee still have its stinger on?
- Studentwhat are those claws? Karolina
- Bugscope TeamJamie the bee had lost its stinger
- Studentis that mold?
- StudentWhy does it have a claw
Bugscope TeamThe claws help them to hold on to surfaces
- Bugscope TeamKaroline the claws are on a beetle
- Studentoh i once caught a violet ground beetle do you have any of those?-mayzie
- Bugscope Teamthis is cool
- Studentwow what r those
Bugscope Teamwe are on one of the bee legs. these are tenent setae- special setae that allow it to walk on walls. they act like velcro
- Bugscope Teamif you take the mag down you can start to see where we are
- Studentwhat is that?
- Studentwhat is this
- Student???
- Bugscope Teampollen grain, now, on the bee tongue
- 9:30 am
- Studentwhat is that
- StudentCOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teammore tenent setae
- Studentare those hairs and what do they do
Bugscope Teamthese hairs are called tenent setae, and they help the insect stick to walls and such
- Studentthis is soooo cool. it looks coral a little.
- Bugscope Teamthese tenent setae probably act more like suction cups
- StudentIs this pollen?
- Bugscope TeamSome bees have specialized setae on the flat parts of their legs that are called "pollen baskets". The bees gather pollen, stick the pollen to the hairs on its leg, and bring the pollen back to the hive
- Bugscope Teama lot of times we make the presets so you will wonder whether they are and want to take the mag down to see
- StudentCool
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentis that the mouth
- StudentAAAAAAA!!!!
- Studentthis is a spider head.
- Bugscope TeamMayzie you are in luck
- StudentThis is COOL!!!
- Studentyeah!!
- Bugscope Teamsee those 4 bumps between the legs, those are eyes!!!
- Bugscope Teamyou can see four of the eyes
- Bugscope Teamthey are called simple eyes, because they have just a single lens in each
- Studentw
- StudentWHAT IS MOST MAGNAFACTION
Bugscope Teamwell, for bugscope images are best viewed no more than 40,000x, but the scope is capable of 800,000x
- Studentooh, is that a spider head
- Bugscope TeamJamie weevil
- StudentWhat is this?
- Studentthis looks like a cactus!
- Studentwhats a weacel?-mayzie
- Studentwhat is a weavel???????
Bugscope Teama weevil is a beetle in the family curculionidae. They are the most diverse group of insects on the planet!
- StudentThat lookes like a cactus
- StudentA Weavel
- Guesthow did you get that
- Studentwhat is that
- StudentCOOOOOOOOOL!!!
- Studenttransfer the driver seat to number1
- StudentWhat is that?
- Studentwhat is thart
Bugscope Teamthe spikes are part of the pollen grain- makes them sticky, and the little balls are brochosomes
- Studentis that a leg??????????
- Bugscope TeamThey eat plants or parts of plants.
- Bugscope Team#1 has control now
- Studentwhat are those little things that r like little circles.
Bugscope Teamthose are called brochosomes, unique to the leafhopper
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentthanks
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope Teamthese are brochosomes, from a leafhopper, on a pollen grain on the antenna of a bee
- GuestHow did you get this?
Bugscope TeamWe looked around until we found it on this sample
- Studentwhat are we looking at right now
Bugscope Teamthis is a pollen grain, with brochosomes on it, all on a bee antenna
- StudentA POLLEN GRAIN?
Bugscope Teamtotally! you are right!
- Studentthat scope is powerful-mayzie
- Bugscope Teamyep these are the things that make you sneeze!
- 9:35 am
- Studentlook at the little dots behind the puffs
- Studentwhat is this
- Studentwhat is this?
- StudentWhat are those spikes
- Studentwhat do the spikes do
- StudentWhat is a Brochasome?
Bugscope Teambrochosomes are microscopic secretory granules produced by leafhoppers
- Bugscope Team13 this is a bee antenna
- Studenthow many cells are roughly in a pollen grain??????
- Studentwhat are those spikes
- Studentis there different types of pollen?-mayzie
Bugscope Teamevery different type of plant has a different type of pollen
- StudentIs this a bee antena?
