- Teacherwe are here!!!
- Bugscope Teamhello, welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Teamclark, you are free to start controlling the scope.
- Bugscope Teamthat is just a piece of debris of some sort on the eye
- Bugscope Teammaybe a piece of leaf
- Bugscope TeamClark: I would recommend using the Full-Screen option in Internet Explorer which you can toggle with the F11 key
- Teacherdude that is awesome, from dustin
- Teacherthe class will start in just a minute!
- Bugscope Teamhey dustin!
- 11:56 am
- Teacheris this an ant??
- Bugscope Teamthis is a wasp
- Bugscope Teambut it does look like an ant
- Bugscope TeamI think ants' eyes are farther back and are usually smaller
- Bugscope Teamhi annie! session has started, clark is driving and looking at a wasp head.
- Bugscope Teamexcellent.!
- Bugscope Teamarr, maitie...
- Bugscope Teamgreat job talking like a pirate Alex haha
- 12:01 pm
- TeacherWhen di dbugscope start? when did the university get the microscope?
Bugscope TeamThe microscope got delivered around Christmas of 1997 and I joined the Bugscope project as it was starting in the spring of 1998
- Teacherhow big is the microscope unit?
Bugscope TeamThe microscope itself is about the size of two mini-fridges stacked on top of each other. The rest of the small room however is filled with supporting equipment
- Bugscope TeamBugscope started in the spring of 1999, in March.
- Bugscope Teamhere is a picture of the scope: http://www.itg.uiuc.edu/ms/equipment/microscopes/esem/
- Bugscope TeamThe microscope is about the size of a large desk.
- Bugscope TeamThe column is about 6 feet tall -- the column is over the body of the 'scope.
- Bugscope TeamWe got the microscope at the end of 1998, beginning of 1999.
- Bugscope TeamChas was here with us at the beginning, as a sophomore in high school.
- Bugscope Teamnow he's a grad student
- Teacherwhat is this?
Bugscope TeamThese look like pollen grains tangled up in the setae of the bug
- Bugscope Teamthese are pollen grains
- Bugscope Teamon the body of the wasp
- 12:06 pm
- Bugscope Teamif you take the mag down, when you feel like it, you will be able to see where you are on a more macro level
- Bugscope TeamAh, very cool. I love it when the setae have cool textures like that
- Bugscope Teamthose are kind of cool looking setae too, the way they twist around
- Bugscope Teamsort of like spider setae
- Teacherhow do they coat the bug for magnification?
- Bugscope Teamnow we are pushing the mag, and the electron beam can move the sample around
- Bugscope Teamwe use a sputter coater
- Bugscope Teami am back!
- Bugscope Teamwe coat them with gold-palladium
- Teacherannie we have missed you
- Bugscope Teamwe have a gold-palladium target; we pull a vacuum on it, we create an atmosphere of 50 mTorr Argon.
- Bugscope TeamI am here for your questions, ask away!!!
- Bugscope Teamthis is just a small part of the claw, you can zoon out to see the whole thing
- Bugscope Teamthe plasma forces atoms of gold-palladium off of the target and they rain down on the sample, coating it with a few nm of Au/Pd
- Teachercan you get the picture of the hornet stinger?
- 12:11 pm
- Bugscope Teamyou should be able to drive to the hornet stinger
- Bugscope TeamCate may be able to help direct you
- Bugscope Teamthere's another pollen grain
- Bugscope Teamnice one
- Bugscope Teamthat is awesome
- Bugscope Teamragweed
- Teacherwe cant drive our server is too slow
- Teachercan you do it for us?
- Bugscope Teamokay we should be able to find it for you
- Teacheris that the stinger?
- Bugscope Teamthe tip is barely visible
- 12:17 pm
- Bugscope TeamI will go to the actual hornet, as you asked
- Bugscope Teamwell sometimes we don't get to see the stinger
- Bugscope Teamthis is where it would be
- Bugscope Teama stinger is a modified ovipositor
- Teacherare you still driving?
- Bugscope Teamyes I am driving to the caddisfly
- Teacherwhere are we going?
- Bugscope Teamon the abdomen now
- Bugscope Teamwhere would you like to go?
- Teachermouth then we will control
- Bugscope Teamgreat!
- Bugscope Teamcan you see where we are now?
- Bugscope Teamthe mouth is like that of an ant -- very busy looking
- 12:22 pm
- Bugscope TeamIs this an ant?
- Bugscope Teamlooks as if it had swallowed, partially, another small insect
- Bugscope Teamlooks weird
- Bugscope Teamthis is the caddisfly Annie-chan.
