- GuestChat test #3.
- GuestOK, I'm heading downstairs to set up the microscope.
- 10:07 am
- Bugscope TeamBugs in scope. Pumping vacuum.
- Bugscope TeamFocused and running. Defining presets.
- 10:13 am
- 10:19 am
- 10:26 am
- Bugscope TeamOK Michele, ready when you are.
- 10:34 am
- Teacheroops...here I am - just needed more coffee ;)
- Bugscope TeamYay! I'm cruising on strong espresso myself from two hours ago.
- TeacherNICE!!!
- TeacherCloudy day here - makes me sleepy. OK - what sorts of new fun things can you tell me about Bugcope?
- Bugscope TeamFirst things first... right now you can NOT drive the scope, right? If you click on the fly's eye nothing happens?
- Teachercorrect
- Bugscope TeamNow you should be able to pan around.
- Bugscope TeamYep. Try clicking red + - buttons for e.g. magnification.
- Bugscope Teambrightness + :)
- TeacherDoes the scope auto focus?
- Bugscope TeamCate will join us in a moment here too.
- TeacherNice fly ;)
- GuestHi there!
- TeacherYay Cate!!!
- TeacherHI!!!!
- Bugscope TeamYes, but only from here right now. I'll do it: watch.
- Teacherk
- Guestbeen a while since we talked :)
- 10:39 am
- Bugscope TeamAF takes ten seconds.
- TeacherI read AF as something else for a sec....
- Teacher:)
- Bugscope TeamMichele, let's try some of the presets I made.
- Bugscope TeamBlue ball left arrow, click that. Then click on one of the thumbnails.
- Teacher?
- Bugscope Teamzoom zoom zoom, and we're ther.
- TeacherCool! What is that?
- Bugscope TeamDarned if I know. Spiky.
- TeacherI love the stats at the bottom of the image.
- Teacher:)
- Bugscope TeamTry walking up along that edge,
- Bugscope TeamScott wanted those stats at bottom to be tinier and less obtrusive, but I like 'em too.
- TeacherIs manual focus faster? And ok for other presets. Want me to choose them
Bugscope TeamManual focus is often faster when we're already pretty close.
- TeacherI am not sure of all that they mean, but could be a really great lesson on size and scale :)
- Bugscope TeamAnother brief test: Let me give Cate control...
Bugscope Teamand now you can't drive anymore, and your +- buttons vanished?
- Teachercorrecrt
- Teachercorrect
- Bugscope Teamand now they came back?
- TeacherI see control buttons again. Did Cate control and drive?
- Teacheryes :)
- Guesti didnt move
- 10:45 am
- Guestsorry
Bugscope Teamno prob, it was just to ensure that Michele could NOT drive then.
- Teacherwant to try to control? Want to maybe try this with students - having them control.
Bugscope Teamoh, you were asking Cate?
- Teacheryes - cate drives
- Bugscope TeamCate found the aztec salt!
- Teachersalt is cool
- Teacherdid not see elderberry
Bugscope TeamGood - cate and i can chat privately. glad that still works.
- Teacherprivate chats are good
- Guestit took an image as the stage was moving, or while the beam was temporarily blank
- TeacherI see - I don't remember that from past versions - that the thumbnails happened at a chat point. Or am I dreaming?
- TeacherMeaning, are the snapshots meant to specifically connect to a certain chat area and not when the scope is moving?
- Bugscope TeamThey were there, but I haven't figured out exactly when/why they get made.
- Guestit did it before, which was kind of nice to go along with chat so you could look back and see what was happening as the chat flowed along
- 10:50 am
- Bugscope TeamAt least I should prevent half-black and blurry ones from getting made.
- TeacherYes, if you can tweak the program to prevent the random images, that makes for a more clear conversation to review later ;) Just thinking of teachers and kids.
- TeacherI like that the thumbnails were next to the chat - we did always go back to them to review specific information with the questions, etc. But never had images of scope moving - just the image where we were chatting. Just a thought :) Could get a little confusing for some?
Bugscope TeamGood point.
Bugscope TeamWith this new/different scope, image capture works completely differently. Haven't figured it all out yet.
- Teachernice bug face :)
- Guestthis is the time to critique. thanks for being here with us today
- TeacherCamille - pardon my ignorance - are you the designer of the new Bugscope interface?
- TeacherThe images are lovely!!
Bugscope TeamAfter we've run a few full-class sessions I'd like to run them at much higher resolution. Even though they're slower that way.
