- Guestlike metroid
- Teacherthe bugscope team don' usually have maggots
- Studenthow does this relate to forensics
Bugscope Teammany insects help eat things when they die, and they do that at certain times, often, so you can tell how long something has been dead by which insects have gone after it
- Guestthanks mom
- Teacherbut if we actually had a bug, we could send it and they could put it on the scope

- Bugscope TeamI can log you out as you, and you can log back in as yourself.
- Bugscope Teamduh or Cate can
- 10:31 am
- 10:37 am
- Bugscope Teamhi Samantha!
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mosquito with its head turned to one side
- 10:43 am
- Bugscope Teamits eyes are a bit deflated
- Student.
- Bugscope Teambe sure to let us know if you have any questions
- Bugscope Teamhi Irii!
- Bugscope Teamor if you want to know more about something you see
- Bugscope Teamwe found that one of our mosquitoes had two mites on it
- StudentSo, why are it's eyes deflated? Is that a typical thing that happens after a bug dies?
Bugscope Teamyes they dry ot
Bugscope Teamoops dry out
- Bugscope Teaminsects have an exoskeleton, like a shell, or like armor, but some of the comp
- Bugscope Teammosquitos are a little softer than some other insects, so they will deflate more easily than a beetle, which has a harder exoskeleton usually
- Bugscope Teamsome components of the body are soft and dehydrate
- Studenthey homies
- Studenthey bro
- Studentwhats poppin
- Studentit looks crazy
- Studenthi guys !!!
- Studentah
- Studentsup ya
- Studentah
- StudentWhat are mites?
Bugscope Teamthey are tiny arthropods, some related to spiders, that live on insects and people etc.
- StudentWhat is this ?
Bugscope Teamit a mosquito's face
- Student.
- StudentAyo Yoooo!!!!
- Bugscope Teamhi all!
- Studentlette lette ow ow ow
- Studentmoo moo
- Studentlmaooo
- StudentOuchhhh
- Studentgio
- Studentight sssgetit
- Bugscope TeamAs you can see by the deflated eyes, this mosquito plays for the New England Patriots.
- Bugscope Teamyou can see that the compound eyes, made up of individual facets called ommatidia, are a bit dried out
- Bugscope Teamthe piece coming off to the right is the base of the proboscis
- Bugscope TeamThe eyes, when viewed at a very high magnification, are usually pretty interesting, as are the scales you can see on the head and proboscis.
- Bugscope Teamthis is a female; we can tell because it does not have ornate antennae
- Studentsoooooo....
- Studentexcuse me scot what is this ?
Bugscope Teamthis right now is the head of a mosquito
- 10:48 am
- Studentwhaaaa?
- StudentWhat is this ?
Bugscope Teamthis is the head of a mosquito on its side
- Studentok ?
- Studentok
- Studenthelp me
Bugscope TeamWhat's up, SAD DAD.
- Studenthelp me please
- Bugscope Teamthe mouth is towards the right in the middle. it has a long proboscis as its mouth
- Student.\
- Bugscope Teamits head is torqued to one side like you just said something to it that it totally didn't get
- StudentIs there a cause of death or-
- StudentDo all bugs have little hairs on them...? I just noticed that the mosquito had hairs on it and was curious.
Bugscope Teamyes! they're called setae
Bugscope Teamthey help the insect with sensing many things like heat, position, movement, etc
- Bugscope Teamit has little scales all over it
- Bugscope Teamlike when you say something to a
- Bugscope Teamdog
- Studentah ahh ahhhh
- StudentThis is dumb
Bugscope TeamThanks, Nicky.
- Bugscope Teamand the round bumps on the top and bottom are the ommatidia, or individual components, of the compound eyes
- Studentthis looks intteresting.
- StudentSo the setae are like sensors of sorts? Similar to how a cat's whiskers help them feel around spaces?
- TeacherMrs Prince here. Nickgg?
- Studentscott can i have control of the sem
Bugscope Teamyou have it!
- Bugscope TeamWho is in charge of exploring? You can click on a part of the image to move around, or jump to a preset, or use the +/- buttons at the top to zoom in or out, etc.
- Bugscope Teamthis is a palp, one of the sensory mouthparts of an insect
- StudentOh boy
- Bugscope TeamDeandra is now in charge.
- StudentWhat is that?
Bugscope TeamThis is a palp on a beetle. ARGH. Scot beat me to it. I'm on a slow connection here.
- TeacherSamantha, the hairs is why you often can't swat a fly with your hand - the hairs feel the breeze coming first and he moves
- Studentwhat is this ?