- Bugscope Team13 and 18 the spikes on the pollen grain help it stick to things
- StudentCate what is that thing in the left hand corner thats hanging over the edge?
- StudentCool !
- GuestWhat's the smallest bug you have looked at?
- Studentis it wet?
- Studentwwwoooowwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamthis is a spiracle, which is what insects beathe through
- Studentare those hairs in the spiricle?????????????????????????????
- StudentA spiricle?
- Bugscope Teamthe leafhopper "anoints" things with those brochosomes
- GuestWhat is a spiracle?
Bugscope TeamIt is an insect nostril
- Studentcool
- StudentIt breaths thru that?
- Bugscope TeamThe leafhopper brushes brochosomes onto their egg masses to protect them from the environment
- Bugscope Teamyes Nico it draws air in through the spiracles
- Studentwhy is it glowing
- Studentis that an eye?
- Studenthow far can u zoom in??
Bugscope Teamthe scope can zoom into 800,000x, but you really won't see much good images past 40,000x
- Bugscope Teamthe thing that looks like a 'p' is the Greek letter 'mu'
- StudentCool
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentwhat is that spike ?
- Studentit looks like it is glowing!
- Studenthave you ever looked at a cell?-mayzie
- Bugscope Team(bad grammar--the leafhopper brushes onto its--geez. Syntax)
- StudentThis is fun
- Bugscope TeamGali you can see that if we went in further we would not be able to see much
- Bugscope Teamhexagons!
- StudentAn EYE?
- 9:40 am
- Bugscope Teamyes, an eye, no kidding!
- Studentthey look like a honey com
- Bugscope Teamall those bumps are facets, each with a lens in it
- Bugscope Teamthose bumps are called ommatidia
- Studentis that an eye
- Student what are those shiny things?
- Bugscope TeamYes! It's a compound eye, and it does look like a honeycomb
- Studentwwwwwoooooowwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Studentis this the same thing but zoomed out?
- StudentHow does he see
Bugscope Teamflying insects usually have compound eyes, and they help them fly a great deal - they have good vision
- Bugscope TeamGali yes
- Studentwhat uis that
- Studentcool
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentmay i drive?-mayzie
- Studentis that a eye
- Studentswotch the drive to Derik T.
- Bugscope Teamwe are looking at a moth head from the side
- Studentis the whole thing connected it looks like they arent?
- StudentI said HOW DOES HE SEE???
Bugscope Teamwe think it sees multiple images form different angles and those images are collected and put together in the brain
- Studentswith the drive to derik t
- Studentswith driver to 5
- GuestHow do you get these bugs?
Bugscope TeamYou guys sent some of these insects. We also get donations from entomology students who made collections for classes, but don't want to keep the collection anymore
- Studentswith the drive to 8/ Derik Tillman
- Studentthe teachers said i could drive-mayzie
- Studentwhat are those holes
- Bugscope TeamYay!
- Bugscope TeamMayzie try driving now.
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentis that mold
- StudentThats So COOL!!!!
- Studentare those bumps eyes
- Bugscope Team15 it is not mold here -- we are looking at scales
- Studentlet me be the driver 5/ scott steiner
- Bugscope Team18 the round things are the eyes
- StudentIt looks Harry
- Studentwe are swithing classes
- Studentwe r switching classes
- Studentbye bye
- Bugscope Teamawww...
- Bugscope Teambye!
- Bugscope Teamok, thanks students, you did great!
- Bugscope TeamThank you!
- Studentwe are swithing classes
- Studenta new group is coming or the other class-mayzie
- Studentbye bye from andre
- Studentwe are switching classes now
- Guestwe are switching classes now and there are more people coming
- Bugscope Teambye bye
- Bugscope Teamthank you for all your great questions and driving :)
- Guestbye
- Studenta pleasure talking with you
- Bugscope Teamyou did great students
- Studenthi
- Bugscope Teamhello, welcome to bugscope!