- TeacherI think for kids and classrooms - speed is good - but not too much as to sacrifice resolution. So somewhere in between.
- Guesti think that's about right
- 10:55 am
- Bugscope TeamI'm snapping presets and adding them while Cate drives from the next room.
- Teacheroh...that is a nice image
- Guestok you can have it back
- Bugscope TeamMichele, control is back to you now.
- Teacherthanks! I will play :)
- Bugscope TeamCate, any idea of how to get fewer dark/bright bands like are happening right now?
Bugscope TeamDuh. Reduce dwell time. I had it at 5 usec, way too slow.
Bugscope TeamAlso instead of "average last 2 frames", menu scan->live. Otherwise changing bright/contrast causes those bands.
- TeacherI have a zillion ideas for lesson...but I will just drive the scope and play for now as needed.
- TeacherI love this place where the antennae attaches to the body. Cool structure and function lesson.
- Bugscope TeamSorry about that Michele, I drove around a bit too.
- Teacherno worries - you are in a fun place!!!
- Bugscope TeamScott just finished his lab tour for guests, he'll join us here in a sec.
- 11:00 am
- GuestHello Michele!
- Bugscope TeamWelcome Scottie
- TeacherExcellent - have not talked to Scot in a bit ! HI!!!!!
- Guesthaha
- GuestYay!
- TeacherMy friends - I missed you!
- Guestthis is the very first time we've been fully online since August 2015
- TeacherI feel like I was in outer space and suddenly regained contact with the Bug mothership.
- Guesthaha
- Teacherthat long????
- Guestyes that long
- Teacherdoh. too long
- Guestit took me a while to get funding, and then I made a bad hiring mistake, as it turned out
- TeacherI also remember more crisp images before - I am guessing that it the resolution bit you mentioned.
- Guesttesting
- Guestenter
- Guestanother test
- TeacherScot- understood - things happen. I have been here quietly waiting. Like a locust underground.
- Guesthaha like the insect metaphor, or simile, I guess
- Teacherwant me to try new preset?
- Guestwhat there are sound effects?
- Teacherka-boing
- Bugscope Teamka-boing. Bazinga. Phreeeeooooow.
- TeacherLOL
- Guesthaha I turned my speaker on, but nothing...
- Teacher:) oh my....missed these chats :)
- Teacherlove the sound effects, Camille
Bugscope TeamYou made Scott think I'd added a new multimedia feature to the website. :)
- Guestthis is going to be raw, first time, but I am pretty stoked
- TeacherI am super stoked
- 11:05 am
- Guesttenent setae\
- TeacherOh whoah...what is that goobly stuff?
- Teacheroh
- Guestpulvillus w tenent setae
- Teacheroh. pulvillus. Nice new word for teachers.
- Guestso I think we should have an indicator of what the preset is called
- TeacherHEY! I taught my students about setae this semester when we were looking at bees and they used the term wisely in conversation.
Bugscope TeamYou can tell from my preset names that I still haven't absorbed that vocabulary.
- Teacheryes- indicators are good.
- Teacheryou will learn, grasshopper :)
- Teacherbug humor
- GuestI'm going to run up to Stacy's office and see if I can pull this up.
- Teacherthat is a lovely image. Still wondering about resolution.
- 11:10 am
- Bugscope TeamFor interactive use like bugscope, it's simpler and faster to just zoom in to whatever detail you want.
- Teachergot it :)
- Bugscope Team(note to self: beam/live, dwell 5 usec is a good balance between film grain and latency and lack of dark horizontal bands.)
- TeacherWould be interesting to test other resolution boundaries and timing just to compare.
- Teachermaybe....
- Bugscope TeamYes, after all, screens are larger now than fifteen years ago!
- Bugscope TeamMaybe Scott got lost on the way to the fifth floor...
- Teacheryes, and I project this in a classroom onto a screen - students are also invited to pull it up on phones, laptops, iPads, etc.
- Bugscope TeamI've been testing with phones and tablets some, too.
- TeacherI mean it is a good lesson in science and instrumentation as well.
- Bugscope TeamHey, if you have a smartphone handy, try this session from there?
- TeacherMy iPad is at school. Will have to try that later.
Bugscope TeamOh well, it was worth a try. Sure will happen later.