Bugscope Teamask Deandra to take the mag a bit lower and you can see where it is.
- Studentwhat is a beetle palp?
Bugscope TeamIt's kind of like a little arm near the mouth of an insect (a beetle in this case) that helps taste the food and then bring the food to the insects mouth
- Studenti want control
- Studentlol
- StudentAre insect mouth parts terribly complex? If this is only one part and it seems to complex, then the rest of an insect's mouth parts must be equally complicated...
- Studentis that dangerous
- StudentDEANDRA TAKE THE MICRO LOWER
- Studentwhere is the palp located?
Bugscope Teamnear the mouth
- Studentwhat is a palp ?
- Studentsem?
- Guesthi scott!
- Studentwhere do you find bettle palps?
- StudentDROP THE MAG
- Studentwhy does deandra even have control
- Studentwhat is a palp
- Studenthi Alex from laptop
- 10:53 am
- Studenti really dont even know what this is
Bugscope Teamwe are using a scanning electron microscope to look at insects up close
Bugscope Teamhave you see Bladerunner? They use an SEM in that movie.
Bugscope TeamImagine the head of a beetle, if you looked closely, there are things that look like little arms. this is an extreme closeup of one of those arms.
- Bugscope Teamthe one with a star has control. currently nickyg has it
- Studentscott how do i make the mag lower?
Bugscope Teamon the top of the window you should see a plus and minus for magnification, plus some other controls
Bugscope Teamyou may need to scroll down on the browser to see the controls
- Student:/
- StudentAlex from laptop ?
- Student;;
- Bugscope TeamDeandra try now -- it looks like I had not given you control as I thought, sorry.
- StudentAlex from laptop?
Bugscope Teamthat is one of our guys
- StudentWHO IS IRII
- Studenti
- Studentnot me
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Soooo how about that magnification
Bugscope Teamhaha we're working on it
- Teacherwhen a body dies, bugs eat it
- Studentoh
- Bugscope Teamsweet!]
- Studentcute
- Bugscope Teamgood job driving!
- Studentwhen the body dies, bugs eat it
Bugscope Teamand bacteria and fungus, etc.
- Studentbugs can carry "A disease"
- Teacherwhat are those geometric shaped things?
Bugscope Teamthose are the ommatidia -- the individual eye facets
- Studentgross
- Studentwhat is on the bug's head?
Bugscope Teamthe little leaflets are scales, right now, you're looking at a mosquito head from the side. The eye is that backwards c shape and the mouth parts are going towards the bottom left
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Studentnot all bugs
- Studentants head
- 10:58 am
- Student...........................................
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Studentdisgusting
- Studentwoahh
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°
- Studentthanks joe!
- Student( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Student can i get control ?
- Studenti want control
- Studentcan i have controle
- StudentRELLO44 WANTS CONTROL
- Studentcan i get control scottie?
- StudentAnt dandruff
- Studentcan i have control
- Studentim freeeeeeeeeee
- StudentSwing the control this way
- StudentDon't bugs get diseases too? I used to have an ant farm and I heard that could happen.
Bugscope Teamyes! they do
Bugscope TeamAbsolutely. Fungi, bacteria, viruses.
Bugscope TeamInsects can also pass disease. Malaria is a good example in people. Many plant viruses are spread by aphids.
Bugscope TeamWe use some of these fungi and viruses to kill insects that attack crops
Bugscope TeamIf you've ever hear of "BT corn", it makes use of a toxin produced by a bacteria to kill insects. The toxic was originally from a bacteria (which is where the "BT" comes from), that would cause the insect's esophagus to swell shut, starving it. Like an allergic reaction.
- StudentCAN I HAVE CONTROL
- Studentlemme get that
- StudentPLEASE
- Studentwhat is it
- StudentPLEASE
- StudentHey Scott can I have control please?
Bugscope TeamTSmack you have control now.
- Studenti dont want control
- StudentThanks T and DW for the info~!
- Bugscope TeamOr, not. :)
- Bugscope TeamMRS. PRINCE 2 will let us know who should have control.
Bugscope Teamoops sorry Daniel-san.
- Bugscope Teamhee hee
- Teachercas can have it
- Bugscope TeamThis is an ant. ants tend to have smaller eyes with less facets (ommatidia) than some other insects since they rely on their vision much less, and spend quite a bit of time in dark tunnels where vision isn't the most useful.
- StudentWhat is that
- Studentwat is this
- Studentewwwwwwwww that is gross looking
- StudentWhat is a haltere?
