• Bugscope TeamThe tiny 'hairs' are called setae. Some of them are anchored inside of the exoskeleton and connected to nerves, sending signals (touch, scent, hot/cold depending on what kind of seta it is) to the brain
• Bugscope TeamSome of the setae are protrusions from the exoskeleton, or cuticle, and do not connect inside the body; they're called microsetae or microtrichae and are responsible for coloration, sometimes, as well as (we think) creating a micro-atmosphere around the insect
• Bugscope TeamThe seta in the back of this view appear to be tenent setae, such as found on some of the tarsi. Tenent setae help the insect stick to things and (for example) climbing upside down, on the ceiling.

• Bugscope TeamTenent setae are usually found on the pulvillus, which is adjacent to the insect's claws, if it has them. The pulvillus is a pad that is covered with sticky tenent setae
