- Bugscope TeamSetting up the presets. We have a good collection, but we're looking for a few more.
- Bugscope TeamLet us know if you are anxious to get started.
- Bugscope TeamThese are all samples the school sent
- TeacherHi! We are finishing our prep and will be ready shortly. :-)
- 7:59 am
- Bugscope TeamScott is going to go to find a preset for the ants. Then we'll be ready.
- Bugscope TeamHey, Taylor, Eliot, Mati, et al. Welcome to bugscope.
- Bugscope TeamWe are ready to roll.
- Studentthis is cool
- TeacherWe are ready, too!
- Bugscope TeamMrs. Valenty, you have control of the scope.
- TeacherCan Will please drive first?
- Studenthello people
- Bugscope TeamHello, JP.
- Bugscope TeamWill has control of the scope. Go for it will.
- Bugscope TeamWill. Sorry.
- Bugscope Teamsee the stemmata?
- Bugscope TeamWill, you have clearance to drive.
- 8:04 am
- Bugscope Teamthat's what the tiny eyes are called
- StudentHello
- StudentHello everybody. This caterpillar is cool.
Bugscope Teamit's like an enormous-headed baby
- Bugscope TeamClick on the image to move around, or select a preset from the list on the left (use the blue arrow button to expand the list) or use the +/- buttons to change the mag, etc.
- Studentthis is a caterpillar?
Bugscope TeamYes! not sure what species or family
- StudentThe mandibles are strange to look at up close
- Bugscope Teamwhen we get back to low mag we can see that it has six official legs and a number of unofficial ones as well, the prolegs
Bugscope Teammost caterpillars have 10 prolegs
- Studentthe thing is so creepy
- Studentwhat are the bumps in the picture?
Bugscope Teamthose are little craters in the doublestick tape we use to help hold the insects down
Bugscope Teamwe also see a kind of hood or shadow of silver paint
- Studentwhat is this bug?
Bugscope TeamThis isa cute little true bug. They have a proboscis to drink liquid meals
- TeacherKids, notice the long proboscis of the true bug.
- Studentoh yeah
- Bugscope TeamThey can stick that into plants or other insects, depending on what they prefer
- StudentIs the proboscus of this bug long compared to most?
Bugscope Teamit's pretty long; it all depends, of course. those of some moths can be quite long, like in the inches
- Studentis that a true bug?
Bugscope Teamhaha Yeah!
- Bugscope Teamsee its compound eyes?
- Studentya
- Student???????
- Studentwhat are the holes by the proboscis?
Bugscope Teamthat is where the palps should be -- accessory mouthparts
- StudentThe antennae look like they are eyes coming off of the compound eyes
Bugscope Teamyeah they do!
- Studentdo u guys know eachother
Bugscope Teamyou mean those of us in green? yes
- Studentthe face looks kind of scary
Bugscope TeamTheyre cuter when theyre alive...
Bugscope TeamAs far as I am aware, very few North American caterpillars are dangerous to us. The saddleback and Io are two you might find in your area that are. The rest are largely harmless and quite cute.
Bugscope TeamThere are a few other species that are toxic if you eat them. So try to avoid the temptation to put a caterpillar in your mouth the next time you come across one ;) other caterpillars, for example some species of tiger moths, have hairs that can irritate the skin if you are sensitive to them. Theres a species of tussock moth caterpillar thats yellow which always gives me a rash if I handle it
Bugscope TeamYes, I forgot about the tussock moths.
Bugscope TeamAs an aside, for those of you tempted to actually chew on a caterpillar, you shouldn't lick toads either.
- 8:09 am
- Studentthat is really cool
- Student1
- StudentWHAT IS THAT!!!!!!?!?!?!????!??
- Studenthow does that thing eat
Bugscope TeamThey pierce plant tissue and drink the juices. They use their mouthparts like a needle tipped syringe
- Student2
- Studentand a person
- Studentthe mouth looks like a nose
- Bugscope Teamthe moth's body is covered with scales
- Student???
- TeacherWe actually found a saddleback this year!
Bugscope Teamsuper cool
Bugscope TeamNice
Bugscope TeamI still remember when I found my first one. There were actually four of them together. It was a cool find.