- StudentWhat is this?
Bugscope TeamIt is called a haltere. It is used to help stabilize flies in flight.
- Bugscope Teamthis is a haltere
Bugscope Teamit works as a sort of gyroscope to help flies fly
- Student???
- Studentgross bro
- StudentThis doesnt look like a ant
Bugscope Teamsorry i'm on a bit of lag, the ant was before this
- Studentewww
- Bugscope Teamhalteres are hindwings that have been modified to beat with a frequency opposite that of the wings in flies.
- Studentbruh >_>
- StudentThat looks like a deflated balloon...
- Studentwhy
- Studentis that an eye?
Bugscope Teamno this is the haltere, i am on a bit of a lag and it was for the thing before this
- Bugscope TeamMosquitoes have these as well because they are also Dipterans
- StudentWhat is your job like?
- Studentdo you guys get paid for this ?
- Studentwhat do you do for a living ?
- 11:03 am
- StudentTHAT LOOKS NASTY
- Studentwhat is that
Bugscope Teamthis is a haltere on a fly. or was. it beats opposite the wings to provide balance
- Studentdo you guys get paid for this
- Studentthe picture changed
- Studentway do u do in life
- Studentis this an occupation ?
- StudentNeat. Kind of looks like a crab sort of creature....... Though, what is it?
- Studentso a wing?
- Bugscope TeamDiptera is the group that all flies are put in - the haltere is a defining characteristic of Diptera
- Studentdo you guys enjoy doing this ?
Bugscope Teamyes we do! It's fun getting to play with a $600,000 SEM, and also to show it off, in a way
- StudentWhat is that symbol next to the 500?
Bugscope Teama Greek 'mu,' meaning 'micro,' so mu m means a micrometer or a micron.
Bugscope TeamIt represents 1/1,000,000th of a meter. As a centimeter is 1/100th of a meter, and a millimiter is 1/1,000th of a meter, a micron is 1/1,000,000th of a meter.
- Studentwhy do this pic eye look like egg
- Studentthat's goat
- Bugscope TeamThose structures that look like little arms are actually the beetle's antennae
- Studentwhat are those things coming down their face?
Bugscope Teamthe big things we see that look like submarine sandwiches are lamellated antennae
- Studentis this a job ?
- Studenthow much shmoney do you make ?
- Student$600,000?
- Studentheyyy
- Studentwhen can i start?
- Studentyayy
- Studentwat is dat
- StudentHopefully not with too many people in different languages! That would be confusing... but interesting..
- Teacherthese guys have chatted with hundreds of groups all over the world
Bugscope Teamwe've been doing this almost 17 years
- Studentthat is alot of bred
- StudentWOWWWWW thats a long time
- Bugscope Teamthis is awesome
- TeacherCass can have control next
Bugscope TeamCass is the supreme ruler now
Bugscope TeamDang, this connection is too slow. Usually I beat you to it by 30 seconds or so. :)
- Studenta creature

- Bugscope Teamthe first time we have seen mites from a mosquito
- Studentanswer my question plese
Bugscope TeamWe volunteer our time, but working with the microscope is part of Scot's full-time job as manager of the facility.
- Studentit lokks infected
- Studentlooks*
- Bugscope Teamthe mite is also softbodied, like spiders are, so it is shriveled\
- Studentomg what is that
Bugscope Teamit is a mite that had presumably been feeding on the mosquito
- Bugscope Teamit's a little mite
- StudentWorking with those microscopes and looking at insects/bugs would be awesome. I can't stand a few insects out there but I'd love to examine...
- Studentso what is your job ?
Bugscope Teamwe train people to run microscopes to do their research, here at the University of Illinois
Bugscope TeamI'm an Entomologist - so I study insects :) however, I also study ticks which are not insects
- Studentwe in jersey !
- 11:08 am
- Bugscope Teamthey can be found on other insects. bugs on other bugs
- Studentcan i have cintrol
- Studenti want to work with you guys
Bugscope TeamI know the university has summer internship opportunities for high school students. Maybe you can sometime!
- Studentit is polen !!!!!!!!!!
- StudentJESUS CHRIST WHAT IS THAT
Bugscope Teamyou can see that it is about 300 microns long, about 0.3 mm.
- Studentwhat is this
- Studenteggs
- Studentchicago?
Bugscope Teamabout 3hrs south of Chicago
- StudentEggs?
Bugscope Teamthose are pollen grains, lily pollen grains
- StudentEGGS?
