Project

Title Insects: Up Close and Personal
Description I am a technology teacher at an elementary school and I usually integrate science into my lessons. The first graders study insects in the spring and Bugscope will be a culminating activity after students have studied insects in their classroom. I read about the Bugscope project last spring in my graduate course and we tried it in 2013. It was a great success and deepened students’ understanding of insects. After we participated in the Bugscope project, the children did reflections about what they had learned. We then combined the project into a digital movie. We will do the same again this year. I posted a link to the live session transcript on my website and also included their reflections. Many children shared these artifacts at home with their families. In addition to identifying the body parts of an insect and the stages of development, the first-grade students will also study the following topics: identify how insects have adapted for survival, describe how insects are beneficial, understand that an entomologist is scientist who studies insects.

Miscellaneous

Where did you hear
about Bugscope?
I came across this resource during a graduate course. I was reading about apprenticeship programs, community of learners and exposing students to experts. I've used it for the last two years. This year, I am planning on using it with all 4 of my first-grade classes.