Bugscope TeamIve only ever found 1. It never pupated for me :( oh well, the moth is pretty boring anyways
- StudentI literally jumped out of my seat when i saw that picture it is very disturbing
- Studentis that the face
Bugscope Teamyes kind of hard to make out
- Studentit does
- TeacherGood job driving, Will!
- Studentwhat is a saddleback?????????????????????????
Bugscope TeamHere's a link to a blog with great pictures: http://jimmccormac.blogspot.com/2013/09/saddleback-caterpillar.html
Bugscope TeamIts body is mostly brown with an intense, almost fluorescent green saddle shape across its back. (Hence the name.) It is surrounded by a skirt of spines that release a nasty chemical that is irritating to skin.
- Studentgood job will!
- Studentit looks like its being proped up on stilits
Bugscope TeamThose are the legs. they are folded in since the moth is dead, but normally they do kind of act like stilts and prop the moth's body up when it is resting on a surface
- Bugscope Teamthe proboscis is coiled up
- StudentGood job will!
- Studentthat saddle back looks like a devil
- Studentlike petals on a flower
- Studentwhat are the petal like looking things on the bug?
- Studentit looks like it has feathers
Bugscope Teamyes and in some ways the scales function like feathers do
- Studentare those leaves?
- Studentdoes every bug have two simple eyes?
- Studentthis bug looks like it has lots of leaves on it.
Bugscope Teamyes those are the scales, one purpose of which is to protect the insect bearing them from getting caught in spider webs
Bugscope TeamAll butterflies and moths, to my knowledge, have scales on their body. So do mosquitos, which probably use them for similar purposes
- Bugscope TeamScott is tweaking the focus.
- Studenthow come you can not see the scales
Bugscope TeamHe is focusing on a scale right now.
- 8:14 am
- Studentthat is cool
- Studentare the holes spiracles?
- Studentare these spiricles
Bugscope TeamAt the moment, these are just some holes in wing scales on the moth.
- Bugscope TeamSome scales have nanostructures on them which is what makes some moths iridescent
- Bugscope Teamthe vertical ridge we see are so small that they interfere with the wavelengths of light
- TeacherScott, one of the kids just googled your name to find a photo of you. He was so curious to put a face with the name. I think that's the first time I've had that happen. :-)
Bugscope Teamscary!
- Bugscope TeamLol I hope it was a good one he found
Bugscope Teamhaha
- StudentI meant how can you not see the scales on the bug with the naked eye/
Bugscope Teambecause they are tiny. they look more like fur to us. Thats why moths look so fuzzy and adorable
- Studentyes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
- TeacherJP to drive, please. Good job driving, Will!
Bugscope TeamJP is the Supreme Commander
- Studentwhat are those holes?Spiracles?
Bugscope Teamthey are pores in the scale that presumably make it a bit lighter
Bugscope Teamspiracles are far larger, but of course it is hard to tell, here, with few references
- Studentwhat am i looking at?
Bugscope Teamthis is the spider's head
- Studentif you look closely it kind of looks like finger prints
Bugscope TeamYes, it does. Though I'm not sure the FBI has a database of spider prints yet. :)
- TeacherAyisat, it does look like fingerprint ridges!
- Studentlike blades of grass stiking out of the spiders body!
Bugscope Teamyes!
- Studentwhat are the things coming out of the holes?
- Studentwhat bug is this
Bugscope TeamEliot this is the spider, one of them.
- Studentspide
- Studentlol fbi
- Studentspider
- Studentit looks like its going bald
Bugscope Teamyeah it's getting old
- Studentspider
- Bugscope TeamYou can see 8 eyes
- Studenttoo much hair!!! it's creepy
- 8:20 am
- Studentwhat are those bumps
Bugscope Teamthose are the eyes
- TeacherWe found multiple tussock moth caterpillars, too. Thankfully everyone listened to the safety instructions. Those saddlebacks are really cool looking. I can't imagine finding four at once.....like treasure!
Bugscope TeamI've never had problems with the skinny ones with the four clusters of yellow setae on their back I found in Illinois or Ohio. I'm not sure I've seen the ones Josh had trouble with. The tussocks I rasied as a kid were always just furry and fun.