Bugscope Teampollen
- StudentOhh thanks
- StudentDo you guys have a IG
Bugscope Teamnot sure what you mean
- StudentWith everyone here it's like a constant flow of ADD and a game of "Guess the Picture"...
Bugscope Teamlike herding cats
Bugscope Teamhaha
- Studentis that a fly ?
Bugscope Teamnope it is a beetle
- Studentis that a fly?
Bugscope Teamthis is a cucumber beetle
- StudentWHOA thats rad
- Studentbeetle
- Studentbeetle
- Studentwhere are they found
Bugscope Teamthese are found in association with plants, all over
- Bugscope TeamThis is a cucumber beetle, the eye is on the right side (the bumpy surface sphere), and its mouth parts are pointing directly up near the centere
- Teacherthey are found in vine crops
Bugscope TeamThank you, Mrs Prince!
- Bugscope Teamhere we can see another kind of pollen
- Teachercrops like cucumbers, grapes, squash
Bugscope Teamalso corn
- Bugscope Teamwe are looking at the mandibles of an ant here
- StudentWhy is it called cucumber beetle?
Bugscope TeamThey like to eat cucurbits (squash, cucumbers, pumpkins). The larvae are a real pest because they attack the roots of corn, causing the corn to fall over (lodge). They also pass lots of bacterial diseases around. They are a HUGE economic problem.
Bugscope TeamTo make that a bit clearer, the larvae can feed off the roots of corn. The adults like to chew the flowers, leaves, and skin of fruit on various types of squash plants.
- Studentfire burn toast
- StudentIt looks like an abstract art picture...... Mandibles look like this up close? Neat!
- Studentno
- Studentwho is rg
- 11:13 am
- Studentcan you turn it to pollen cassyah omg
- Studentwho is sad dad LOL
- Studentcan sad dad have the power
- Teachernext controller - B-singh please
Bugscope TeamB-Singh is now the ultra commander
- StudentB_SINGH
Bugscope Teamoops sorry
- StudentThanks Guys
- Teacheri wonder what chem companies have done to pesticide these guys
Bugscope TeamYou mean the cucumber beetles? Every single one of them. In fact, that BT corn was developed to kill the larvae.
- Studentsupreme ruler >>>
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope Teamthis is cool
- Studentalright cut it out
- Studentcan i have control now
- Teacherproduct called X-clude is used, but it looks like that cucumber bugger is a tough one to get rid of
- StudentDo insects that get examined often have their "last meal" caught in their mandibles? If so, seems none of them bothered to brush or visit their dentists.
Bugscope Teammaybe not so much the last meal caught in their mandibles as much as, last meal regurgitated.
- Studentthis is so fun i am enjoying myself i am grateful for this opportunity to be in this live chat :)
- StudentEeewwww cooooooolll!! Thanks for the info, Joe.
- Studentstep poppin
- Studentwow thankyou m8!
- Studentis it true that the government puts insects like this into some of our foods ?
Bugscope TeamNo.
Bugscope TeamInsects are used for food coloring and other things, but the government does not place insects into our foods.
Bugscope Teamprobably not -- they are not centralized like that, and there would be no reason.
Bugscope Teamit's not so much that the government puts insects in our food as it is insects putting themselves in our food
Bugscope TeamThe government does allow a certain amount of insect parts to be in food, but as the government isn't in the food manufacturing business, the government does not intentionally put insects in there.
Bugscope Teamit's just an unavoidable part of food, dependent on the food, insect parts are allowed to be in it (60 fragments per 100 grams or so, depending)
- Studentwat is dat
- Studenthow many years of college of this did you guys gave to take for this job?
- StudentSome of these insects look like they're dramatically posing for their close ups..... hehhe
- Studenthave*
- Studentewww
- Teacher Bacillus thuringiensis BT is chromosomally altered crops
Bugscope TeamYes, genetically modified organism. The gene for producing the protein that causes the reaction is in corn used for cattle feed.
Bugscope Teamthey have had problems with weeds evolving in response to the alterations, so it's a kind of arms race with nature
- 11:19 am
- StudentWhat is that
- Studentword ya not gonna answer my question
Bugscope TeamAre you asking about the trapjaw ants?
Bugscope Teamwhich question?
- Bugscope TeamSad Dad how are you doing now? You can tell your kids about this...
- StudentCan you answer mine?
- Studentyea the trapjaw
- StudentDoes that stinger just puncture, or does it have poison in it?
Bugscope TeamIt punctures and has venom in it
- Studentthanksᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
- Studentdoes this have poison
- StudentIt's facinating how insects have such complicated parts while humans don't. Is it likely that it's a evolutionary responce due to their small size?