- 9:45 am
- Guestthanks

- Student18
- Studenthello
- Studenthi
- Bugscope Teamwelcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Teamhello all
- Bugscope TeamHello Amanda, and Noah, and 18
- Studenthello
- Bugscope Teamthis is a moth, lying on its side
- Bugscope Teamyou can see that one of its antennae is missing
- Studentwhich computer is the driver now?
- Studentwhere are the bugs?
- Studentwitch computer is the driver
- Bugscope Teamno 3
- Bugscope Team3 has control right now
- Studenthello
- Studenti can't see any bugs
Bugscope Teamif your screen is black, hit refresh (F5)
- Bugscope Teamjada can you see the moth?
- Studenthi
- Bugscope Teamyou can change which insect we are looking at by clicking on a preset in the lower right of the screen
- Bugscope TeamJada hit f5
- Bugscope TeamHi Sammy!
- Studentis any one here
- Studenthi scot
- Bugscope Teamhi sammy
- Studenthow do you zoom in
- Bugscope Teamlet's give Jada control
- Studenthow do you zoom in on the bug
- Studenthello
- Bugscope Teamjada, i just gave you control, you can zoom in either mag, yeah, there ya go!
- Studentwhat is the magnification on your microscopes
Bugscope Teamthis scope can magnify up to 800,000x, but the best images for insects are at no more than 40,000x
- StudentHi
- Studentall of you study bugs right?
- Studentwho is 14
- Studentyea
- Bugscope TeamJada Annie is the one who is a real entomologist
- Studentwhat is this bug?
Bugscope Teamthis is a small moth that one of your classes sent in to ys
- Studenthi this is amanda!!!
- Studenthi alex
- Bugscope Teamyes, I am a graduate student working on my PhD in entomology
- Bugscope Teamhi amanda, hi sammy
- 9:50 am
- Bugscope Teamthe rest of us have been doing this for a while and think it is super interesting - we are always learning about bugs
- Studentwhat is this bug
- Studenthi
- Studenthow do you zoom in
Bugscope Teamright now, jada has control, so only SHE can zoom in, ask jada to zoom in
- StudentHi my name is Amon what's your name bugscope friend
- Bugscope Team5 this is a moth
- Studentcool
- Studentannie what is your major study?
Bugscope TeamI study chemical communication in longhorned beetles
- Studenthi
- Studenthi
- Studenthi this is maddie!
- Bugscope TeamHi Sammy
- Studenthi now this is maddie!
- Studentis this a fly
- Bugscope TeamHi Sam, and Maddie!
- Bugscope Teamonly one person can control the scope at a time. if someone else wants control, ask us to switch control
- Bugscope Teamthis is a moth, Samantha
- Studenthow long have you been a scientist
Bugscope TeamI started graduate school in 2003, but I majored in biology in college
- Bugscope TeamHi Wells
- Studenthi scot
- Studenthi
- StudentWhat is the magnification?
- Bugscope TeamSammy I have been doing this for a long time
- Studentscot how long have you been a scientist
- Studentwow! thats soo awesome! it really zooms in!
- Bugscope Teamthe mag is at 608x
- StudentWhat r the things that look like fins?
Bugscope Teamthose are scales
- Studentcan we look at the head of an insect
Bugscope Teamjada you have control, click on a preset to go there
- Studentwow!
- Studentthis is awesome
- Studentwhat are those feather things
- Bugscope TeamJada you have control and can drive west to the head
- Studenthow much experience do you all have
- Studentwhat other bugs do you have
- Studentwhat kind of bugs do you have
- StudentWhat is entomology?
Bugscope TeamEntomology is the study of insects
- StudentA moth wow
- Bugscope TeamWells I have been doing electron microscopy for 25 years
- Studentso what is it
- Studentso what is it?
- Studentscot what do you study?
- Studentcool
- Studenthello
- Bugscope Teamclick again to stop jada!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamjada, click again
- Studentwhat is this???