Bugscope TeamAre you talking about the white marked tussock moth? and Yeah I'm not sure what species it is. It might not even be a true tussock moth. I'm not the best with Leps :/
Bugscope TeamYes, I was. Orgyia leucostigma. I never had a reaction to them, but when I looked them up just now to confirm the species name, I found that some people do. Unlucky sods! Oh, sorry Josh, that includes you I guess. :)
Bugscope TeamActually I'm perfectly fine with O. leucostigma. Its only those darn yella ones :( And when they pupate they shed the hairs, which become airborne. I made the mistake of raising some in a mason jar in middle school, and the hairs got everywhere when I opened the jar to check on them. Worst week ever
Bugscope TeamProbably more evidence that the species Im referring to is not a true tussock, since I don't react to O.leucostigma
- StudentCool spider, even if it's creepy
- Studentit looks like a tusk
- Studentwhat are those brocolii like things on it's eyes
- Studentthat kind of looks like a bird
- Bugscope Teamsnout beetle!
Bugscope Teamsnuffleupagus beetle.
- Bugscope Teamthe pattern on its dorsal side (its back) makes it reflect kind of sparkly light
- Studentthat thing looks like a moon rock
- Studentwhat are the things coming out its nose
Bugscope Teamthe antennae
- Studentthe compound eye
- Bugscope TeamI couldn't fit everything you sent on this stub. I fit a lot of it though
- Studenti agree mati
- Studentit's ugly.
Bugscope Teamawww
- Studentthat eye has a lot of different things going on there
- Studentmouth
- Studentthis is creepy
- Bugscope TeamThe eye is on the right. T. or Josh could probably fill us in on the pits next to the eye, which are probably sensory.
Bugscope TeamOops. Too slow.
- Studentis that puffy stuff some of its tissue
Bugscope Teamsome of what we see is dried fluid, which doesn't look very good in the 'scope
- Studentit looks like a ant eater
Bugscope TeamThey use their snouts to pierce plant tissue. unlike the true bug we saw earlier though, this guy actually has chewing mouthparts.
Bugscope TeamIts kind of like those extendable arms that old people use to pick up things they dropped without bending over. only they use the clamp at the end to cut into plant tissue instead
Bugscope TeamGrabbers are awesome, man. I used one to yank a bag full of doggie doo out of a tree in my yard. I have some annoying neighbors.
- Studentits hideous
- Studentit looks like it's decomposing
- TeacherCate, it looks like you got a LOT on there! I always try to send extra stuff so that you can choose what will work best. We are thrilled with with what you have given us!
- Studentis all that broccoli looking stuff fungus?
Bugscope Teamhard to tell but I think those were the tips of the antennae
- Studenthahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahgahahahaha
- 8:25 am
- Studentthe mandibles i mean
Bugscope Teamit's the juju that is stuck on the mandibles
- Studentlol to gunnar's question
- Studentits the ant eater
- Studentthe patters are very cool
- Studentyes!
- TeacherGunnar to drive, please. Great job driving, JP!
Bugscope TeamGunnar you are the supreme ruler now.
- Studentwhat is this?
- Studentinside its mouth!
- Studentall hail king gunnar!!
- Studentwhen you zoom in it looks like a giant cave of fuzzy stuff yuck!
- Studentall hail gunner
- Studentall hail king gunnar
- Studentall hail gunnar
- Studentwhat is the dots on the weevil
Bugscope Teamthey reflect light, and some of them have chemosensory setae in them
Bugscope Teamyou can see inside of many of those pits you'll find a hair - those hairs are the setae
- Studentagain the furry moth
- TeacherReally cool!
- Studentawesome picture
- Studentwhy is it so dark?
Bugscope Teamsome places where the sample is charging up with electrons will produce electrons themselves, and those electrons keep the electron beam from hitting the sample there, so it looks black
- Studentit looks like a cactus
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentthis picture looks like a cactus with super sharp neddels
- Bugscope TeamAnt head.
- StudentThe compound eyes are cool
- TeacherWe are wondering what the word "unid" means in the title of the last preset we were on.
- Studentare those hairs?