- Studentthe trapjaw
- Studentwhere are they found?
Bugscope Teamwhat were you referring to?
Bugscope TeamTrapjaw ants are found in a lot of places, in the US they're mostly restricted to the South i think.
- Studentthere*
- Studentwhaaaatttttttt
- Studentyoooo lmao
- Studentwhat was it
- Studentoh thanks joe
- Studentis thier enough to venom to slump a human?
Bugscope Teamit just hurts like a wasp sting
Bugscope TeamIf that person has an allergic reaction, then yes. Some allergic responses to stings and bites can be quite serious.
- Studentso..does the insect have the same reaction as the wasp?
- StudentWhat does the venom do?
Bugscope Teamit's main purpose is to cause pain to what ever it is attacking (the amount of pain it can cause varies from an species to ant species)
Bugscope TeamAnts will only really attack something though if it is disturbing the nest or threatening the ant itself
- Studenti will tell my kids scotj this is so beautiful
Bugscope Teamwe can look at all kinds of things with the SEM, and we can also collect x-rays from the samples that let us know what elements they are made of.
Bugscope Teamwith SEM we can image 3-dimensional objects at high resolution. with TEM we can image objects that are so thin and or small that they are almost 2D.
- Studentcool
- Studentwat evaporation does this do
- Studentᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
- Studenthuman
- Studentᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
- Studentᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
- StudentWhat is a proboscis
Bugscope Teamit's a tube that insects use to drink food.
- Teacherwhat is a haltere again?
Bugscope Teamhalteres are modified hindwings found in Diptera that beat opposite the beat of the two wings and have a kind of gyroscopic, stabilizing effect on flight
- Studentisnt a proboscis like a nose?
- StudentSo it can basically cause slight paralysis
Bugscope TeamMore of it releases digestive enzymes into what it's attacking - not really paralysis. Wasps usually do that
- Studentwhat is a probiotic ? (off topic )
- Teacheris this one SEM with multiple stages? or
Bugscope TeamJust one stage here. We've modified the size of it to handle larger specimens.
- Studentwhat kind of food do they eat?
- Studentcan it hurt somebodfy syestem nd brain
- Teacherwhat is the range of mag for your SEM
Bugscope Teamwe can take the mag to over 200,000x but there are few samples that look good, like good enough for publication, at that range..
- 11:24 am
- Studentmoooooiee
- StudentWhat is the range of mag for your sem
Bugscope Teamwe can go from about 17x to over a million, but 200,000x is about the best we can do for publishable images
- Studentwhy do ants carry the leftover pollen?
- Studenttufff
- Studentis it on purpose?
- Studentnice question sam ah
- Teacherisn't a proboscis like a nose?
Bugscope Teamit is more like the mouth i would say.
Bugscope TeamThe insect antennae are more of the insects nose
Bugscope Teamin terms of smelling, for breathing, insects have breathing holes on the sides of their bodies called spiracles
Bugscope Team*antennae, in terms of smelling are more the nose
- Studentcentipe or naw
- StudentWHAT!!!!!!
- Studentsad dad is stealing questions
- Studentwhat kind of food do they eat?
Bugscope TeamIt depends upon the insect in question. Are you referring to ants or another one in particular?
Bugscope TeamInsects will eat everything: meat, plants, fungi.
- Studentwhat is a haltere again?
Bugscope TeamHalteres are the reduced 2nd wing pair found only in Dipteran (flies, mosquitoes) which help with stabilizing flight - this is why it's so easy for house flies to flip themselves upsidedown to hang on the ceiling
- Studenthow do we let these suck our blood?
Bugscope Teamwhen mosquitoes suck your blood they may have an anesthetic that prevents you from feeling what is happening
- StudentIs the fur on the fly claw sharp?
Bugscope Teamnot to us, but this fly does seem to have a lot of stiff, bristle-like setae that may protect it from being eaten, for example
- Studentwhy???
Bugscope Teamwas this the question about leftover pollen?
- StudentThat's very interesting thank you SCOTJ
- Studentyes
- Studentwhy do they got spike
- 11:29 am
- StudentWhy do they have so many spikes and stuff"
Bugscope Teamsome of the spikes are for self-sensing, called proprioception; some are for sensing touch, or wind, or hot/cold, or smells
- Teacherfinal 10 min guys - we will start thanking them at 12:32
- Teacheri read somewhere that only female mosquitos bite us
Bugscope Teamthat is true
Bugscope Teamthe females need the blood to produce eggs and provide them with nutrition to grow
- StudentNectar, I hear, IRII
- StudentThank you everyone. I had a great learning experience from this. Thank you guys once again
- StudentThanks ・ᴗ・
- Teacherguys - don't forget to write down your nickname on your papers and your comments

- Bugscope Teamhi amanda
- Bugscope TeamHi Amanda!