- GuestJeff's office is closed; Stacy's office, outside of Jeff's, is closed
- 11:15 am
- TeacherI have a flip phone...bahahahaaa
- GuestBecause I didn't log on as an admin I cannot do a bunch of stuff, but the thing to do, I think, is go to a higher mag so you can discern focus
- TeacherI was trying to get this claw into focus more....should it not be a sharper image? I am not complaining :)
Bugscope TeamAbout as sharp as I can get it with my fancier controls. You're pretty good, it's just this sample is a bit old.
- TeacherI am old..this looks blurry to me :)
- Bugscope TeamMichele, yes, try that. Mag + a few times, then focus, then mag -.
- Teacherok
- Teacherhhmmmmm....
- Bugscope TeamMichele, Scot is driving "at the same time" as you. Could be wild.
- TeacherI will stop for now
- Bugscope Teamyeah it is frustrating; we'll figure it out
- Bugscope TeamNonono, keep driving and fighting :)
- 11:21 am
- Teacherha! You are talking to a martial artist - I love fighting :)
- TeacherOH - that is nice. What did you do?
- Bugscope TeamControl back to you, Michele. Scott drove it from the scope console.
- Bugscope Team(note to self: run "high tension" at not 2000 V like now but 5 kV.)
- TeacherThat is waht I was trying to get.
- Teacheroh....control!!!
- TeacherBut what about me? :)
- Bugscope Teamwhen we run a real session, we'll have the astigmatism corrected so you can go in and out of focus np
- Bugscope Teamsorry Michele, but this is so awesome; we'll have it all lined out when we get going, which will be soon...
- TeacherOK - thanks Scott (nods head with some confused looks)
Bugscope TeamWelcome to my world. He tries to teach me, but there's so much...!
- TeacherI am totally happy that you are getting this up and running and testing it. No worries. I love being part of the conversation.
- Bugscope Teamthe admin people, like Cate and me and Camille once we get him going, need to do some high-mag setup before the session that includes correcting the astigmatism
- Bugscope TeamMichele, let me try one more thing. In a moment I hope that your driving controls will vanish.
Bugscope TeamMichele, did that work?
- TeacherDid what work?
- Bugscope TeamYou can no longer drive?
- Bugscope Teamtoday we're working at only 2 kV; with a normal session we will work at 5 kV, for a smoother ride
- 11:26 am
- TeacherI was focused on making the tip of the claw sharp
- TeacherI can still drive
- Teacherstilll see controls
- Bugscope TeamInteresting. OK, thanks!
Bugscope Team(note to self: admin-session_setup.php who may drive "admins only" doesn't inhibit current non-admin user.)
- Bugscope Teamso to do that bring the mag up and then work on focusing, in or out -- you don't know until you start to see the results whether you need to focus up or down
- Teacheryes, getting better now
- Bugscope Teamwe can see a small chip near the tip of the claw
- Teachersort of like dissecting scope
- Bugscope Teamlooking bettah
- Teacherfun!
- Bugscope Teamso now you could go to a higher mag if you want
- Teachercan you get better focus?
Bugscope Teamso now you should be able to dial it in, still better
- Teacherthis fly needs a mani-pedi
Bugscope Teamhaha
- Bugscope Teammaybe bump the mag up again?
- 11:32 am
- Bugscope Teamwhen we have it set at an accelerating voltage of 5 kV the resolution will be better as well
- Teachertake me to a brochosome
- Teacherplease :)
- Teacherif you can
- Bugscope Teamnot sure that we have any on this sample, I'm sorry
- TeacherOH....I thought you saw one..... But some cool structures like that are fun to see.
- Bugscope TeamI think those are actually teeny teeny tiny, too small for the 2 kV that I mistakenly set the scope to. They're little wiffle balls. Right, Scott?
Bugscope Teamyes
- TeacherI have so many ideas for lessons this time....
Bugscope TeamYay!!!
- Teachergoing to try one more preset - then I have to go.
- Teachertoo bad I don't have time to drive to UI in a few weeks when I am in St. Louis :)
Bugscope TeamHalf a chance that the bridges would be flooded out anyways...!
- Teacherfloods....
- TeacherI love Camille's names for things. Spiky, Fluffy
- Bugscope TeamThis guy's legs used to be longer, I guess.
- TeacherOk folks I could spend another hour on this but I must leave. So sorry. If you want to schedule another test sometime give me a shout. Most mornings are good for me.
- 11:37 am
- TeacherEmail me soon! Gotta go!! Great to "see" you all again!
- Bugscope TeamOkay Michele. Thanks so much for the shakedown cruise.