Bugscope Teamyes we are supposed to call them setae. but we also call them spines, bristles, trichae, and again, hair
- Studentit looks like its starting to make a evil plan with its hands crossed
- Studenthello buggie
- Studentwho are u buggie
- StudentHello buggie
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mandible -- the hinge part
- StudentHello Buggie!!! we are looking at an ants head.
- 8:30 am
- Studentwhat up buggie
- Bugscope TeamWelcome, Buggie. You can ask questions too, if you like.
- Bugscope Teammandible are jaws, and they open left and right like a gate
- Studentcool beans
- Studentbug
- Studentsay something BUGGIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope TeamScot is fixing the pollen. It drifted a bit.
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentwhat is this?
- Studentare you a bug???
- Studentegg timer
- Studentwhat is this?????????
Bugscope TeamMold spore and pollen grain.
Bugscope Teama mold spore conversing with a ragweed pollen grain
- Studentarew you shy,BUGGIE
- Studentthis looks like a pear
- Studentwhat is the bulb and spiky ball thing?
Bugscope Teamthe bulb is a mold spore
Bugscope Teamthe spikey thing is a pollen grain
- Studenthi buggie
- Studentit looks like they are talking.
Bugscope TeamI think so too!
- Studentjust meeting for coffe i think is what there doing
- Guesthi there. i just wanted to check in and see what this Bugscope thing was all about.
Bugscope TeamWelcome. The students are currently controlling an ESEM to explore insect specimens. The ESEM is in Urbana, Illinois, while the class is in Pennsylvania today.
- Studentbudum ch
- Studentpolland grain
- Studentwhat is that spiky thing???!??!?!!!!!!???!?
Bugscope Teamit is a pollen grain from ragweed
- Studentscience jokes oh my :)
- TeacherWonder what that conversation would be like......argument over which one makes me sneeze more?
Bugscope Teamhaha Yeah
Bugscope Teama friendly rivalry
Bugscope TeamPollen spore: "Hey! nice to meet you! you seem like you're a fungi to hang out with!
Bugscope TeamUgh. Did you take HORT 100? I heard that groaner about 100 times on the student quizzes.
Bugscope TeamNope, came up with it on my own. Its not that hard of a joke to think of
- StudentWho are you??????????????
- TeacherJosh....too funny! I'm telling the kids what good science comedy that is.....we don't judge. ;-)
- Studentwho r u
- Studentyeah Josh!!!!!1
- 8:35 am
- TeacherSorry, Buggie. I told them to back off......but now you made them curious....
- Bugscope Teamwe can tell this is a bee because it has branched setae, when we look up close
- Studentwhat is a pollen grain????????!?!?????!?!!!!!?!??
Bugscope Teamflowers produce pollen, and the pollen fertilizes other flowers, resulting, sometimes, in fruit. for example
Bugscope TeamPollen is the sperm-carrying organ of plants. The anthers on the stamens release pollen which when they land on the stigma (female parts) of a flower actually sprout and produce two sperm used to create the seed and fruit.
- Bugscope Teamthis is the tip of the abdomen, where the stinger can often be found
- StudentAm I looking at the rear end of this bug
- Bugscope TeamARGH. Orion launch was just scrubbed for today. I've been up since 5:45 waiting to see that thing launch. Fooey.
- Studentis that a mouth?
- TeacherEliot to drive, please. Good job driving, Gunnar!
Bugscope TeamEliot, you are master of the universe.
- StudentDoes it have a stinger
- Studentis that the stinger?
Bugscope Teamit is not -- for some bizarre reason there is the limb of another insect there
- Studentall hail eliot!!!
- Bugscope TeamInsects are a lot hairier than you might think. They need those hairs to he them feel through their hard exoskeleton
- Studentall hail Eliot! Ruler of the Entire Universe
- Studentthat is coooooooooooolllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamyou are on the nanoscale now
- Bugscope Teamlike the Twlight Zone
- Studentwhen it catches a fly
- Bugscope TeamTwilight Zone...
- Studentit has a lot of hairs!!
Bugscope TeamInsects use almost all of their setae for some sensory purpose - smell, touch, or taste. unlike mammals like you and me, which typically only use hair for thermoregulatory purposes (to keep ourselves warm)
Bugscope TeamI assume you are a mammal.... if you aren't I apologize for my ignorance...