- 11:47 am
- TeacherAmanda - do you want to ask the bugmeisters a questions
- Studentyes
- Bugscope Teamthis is the head of a moquito
- Studentwhat do i ask tho ?
Bugscope Teamhey you can ask what this is, or why is it not in color, or who is DW?
Bugscope TeamAnything you want!
- Bugscope Teamor what are the round things
- Bugscope TeamThis is a mosquito's head from its left side, the bumpy surface area is the eye, the donut shaped thing infront of it is the base of an atenna that has broken off, and the leaflets you see all over are scales, the mouth parts are pointing down and to the left.
- Studentwhy is this pic not in color ?
Bugscope Teamwe are using electrons rather than light; electrons are much smaller than the wavelengths of visible light, so what we see is signal, in grayscale, from the secondary electrons that come back from the specimens
- Studentohhh cool
- Bugscope Teamif you ever see scanning electron microscopy images, or transmission electron microscopy images, in color, it is false color
- Bugscope Teamthis scanning electron microscope allows us to see specimens with 2-nanometer resolution
- Studentlitty
- Bugscope Teamhello Everyone!

- Teacherback to my stage question from last period... so you have multiple specimens on a stage in the vacuum?
Bugscope TeamYes. If you want, Scot can turn the camera on so you can see them.
Bugscope Teamyes we do. they are all sitting on a carbon-tape covered aluminum stub
Bugscope TeamCate generally packs out the stage with a bunch of things. We prefer smaller insects over the big ones so there are more things to see.
- Studentha
- Studentwhats the athmattics
- Studentwhy is it getting dark
Bugscope Teamit's going through a goth stage
Bugscope Teamsomeone is tinkering with the brightness and contrast
- StudentWhat's a goth stage

- Studentwhere is pollen found
- Studentsrry big wrd
- Studentwhy is this image moving?
Bugscope TeamProbably because Shay is clicking on the picture. Where you click is what will be in the center of the next picture.
- Studentwhere are you guys located?
Bugscope Teamcentral illinois, urbana-champaign
- Studentwhat do they eat
- Studentwhat is a weevil head
- Studentwhere do they sleep
- Student»DWThey like to eat cucurbits (squash, cucumbers, pumpkins). The larvae are a real pest because they attack the roots of corn, causing the corn to fall over (lodge). They also pass lots of bacterial diseases around. They are a HUGE economic problem
- Studentaround a tree or something
- Studentwhere are they found?
Bugscope Teamscarab beetles are found worldwide
Bugscope Teamsome of the more famous examples would be from egypt, used by ancient egyptians as jewelry
- Studentwhat are we looking at
- Bugscope TeamThere's what the stage looks like.
- Studentis that a microwave??
- Teachergive control to amanda - she impressed me with her comment
- Studentwhat is this?
- Studentthats was up
- Bugscope TeamYou can see all the bugs on their backs.
- 12:02 pm
- Studentheyyy
- Teacheryou are looking at a stage in a vacuum sealed SEM (electron microscope)
- Studentprobably because they are little and can like mess with the evidence at a crime scene
- Studentpass the host u laggin
- Teacherit is 3 - 4 ft tall (see photos on busscope website some other time)
- Studentis it rlly?
- Bugscope TeamAmanda has control now.
- Studentcan this bug hold DNA?
Bugscope TeamAll living things we are aware of have DNA.
Bugscope TeamAnd probably a lot of things we are unaware of.
Bugscope TeamDNA controls every aspect of how every living organism develops. The environment influences how all living things develop, but it is DNA that defines what is possible.
- Studentwhats the different between cucumber beetle head then a regular
- Studenthow tall are they? 6 foot 2?
Bugscope Teamwho?
- Studentwhat does bug has to do with forensic ??
Bugscope Teaminsects can be used in forensics, because depending on the location, time of year, etc..., the way a body is broken down is very specific. so you can get a good estimate on time of death and other info.
- Studentsome type of MITE
- Studentwhy are these bugs so dag on big?
Bugscope TeamOh, these are the small ones. You should see the giants that turn up in fossils sometimes. :)
- Teacherin reality the image is less than a hair thickness
- GuestHi Kenny!!!!!!!
