Title
Insects TBD
Description The "Scoop on Cool Careers" is an annual event sponsored by Congressman Inslee for girls and their parents to meet women "with cool careers" and participate in hands-on interactive displays to give them an idea of the widening opportunities for girls. In 2000 we had 17 "booths" that included women from Immmunex (spooling DNA), The Boeing Company, U. S. Department of Education, NASA, a local veterinarian, KOMO news reporter, Smart Girls, Nintendo, Fred Hutchinson, Washington State Patrol, Society of Women Engineers, Woodland Park Zoo, Real Networks, FBI, etc. This year we are expanding options to include careers in the arts that include the use of math, science and technology The girls were given a "passport" and had to visit at least 10 booths and participate in those activities to receive a certificate of participation. The invent includes an ice cream social and presentations by women about making good education decisions early. Bugscope would add an additional dimension to our program - the use of high tech tools for the study of local insects. We would have local teachers staffing the site. Not only would our student participants benefit but local teachers would be able to try out this new technology. We are very fortunate in being able to have this event at the Microsoft Conference Center, arguably the "high tech center" of the US! This is not a classroom project but is none the less an educational project. The goal is to bring girls and their parents together for a fun evening of exploring "dream" jobs available to women and what they need to do to get them - such as more math and science and IT training.