- Studentthat is the coolest thing i have ever seen 9on an insect)
Bugscope Teamsweet
- Studentcool pattern
- Student??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
- GuestI was buggid : )
- Studentu
- Studenthi
- StudentHI
- Studentsweet as a sugar plum :)

Bugscope TeamSorry for outing you, since you were using a pseudonym. :)
- Studentoh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope Teamthis is a spiracle
- StudentMS. WOODRUFF hi
- Studenthello yall
- Guesthello! Mrs. Valenty sent us an email saying that we could check in on your live Bugscop discoveries. this is pretty cool!
- Bugscope TeamDragonfly nymphs helped inspire the alien in the movie Alien
Bugscope TeamSo did parasitic wasps!
- Studentthat looks like a mouthy
Bugscope Teamit is kind of like a nose
- StudentHI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ms.WOODRUFF
- Studentwhat is a nanoscale
Bugscope Teamit means that we are imaging things smaller than micrometers; these are nanometers in diameter
Bugscope TeamNano = 1 billionth. Milli = 1 thousandth, Micro = 1 millionth
- Studentthat looks like a mouth
Bugscope TeamI think it looks more like a blinking eye
- Studentthat looks like a bowl of cotton balls
- 8:40 am
- Studenttwo flies are on a porch which one is a movie star?
- Studentthat is scary!!!!!!!!!
- Studentthat picture is horrifying!!!!!!!!
Bugscope TeamThis is a really nice spiracle. This is what the caterpillar uses to breath. It is a "caterpillar nostril".
- StudentHey I've got a joke. How do spiders comunicate? this is an easy one.
Bugscope TeamThe web?
- Studenthorrifying is correct indeed
- Bugscope Teambreathe
- StudentT. wins the Match!!!
Bugscope TeamYes!
- TeacherA few of us are stuck with the view of the pollen grain and have a "disconnected" in the upper left of the screen. Any suggestions?
Bugscope TeamTry using the browser refresh. If that doesn't work, try logging in with a new name.
Bugscope Teamleft behind
Bugscope TeamLet me know if either of those things fail to work.
- Studentvideo games have ruined my life good thing I got 2 more
Bugscope Teamhaha
- Studentthat is a BEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????????
Bugscope TeamIt is a very small one.
- Studentis it an eye
Bugscope Teamits a caterpillar spiracle. It opens into the caterpillars respiratory system.
Bugscope Teaminsects have a sistem of ducts called tracheae that supply air to their body cells directly through diffusion. They don't actively breathe per se the way you and I do.
Bugscope TeamAgain, assuming youre a mammal here
- Studentpoor bug is it dead?
Bugscope TeamSomeone just watch "Oklahoma"?
Bugscope Teamyes they are all dead and dry
- Guesti don't know oliver. which on is a movie star?
- TeacherBrowser refresh worked! Thanks
Bugscope TeamGood!

- Studentthere is a dark abyss in the insect
- Studenthi new people!
- StudentHe goes up the wall
Bugscope Teamnice

- Studentheres another. What does a spider do when he gets angry. It's dumb, but cool. ish.
Bugscope Teamyou've got me
Bugscope TeamIf he's a tarantula, he doesnt get angry. He just shakes it off. Ha. urticating hairs joke...
Bugscope Teamnice Josh
Bugscope TeamYay! Nerd humor! :)

- Studentwhat is that?????????!??!??!!!!??
- Studentcan you switch to house fly head
Bugscope Teamthat is up to the current Supreme Commander of the Microscope
- Studentwhat is this thing
- Studenthi vishall
- Studentwhat is what
Bugscope TeamWhy 188? I dont think there are that many Rajanreddy's you need to distinguish yourself from atm...
- Bugscope Teamhere we can see where the compound eye collapsed when the insect died
- Studenthi raj
- Studentthat
- Studentis that hair on it
- Student188????!!?!?
- Bugscope Teamthese are microsetae
- StudentI think so
- Studentexcept not as tasty
- Studentlike pasta
- 8:51 am
- Studentthat is polarized ommatidia
- Studentwhy are you guys talking about pasta
- Bugscope Teamthey may form a pattern that other members of the species recognize; they may add surface area, making it easier to fly...