- Bugscope Teamok....I thought I was going crazy
- Bugscope Teamwell maybe it has something to do with Pirates
- Bugscope TeamOOF
- Bugscope TeamMAYbe.....
- Bugscope Teamcaddisflies comprise a small order of aquatic insects
- Bugscope TeamThe adults look like non descript brown moths with long antennae
- Teacherwhat is this?
- Bugscope TeamThey are closely related to moths and butterfies
- Bugscope Teamit is a setae on a wing
- Bugscope Teamfuzzy wing
- Bugscope Teamseta i guess
- Teacherwhat is this?
- Teachero sorry.
- Teacheri love you
- Teachersorry, this student has removed from the computer--clark
- 12:27 pm
- Bugscope Teamno problemo
- Teacherhow much does the microscope cost??
- Bugscope Teamback in a sec
- Teacherok
- Bugscope Teamthe scope cost $750,000
- Teacherjeez
- Bugscope Teamit's hard to tell -- it's like buying an expensive car with lots of options
- Teacherwhat is this??
- Bugscope Teamif you decrease the magnification you will see it's a coiled up proboscis
- Bugscope Teamok hill you have control
- Bugscope TeamMeredith is on!
- TeacherHi we are back!
- 12:32 pm
- Bugscope TeamThe mag is super high -- that's why there is not much to see.
- Bugscope Teamif you take the mag down you can see where you are right now
- TeacherOur class is over, now. So we will let you go for awhile. Thank you so much.
- Bugscope TeamIs that it for the day or just for now?
- TeacherCan we reconnect at 1:45?
- TeacherI have a break, my last class comes in at 1:30...
- Bugscope Teamsure we have the 'scope 'til 2, and 3 if you want
- TeacherI also wanted to make sure you have canceled the Fri session for Mahomet-Seymour
- Bugscope Teamyes we signed you out till 3 for the microscope
- Bugscope Teamoh Okay
- Bugscope Teamwait, the friday session is cancelled?
- Bugscope Teamyeah because we got extra time on Monday
- Bugscope Teamahh, got ya.
- Bugscope TeamMeredith, I am checking out the scope
- Bugscope TeamMonday we were able to get that other class in.
- TeacherGreat see you at about 1:45. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamsee you soon...
- Bugscope Teamthat's okay..... would it be okay for me to drive the scope for a bit
- Bugscope Teamthis is the tongue of the butterfly
- Bugscope Teamyou bet
- Bugscope Teamgo for it andres!
- Bugscope TeamThanks
- 12:37 pm
- 12:42 pm
- 12:48 pm
- TeacherHi Andres...its Lori
- TeacherI will tell her you stopped by
- TeacherI have study hall right now!!
- Bugscope TeamThese are the ocelli.
- Bugscope TeamThe sort of primitive eyes on top of the head bewteen the much larger compound eyes.
- Bugscope TeamAndres the compound eye will have more detail in it.
- Bugscope TeamThese often are smooth like this.
- 12:53 pm
- Bugscope TeamIt might be cool to move to a view of one of the big eyes and look at the individual eye facets -- the ommatidia.
- Bugscope TeamHi Lori
- Bugscope TeamAndres you can see the edges of the compound eyes upper left and lower right.
- Bugscope TeamYou can see that they have tiny hexagonal facets.
- Bugscope TeamThis is the thorax.'
- Bugscope Teamand now you can see the claws, some of them.
- Bugscope Teamnice
- Bugscope TeamI wish I knew more about insect anatomy
- Bugscope Teamwell this is the claw, at the end of the tarsi, which are the 'forearm' segments
- Bugscope Teamwhich insect is it?
- Bugscope Teamsome claws, in insects that can climb walls and walk on glass, have a pad or two below them called the pulvillus.
- 12:58 pm
- Bugscope Teamthis is a wasp
- Bugscope Teamthe pulvillus has a tiny carpet of setae on it called tenent setae
- Bugscope Team sometimes they look like calla lilies
- Bugscope Teamor suction cup darts
- Bugscope Teamthose stick to the surface and allow the insect to walk, like on the ceiling, for example.
- Bugscope Teamabdomen
- Bugscope Teamwe looked for a stinger earlier and found just the very tip
- Bugscope Teamthis is the butterfly right?
- Bugscope Teambecause it has tiny scales all over it
- Bugscope Team's a little awry in death
- Bugscope TeamHi Mandy!
- GuestHello!
- 1:03 pm
- Bugscope Teamhello!
- Bugscope TeamAndres is driving the 'scope just now.