- Bugscope Teamjada, click again
- Bugscope TeamAmon I got hired to help set this up 10 years ago
- Studentare those scales
- Bugscope Teamjada, click again in the image
- Studentcool
- Studenteveryone whose talking are all u in the same lab and now eachother
Bugscope TeamWe do all know each other, but we are not in the same place. Everyone else is at the Beckman Institute, and I am at my apartment.
- Studentwhat is the magnification, Scott?
- Bugscope TeamAmanda I train people to use the microscopes now. I have a degree in English and Biology
- Bugscope TeamThe mag is 608x right now
- Studentscot how much experience do you have??
- Bugscope Teamjada, click in the image to stop moving it, then you can click on another ppreset
- Studentcool
- Studentwhat is goin on
Bugscope Teamjada has control, and needs to click in her image to stop the movment
- Bugscope TeamWells I have been doing this (electron microscopy) since 1983
- StudentI cant see any thing
- StudentI see static
- Studenthow do i stop it!!!
Bugscope Teamyou needed to click in the image to stop. click once to start moving, click again to stop
- Studentwhat bug do you find the most fasinating
Bugscope TeamLonghorned beetles are my favorite insects--that is what I research
- 9:56 am
- Bugscope Teamtroy you now have control
- Bugscope TeamTroy just a sec.
- Studentthats cool
- Bugscope TeamI am trying to write my dissertation chapters
- Studentthe picture keeps changing1
- Studenthow long have you been a scientist
- Studentwhat bug is this now?
- StudentTroy is driving now
- Studentannie what is that
Bugscope Teamright now this is the edge of the world
- Studentsomething is wrong with this thing
- Studenthow long have u been studying bugs
Bugscope TeamI have been studying bugs since college--so since about 2001.
- Studentscot, how did u figure out about this?
Bugscope TeamMaddie we had good programmers to help us get control of the microscope.
- Studentcan i have control
- Bugscope Teamwells has control
- Studenttroy could you stop moving it
- Studentannie why do you like longhorned beetles?
Bugscope TeamBecause they make up one of the largest groups of insects, because they live in many different places and have specialized to eat many many different types of plants, because they range in size from 2 mm to 17 cm, they squeak, and not very much is known about them
- Studentwhat do u mean by the edge of the world
- Studentcan i have control please!!
- Studentwhats HAPPENING!
- StudentScot what is your favorite bug\
- StudentI still see static
- Studentits very cool!
- Studentwhos in control now!
- Studentwhos controling now?
- Studentwhat is the bug
- StudentScot what is your bug?
- Bugscope Teamwe just locked the session, we will control the scope from now on
- Studentare there bugs in ant actica
Bugscope Teamyes, it seems there are. Most of them are parasites, like lice which live in the feathers and fur of birds and seals, where they are protected from the harsh climate for much of the time. Collemola (springtails) are the only free-living insects. They feed on algae and fungi, and remain dormant in winter.

- Studentwhat bug is this
- Studentok!
- Bugscope Teamthis is a bee, the antenna
- Studentwhat is the most common type of bug
Bugscope TeamI am not sure if anyone really knows what the most common insect in the world is. It varies from place to place and from time to time. There are times when there are huge swarms of locusts or cicadas or mayflies--but even then it is hard to say that those insects are the most common in the world. In terms of biomass, termites and ants make up a significant part of the biomass of many environments--more than monkeys or elephants or humans.

- Studenteeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwww
- Studentwow!
- Studentis that a fly eye
- Studentis this still the moth
- Bugscope Teamthis is below the bee's eye
- Studentwhat are those hairs
Bugscope Teamthose hairs are called setae (see-tee) they help the insect to sense its environment
- Bugscope Teaminsects have a hard exoskeleton that is like if you were wearing a suit of armor. If you just had the suit on, you would bump into stuff and not really be able to feel it. Insects have holes in their "armor" with setae (insect hairs) sticking out that are connected to nerves underneath. These setae allow the insect to sense their environment.
- Studentwhat are we lookin at
Bugscope Teamnow this is a scale laying on a bee eye
- Studentthats gross
- StudentWhat kind of power does your scope have.
Bugscope Teamit can mag up to 800,000x, but for insects it's best to stay below 40,000x