- Studentscales
- Studentnow it is moth ommatidia
- Studentnow vishal is driving
- Studenthe has a star
- Studentwhat do you mean by that
- Studentwhat are mold spores
Bugscope Teamthey're like little pods filled with baby mold
Bugscope TeamThey're analagous to "seeds" in plants. Fungi have very strange reproductive cycles.
Bugscope TeamMold will shoot these into the air so that it can spread
- Studentcool!
- Studentthat is so weird
- Studentwhat are the things on the bug
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mold spore as well, but rather unhappy
- Studentis it a seed pod
- Studenthuh?
- Studentis everyone in?
- Studentare those compound eyes on the bug
- Bugscope Teamant head upside down
- Studentwhat was that
- StudentI thought that to josh.
Bugscope TeamYou thought what to me?

Bugscope Teamlooks like we're near the "foot"
- Studentyes
- Studentvishal is moving the pics
- StudentIt won't let me change a picture
Bugscope Teamask if you may drive next
- Studentwhy does it keep moving
Bugscope TeamI think it is because someone is driving, and it keeps refereshing
Bugscope TeamI think the kingmaker Vishal may be moving around a bit too quickly for the video to fully update before it moves again.
Bugscope TeamTry to take time moving.
- Studentwhoever is driving stop changing it
- Studenthi :)
- Studenthow do I get it to go to a different picture/
- TeacherAnd good driving, Vishal!

- Bugscope TeamAnd tears
- Studentawesome creepy ness
Bugscope Teamyay That is what we are going for.
- Studentawesome
- Studentthats wrong
- Studentcan you stop saying that
- Bugscope TeamFun Fact: There is a moth that drinks blood
Bugscope TeamThere are also moths that drink animal tears.
Bugscope TeamAt least one species appears to feed exclusively on mammal tears as an adult.
Bugscope TeamThere is also the moth radio hour on NPR.
- Studentpeter why no moving
- Studentme?
- Studentpeter please move it
- Studentstop driving so fast
- Bugscope Teamthis, now, is a small bee

- Studentwhat is that
- Studentwho is Josh?
Bugscope TeamIn not so many words, a rock star
Bugscope TeamJosh is an entomology student here
Bugscope TeamRock star is another term for entomologists
Bugscope TeamI thought hip-hop was more popular now. So I guess that makes T-dot more awesomer!
- Student?!
- Studentthose look like lips
- Studentcan we look at the caterpillar spiracle?
Bugscope TeamMya ask Peter...
Bugscope TeamMya it looks like you have some influence here.
- Studentmy uncle is an entomologist
Bugscope TeamDo you know what kinds of insects he studies?
- Studentcan you tell us an animal joke
- Studentwhat is that
- StudentWho is Daniel
- Studentit looks like coral
- Studentwhat is that :0
Bugscope TeamThis is the caterpillar spiracle. It is what the caterpillar uses to breathe. Like a nostril, except in the side of its body.
- Studentcreepy
- Studentthat looks like an up close of a carpet
- StudentWhere do u live?
Bugscope TeamWe're all from Urbana-Champaign, Illinois.
- StudentDaniel is Daniel
- StudentWE DON'T KNOW!
- Studentthis looks like coral

- Studentshow the weevil
- Studentcan we see the caterpillar spiracle Maite?
- StudentThis is so cool!
- TeacherMrs. Valenty here again. Maite to drive, please. Good driving, Peter!
Bugscope TeamMaite is the Queen Bee.
- Studentwhat is that thing hanging of of it
Bugscope Teamthis is some juju, maybe frass
- Studentit probably did
- Studentwhat is that!!!!
- Studentit has a ton of dots on it1
- Studentwhat is that?
- Studentlooks like an ant eater
- Studentaka is this a bug head?
- Studentwhat kind of spider is this
Bugscope Teamnot sure... I'm sorry -- we're not very good with spiders
Bugscope TeamIt's hard to tell without seeing the whole body, but many spiders are ID'd by looking at their eye arrangement
Bugscope TeamBased solely on eye arrangement I think it may belong to an orb weaver (Araneus) or a prowling spider (Cheiracanthium)
- Studentthis thing has cool antennaes
- TeacherCongratulations, Josh! Living the dream. (No, really, I'm serious. Insects are awesome.)