- Bugscope TeamWe'll have to get him to give you a tour.
- Bugscope TeamYou can see someone's claw here.
- Bugscope Teamawesome is one of the words we like to hear :)
- Bugscope Teamnot sure where we are -- Cate?
- Bugscope TeamDragon fly
- Bugscope Teamdragonfly
- Bugscope TeamMandy we are all sitting in dfferent rooms down here. Alex is in the 'scope room.
- Bugscope TeamIts eyes are deflated a bit.
- Bugscope TeamAndres see if you can zoom in on that.
- Bugscope Teamit's a bit crushed
- Bugscope Teamsome of them came in a little flat
- Bugscope Teamwith a dragonfly sometimes you don't see as much detail in the compound eye
- Bugscope Teamdoes mandy want to drive the scope?
- Bugscope Teamfour wings
- 1:08 pm
- Bugscope TeamBlack ant
- Bugscope Team'newer' insects often have two wings; the other wings are replaced by halteres, which function like gyroscopes to compensate for the movement of the wings.
- Guestif I had time, I gotta get going in a minute
- Bugscope TeamMandy you are welcome to drop in whenever we are on.
- Bugscope TeamClaw!
- Bugscope Teamlater MK, keep it real.
- Guestthanks Scott!
- Bugscope TeamThank you!
- Guestsee ya!
- Bugscope TeamShe always keeps it real.
- Bugscope Teamhow to focus on the claw and not the background
- Bugscope TeamSee you!
- Bugscope TeamAndres you can do it.
- Bugscope Teamtry it
- Bugscope Teampull the focus to a shorter working distance
- Bugscope Teamif it gets worse, -- well you have it now dude
- Bugscope Teamnice...
- Bugscope Teamthat is a nice shot
- Bugscope Teamgreat job
- 1:13 pm
- Bugscope Teamthis ant could probably not walk on the ceiling
- Bugscope Teamit would not be able to stick well
- Bugscope Teamcool
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mechanosensory seta -- a hair. on the wing of this caddisfly.
- Bugscope Teamoop I keep getting stuck on the phone
- 1:18 pm
- Bugscope Teamaccording to wiki, a caddisfly life is very shortlived, only 1-2 weeks
- Bugscope TeamWell. this was great fun. But I do have to go now
- Bugscope TeamThanks everyone!!
- Bugscope Teamok andres, it was great having you here.
- Bugscope Teamok thanks for trying out the scope
- 1:24 pm
- Bugscope Teamback in a sec
- Bugscope Teamback
- 1:37 pm
- Bugscope TeamI am back
- Bugscope Teamyo einna
- Bugscope Teamwe are waiting for 1:45 to come around
- Bugscope Teamyo xela
- Bugscope Teamheh
- Bugscope Teamthat name still makes me laugh
- Bugscope Teami like robert = trebor. hey trebor, what's the word trebor.
- Bugscope Teamtrebor lazarevich. that's my son's name if i ever have one.
- 1:42 pm
- Bugscope TeamTtocs.
- Bugscope TeamYaj.
- Bugscope TeamNosnibor.
- Bugscope Teamnosnibor!!!!
- Bugscope TeamAnnie's last name is what pirates say.
- Bugscope Teamhey---it is talk like a pirate day!!!
- Bugscope Teamarrr, maitie, gimme yer loot!
- Teacherwe are here
- Bugscope Teamwelcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Teamyou can start controlling the scope anytime, there ya go!
- TeacherThank You
- TeacherWhat Are we looking at
- Bugscope TeamIs this the caddisfly larva?
- Bugscope Teamhmm, not sure, annie might know. try zooming out and that might tell us.
- 1:48 pm
- Bugscope Teamwell, these are setae. some of the setae are broken off.
- TeacherAny clues on what we are looking at yet
- Bugscope Teamthe caddisfly had wings, do the larva have wings?
- Bugscope Teamyou could try to decrease the magnification
- Bugscope TeamLarvae do not have wings
- Bugscope Teamwe think this is a caddishfly, and we are looking at it's setae on it's leg.
- Teachernew
- Bugscope Teamtry a preset, good idea.
- Bugscope TeamIf you reduce the magnification, we can give you a better ID
- Bugscope Teamthe preset has moved a bit, try navitaing up slightly
- Bugscope Teamah, this is a dragonfly
- Bugscope TeamOr a damselfly...I can't quite tell
- TeacherWhere would the wing be
- 1:53 pm
- Bugscope Teami believe it is on the other side (on the left)
- Bugscope Teamlower left i believe, allthough they might have come off on this bug? cate, any idea?