- Studentits scales
- Studentwhat are those things that look like leaves?
Bugscope TeamThose are scales. They're like little tiny feathers.
- Studentmosquitos have hair on their legs?
- Studentcan i get control now ?
- Studentits legs and antenni
- Studentshut up ray aint nobody have time for your questions
- Studentoooo cool
- StudentI love you all
- StudentWhat are scales used for in a mosquito?
- Studentto sense
- StudentHow big are the bugs in real life?
Bugscope TeamEverything you're looking at today is less that 1cm in length, I believe. Cate would know.
- Studentwhat are the 3 prong looking things on its face
Bugscope Teamthe three prongs pointing towards the bottom left are its mouth parts, the longest one being hte proboscis, or the part that bites you
- Studentwhat does the guys do
- Studentare all of those shapes together its eyes
Bugscope Teamyes, those small panels are what make up the insect's eye - each panel is called an ommatidium
- Studentso the hair on them are like the antennae on ants?
- Teacheronly the females bite us, the guys dont bite
Bugscope Teamthat's right. the males will either not eat at all as adults or they will drink nectar
- Teacherhuman males could never -not eat
- Studentyes bugs do bite
- Studentwhy don't male bugs bite?
Bugscope TeamMale mosquitos don't bite because they don't need the proteins found in blood. The males feed off flower nectar.
- StudentHow do male mosquitos get their nutrients?
- StudentWhat are the long hairs near the scales used for?
- Bugscope Teamwe try not to put the really big insects in here, like cicadas. if students really want to see cicadas, then i will cut up the insect, because it takes up the whole stage area
- Studentwhy is it b+w
- Studentdo the females eat the males like spiders
- Studentthey could hold a lot of blood
- StudentWhy do the females bite? to reproduce?
Bugscope TeamYes. They need some of the proteins in order to produce eggs.
- Studentthey use the blood for food
- Studentso the females can lay eggs on you
- Studentcan it feel things ?
- StudentSo why don't female bugs eat flower nectar as well?
- Studentdo they bite other animals too? like dogs and cats?
Bugscope TeamYes. Most anything with blood.
- StudentDo they only like human blood?
- Studentthey reproduce to have babys
- Teacheri remember scot you said that groups can send you bugs to prep
- GuestWhat happens to our blood when a mosquito bite us
- Studentits legs
- Studenthow much nectar can they drink?
- Studentsweet blood
- Bugscope Teamthe females need the bloodmeal to lay eggs
- Studentmosquitoes drink nectar?
Bugscope Teamyup, males drink only nectar, females a combination of nectar and blood.
- Studentwho eats these things
- 12:07 pm
- Studentyes
- Studentwhy is the bug so dry lookin?
Bugscope TeamThey've been dead for quite some time. The inside of the microscope is in a vacuum. If they weren't dried down, then the bugs would pop like popcorn when the vacuum gets going. (All the water inside would cause them to explode.)
- Studentmales drink only nectar, females a combination of nectar and blood.
- Studentperfectly
- Guestwhos is cole_world
- Studentlol
- Studentlol
- Studentwhy males dont bite ?
- Studentwhen the blood enters the mosquito does is it oxygenated or not (red or purple)
- Studentoooo thats violent
- Studentyeet
- Studentyeet they are
- Guestwhy is it in black and white
Bugscope Team"we are using electrons rather than light; electrons are much smaller than the wavelengths of visible light, so what we see is signal, in grayscale, from the secondary electrons that come back from the specimens" - Scotj
- Studentwhos shay ?
- Teacheri hereby hand over control to godcila for the cintilating comment about reproduction
Bugscope Teamgodcila has control
- Studentits obvious its old
- Studentboy you better give me the control after
- Studentare they attracted to certain blood types
Bugscope TeamI don't believe they are, but perhaps T or Joe can answer that better. I do know that certain body chemistries seem to attract mosquitoes more than others. That's from personal experience/observation, and unlikely, in that situation, to be due to cosmetics, etc.
- Studentlol
- Studentwhen the blood enters the mosquito does is it oxygenated or not (red or purple)
- Studenty'all funy
- Guestcause ur usernmae is risctricted. bigbootylover
- Studentare there purple mosquitos?
- Studentwhat is the bug doing
- Studentgoodness.....