- Studentwhat is this
- Student˙´¬¬ø ∫¨©ß¡
- Studentthis
- Studentß∂©˙ˆß¬
- Studentthis looks like it ccame from a horror movie
Bugscope TeamYes, there's a reason Ridley Scott and HR Giger made the Alien xenomorph look very insectoid. Insects can be quite strange looking.
- StudentwhAT DID U JUST TYPE!!!????!!!!
- Studentwill
- StudentAlex??
- Studentwhats going on'
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentalex?
- Studentthis thing has a big nose
- StudentIf that is its nose
- Studentwhat are the big dots next to it
Bugscope Teamthose are craters in the carbon tape
Bugscope TeamThe carbon tape is what is holding the insects to the metal stage inside the scope. We can show you what that stage looks like if you'd like to see it.
- Studentlook at its eyes!
- Bugscope Teamthis is a weevil, also called a snout beetle, so cute
- Studentwe looked art weevil larva
- Studentwhy do people keep typing my name?
- StudentNOT CUTE

Bugscope TeamThe Praying Mantids! They're the only insects that can actually turn their heads to the side
Bugscope TeamThat or Strepsiptera
Bugscope TeamWell, I study Trap-jaw ants, so I would have to pick one of those species, although I would have a hard time choosing one species. The genus Strumigenys is probably my favorite group of trap-jaw ants though. Google them sometime.
Bugscope TeamHere is what a Strepsipteran looks like
Bugscope Teamhttp://rameau.snv.jussieu.fr/strepsfotos/6.png
Bugscope TeamIt's head is sticking out of the abdomen of the other insect
Bugscope TeamHeres a link to Alex Wild's photographs of Strumigenys: http://www.alexanderwild.com/Ants/Taxonomic-List-of-Ant-Genera/Strumigenys/

Bugscope Teamabout a gram, likely a bit less
- StudentHow long is it?
- Studentare these bugs alive
- StudentHow long is it
- Studentit is 101 % magnified
- Studentwho is driving
- Studentidk
- StudentHow many times bigger is this than life size?
Bugscope Teamyou can look at the bottom of the screen to get a current reading
Bugscope Team101x magnified. 100 times life size. So this is a small spider.
- StudentHow close can the microscope zoom in
- StudentI found a Conozoa carinata and one leg was longer than the other. Is that normal?
- Studentwhy is it hairy
Bugscope Teamthe hairs help it sense vibration; some spiders also have hairs that they shoot out of their bodies for protection
- Studentis this a spider
- StudentAre those bumpy spots the spider's eyes?
- StudentAre those bumps it's eyes ?
- Student???
- Studentit has alot of hair
- Bugscope TeamSorry folks, but I have a previously scheduled Dr.'s appointment to go to. So I have to bow out right now. This has been a fun session and I'll miss y'all!

Bugscope TeamSorry Justin. Sometimes ours do as well.
- Studentbye Daniel :(
- Studenti wonder if the bumps are the eyes or the eyes are int he bumps?
- Bugscope TeamLater Daniel.
- Studentbye daniel not scot
- Bugscope TeamI hereby hand over scope control delegation authority to Mr. Scot. Be careful, Scot. With great power comes great responsibility.
- StudentHow old are you guys?
Bugscope Teamthere's a range from the early 20s to the 50s
- Studentcan he see out of those bumps?
Bugscope Teamyes he can, but not super well
Bugscope TeamOrb weavers have very poor eyesite. they can essentially only sense changes in light levels
- Studentyes all spiders have hairs on them
- Student.....
- Studentcool
- StudentGaret's name is actualy spelled Garrett
- Studenthow old cn the spider get?
Bugscope Teamdepends on the spider - some spiders can live 20years!
- TeacherLife tip from Mrs. V: We old people don't love those age questions.
- 9:41 am
- Studentis it true that spiders have spiricles
Bugscope Teamthat is a good question; I have never seen them.