- Bugscope Teamif you move southwest, you will find the wings
- Teacherwe are going to try another preset
- Bugscope Teamcool, this is a high magnification of a wasp. the fluffy balls are pollen.
- TeacherWhere si the pollen found
- Bugscope Teamand the hair like things are called "setae".
- TeacherIs this on the wasp wing
- Bugscope Teamtry reducing the magnification and we'll see the bug better, i think this is on the body of the wasp.
- Bugscope Teamwow, cool, huh? looks like it was the body.
- Bugscope Teamwing is to the lower left i think.
- 1:58 pm
- Bugscope Teamgreat job navigating, hill!
- TeacherWhy are the images in black and white
Bugscope Teamwe aren't using light to look at the insects, we are using electrons which are much smaller
Bugscope Teamyes, color is sensed by the frequency of light, whereas the electrons used to gather these images are much smaller than the frequency of light.
- Teachercool beans
- Bugscope Teamthe microscope is an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM)
- Teacherare these the seta
- Bugscope Teamyes the "hairs" are
- Bugscope Teamyep, the hair looking this are setae, setae are used to sense the environment around the bug, because bugs don't have nerves in their skin.
- Bugscope Teamthey don't have skin in fact, they have an ecto-skeleton.
- 2:03 pm
- Bugscope Teamright annie? annie is the expert!
- Bugscope Teamok clark, got ya back, gave you control, should be okay now.
- Bugscope Teamexoskeleton
- Bugscope Teamthe hairs are connected to nerves and stick through the exoskeleton
- Teachercan we see the ant head?
- Bugscope Teamits not a preset, but we can drive you over there
- 2:08 pm
- Bugscope Teamthere it is
- Bugscope Teamants have very simple eyes if any at all
- Bugscope Teamthat's because they don't rely on them because they live underground for most of the time
- Teacherwhat is in the mouth
- Bugscope Teamants have very busy looking mouths that usually looks like they are in the act of eating other insects
- 2:14 pm
- Bugscope Teamocelli
- Bugscope Teamocelli are often found on flying insects
- Bugscope Teamwasp head!
- Bugscope Teamyep
- Teacherwhat do we have here
- Bugscope Teamthis looks like the head of a wasp
- Teacherwhat are the three bumps on its head
Bugscope Teamthose bumps are "simple" eyes, also called ocelli. The function is not completely understood, but know that ocelli help the insect to nagivate in relation to the horizon and they also allow the insect to sense photoperiod
- 2:19 pm
- Bugscope Teamthere is a little baby wing
- Bugscope Teamsomething like that....
- Bugscope Teami haven't ever seen something like this before
- Bugscope TeamIt is pretty cool
- 2:24 pm
- Bugscope Teamwe can see the damselfly here
- Teacherwhy is this a damselfly not a dragonfly
- Teacher/where is its eye?
- 2:30 pm
- Bugscope Teami'm not sure about the ey, annie, but if you mag out we might be able to see the eye.
- Bugscope TeamWhat? It's a damselfyl?
- Bugscope Teami'm not sure about the damself vs. dragonfly i meant to say.
- Bugscope TeamI can't quite see the head to tell for sure. A damselfly has a long head, where as dragonflies have rounder heads. Usually a damselfly is smaller than a dragonfly.
- Bugscope TeamThe eyes were a little collapsed.
- Bugscope Teamah, north to the head!
- Bugscope Teamnow up and you can see the head
- Bugscope Teamd'oh
- Bugscope TeamDamselflies are usually smaller and more delicate that dragonflies, they hold their wings together over their backs, where dragonflies never fold their wings.
- Bugscope TeamThis is a damselfly
- Bugscope Teamgot it
- Bugscope Teamthat's why we have you
- Teacherlastly..what is your fav insect?
- Bugscope Teamscott!!!!
- Bugscope Teamno, just kidding. i like mites.
- Teachercreepy!
- Bugscope Teammine are longhorned beetles!
- Bugscope Teami don't know what mine is
- Bugscope Teamnot creepy at all
- Bugscope Teamstrepsiptera are really cool though...but not my favorite
- Teacherthank you for your time...we will do this again next year!
- Bugscope Teamgreat, we can't wait!
- Bugscope Teamok, good bye, great job, hope you had a good time!
- Bugscope Teamthank you for logging in!
- Bugscope TeamThank You!
- 2:35 pm
- Bugscope Teams
- Bugscope TeamOkay I am out the door. Thanks you guys.
- Bugscope Team;)
- Bugscope Teambye bye!!!
- Bugscope Teamokay, i'm closing the session now. bye you all!
