Project

Title A Bug's Eye View
Insects Various specimens that may be available
Description As an enrichment component to our larger inquiry based unit on microscopes, Bugscope will provide the students with an opportunity to engage in an authentic learning experience using a high powered microscope. In addition, because the students will be responsible for gathering specimens and preparing them for shipment, they will assume the role of a professional researcher who is contributing to a greater body of knowledge. Utilizing an authentic context will help the students to understand the real world application of microscopes. As a means to share our participation in this project, articles will be submitted to the local newspapers (Town News and Bergen Record), and the school newspaper. The Board of Education will also be briefed regarding the project. In addition, all the students will be provided with the URL of the site to share with their parents as part of an activity to be completed with their parents at home. Since there are 3 separate fifth grade science classes with 23 students in each—and a lab that houses only 15 computers, the optimal arrangement would be for three separate viewing times. Thank you in advance for your consideration of our application. We look forward to hearing from you!