- Studenty cant i get a reply back to my questions
Bugscope TeamYou asking about the male mosquitos? If so, they exist to fertilize the eggs of the females. Otherwise, they're lazy - don't help out around the house, etc. ;)
- Studentdo yall get paid for this...Tf
Bugscope TeamScott gets paid because he is the All-Knowing-Microscope-Guru; however most of us (including Scott) volunteer our time for BugScope because we enjoy the work and love to be apart of educating people about insects :)
- Studentwhat do the guys do
Bugscope Teamthe male mosquitoes drink nectar for energy and to survive for the week or so that they are alive as adults and try to find females to mate with
- Studentshut up Amar

- StudentWhere do weevils live?
- Studentwhen the mosquito sucks your blood is the blood oxygenated or nope
- TeacherSEM is a type of electron microscope
- Studentmalaria?
- Studentthis is c00l
- Teacherthe specimens are put in a vacuum - no air
- Studentasks if weevils are sharp? alrdy answered?
- Studentlover2
- Studentwhy no air ?
- StudentMosquito nets have found a whole slew of alternative uses from fences that keep livestock contained, rope, soccer nets, and even soccer balls.
- Teacherand electrons are bombarding the specimen sending back images, kinda like radar
- StudentSo if the females drink blood and nectar what do they feed the baby females? Blood and nectar?
Bugscope TeamThis is actually a good question. The females lay eggs in water, then abandon them. The eggs hatch to produce small larvae that eat microscopic organisms in the water until they're ready to molt into adults.
Bugscope TeamThe larvae don't need much water to live in, so if you have a blocked gutter on your house, or a bucket that has a bit of rainwater in it, that's enough to get mosquito larva in it. They can usually find enough debris and stuff in that small amount of water to grow to be adults. Always empty buckets and anything that collects rainwater as soon as possible to stop skeeters.
- Studentthis tuff
- Studentelectrons?
- Studentyo
- Studentso what is it
- Teacheronce i opened a bag of flour and saw bugs, they must have been weevils - yuck
- StudentWhat's a weevil ?
Bugscope TeamWeevils are small insects that are commonly found attacking grain products, such as flour.
Bugscope Teambut they can be quite large in Spain there is a Palm Weevil that is about 1.5inches long!
Bugscope TeamWellllll... guess I'm not sleeping tonight. Thanks, T!
- Studentnot a Weavile ofcourse
- Studentare those the arms?
- Guestwho's in control?
- Studentok so whats a true big head
- Studenti got roaches at home can i send em to u
- StudentFemales are typically the only mosquitoes that feed on blood, and they do it because they need the protein to help develop their eggs. Without it, the eggs don't mature to the point that the female mosquito can lay them for hatching.
- Studentcould those bugs in the flour couldve been stink bugs
- Studentwhat about in new jersey ?
- StudentIv
- StudentDoes this stinger have poision?

- Studentneph where u at
- StudentWhy does its eye look deflated?
- Studentwhat is this?
- StudentHow does the structure of a fly's eye help with it's function?
- Studentwhy does its eye look deflated?
Bugscope TeamIt is normally filled with fluid. But when we dried it down to put in the vacuum, it deflated.
- Studentyes we doin arachnids next >:P
- Studentew mesh
- TeacherScot - in general do you have arachnids - one of the kids asked me

- Studentis that like an eye socket?
- Studentdo flies see through every little hole in their eyes?
Bugscope TeamIt's hard to know exactly how a fly "sees" (that is, interprets its surroundings) but yes, that whole structure gives the fly vision.
- StudentCHANGE THE PICTURE
- Studentdo they have more sense then normal flyies do
- Studentis there any dirt there?

Bugscope Teamthey might like the rotting food. or they are garbage eaters and will eat pretty much anything. wasps can be the same way, which is why you might see more of them around garbage areas

Bugscope TeamWe do not. I don't believe there are any in our supply of specimens, and they aren't commonly found in our area.
- Studentwhen a mosquito drinks blood is the blood oxygenated or not
Bugscope Teamit may or may not be. because the blood comes from veins, closer to the surface, it may be less oxygenated

- StudentWhy does the Queen Ant have a bigger lower body than the other ants? if that makes sense
Bugscope TeamJoe can confirm this, but I'm pretty sure it is because the queen ant (and bee/wasp/etc.) is an egg-laying machine.
Bugscope Teamyes she has a huge abdomen so that she can lay the thousands of eggs that may be found within
Bugscope Teamyup. the queen has an abdomen that can stretch out quite a bit to accommodate all the eggs she will produce

- Studenthow long are beetles antennas?
- Studentcan flies drink tea?
Bugscope TeamThey can, but it would be unlikely that they'd do so unless it was that southern, sweat tea. They'll go after the sugar, but plain tea has little to attract them aside from the water.