- Studentok
- Studentthanks
- Studentit has 8 eyes
Bugscope TeamMost spiders do, although some have six, and some have no eyes at all. eyeless spiders are particularly common in caves
Bugscope TeamThere are even some spiders with 4 or only 2 eyes as well
Bugscope TeamThanks T. Didnt know that.
- TeacherCB, good question!
- Studenti was just wondering, do all spiders have hairs on their body
Bugscope Teamprobably...
- Bugscope Teamthis is a weevil

- Studentwhere do they live???
- TeacherEliza to drive, please. Great driving, Rachel!
- Studentwhat are the weevils predators
- Studentthx
- Studentwhat is the order of this insect?
Bugscope TeamColeoptera, according to Wikipedia
- TeacherI actually found this weevil and several hundred of his friends in a bag of popcorn kernels. (The kind you buy to use in an air popper.)
Bugscope Teamsuper cool
- StudentHow much does it weigh ?
- Studentwhat are the hole things?
- StudentSounds terrifying =)
- Studentwhat are the spots
- Studenthow much does the weevil weigh
- Studentlag ._.
- StudentWhat is the most common Weavel found in North America
Bugscope TeamNot sure. There are many species of weevils. I believe they are the second most specious family of beetles, and I believe there are over 40000 species world wide. You kind of have to be an expert to know
Bugscope TeamIf I had to guess, Id pick one of the billbugs, since they infest grass, and we as humans tend to be quite fond of grasses.
- Studenthow much does it way
- Studentwhat are those circle things?
Bugscope Teamcarbon tape
- Student+weigh
- Studentwhat are the dips in the abdomen?
Bugscope Teamsome of those hold tiny chemoreceptors and some, I think, make the insect appear to iridesce.
- Studentit has 6 holes
- 9:47 am
- TeacherYeah, I thought finding an infested bag of popcorn was really cool, too. Strangely, my family didn't share my enthusiasm. Crazy people.
- Studentwhere do weevils live?
- Studentis this a small weevil
- Studentmaybe they r acorns?
- Studenthaha
- StudentWhat do weevil's eat?
- Studentis popcorn a grain because weevils love to eat grains, and Mrs.Valenty found theme in a popcorn bag?
Bugscope Teamyes it actually worked out nicely that way, except for the eating popcorn part
- Studentwhat are the weevils predators
Bugscope TeamI don't know of any predatory weevils. they typically eat seeds, leaves, or plant juices
Bugscope TeamBirds sometimes eat them or other insects
- StudentI think it was a weevil
Bugscope Teamprotein
- Studentha
- Studentlol
- Studentcan somebody move the screen
- Studentcan somebody change the pic.
- StudentI found a worm in my salad also!
- StudentLoL
- Studentyeah
- Studentcaterpillars make great protein though
- Studentr weavils invasive?
Bugscope TeamSome weevils are. Like I said though, there are 40,000+ species, not all of which are invasive everywhere
- TeacherEliza to drive, please.
- Studentmy dad once found an insect in his salad
Bugscope TeamI found a caterpillar in my broccoli soup when I was 8.
Bugscope TeamCaterpillars don't make very good seasoning fyi
- Studenti would not eat one
- Studentonce i found a stinkbug in my salad
- StudentWhoa
- Studentwhat is that?
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentwhat is that
- Studentdo weevils have spiricles
Bugscope TeamYes, but they are probably hidden under the elytra (hardened outer wings), so we can't see them
- Studentit lookes like those fuzzy caterpillars :)
- StudentIt looks like lips
- Studentthis is a caterpillar spiracle
- Studentsorry not to spasific
- TeacherIt does look like lips!
- Studentwhat is the ditch like thing?
- Studentyeah
- Studentthese look like lips. lol
Bugscope Teamthey can open and close kind of like lips
- Studentwhy r weeveles called weeveles
Bugscope Teamit is said to be Old English, from 'wifel,' meaning 'moving briskly.'
Bugscope TeamFarmers and turf grass managers also call them billbugs, because they have long snouts
- Studentcaterpillar spiricles differe from each species, I think
- Studentidk
- StudentWhy are there multiple spots in the spiracle?
- Studentthats cool
- StudentWhat is this?
- TeacherWhen you have a chance, can you switch the driver to Eliza, please?
- Studentr they invasive?
Bugscope Teamyes, sometimes
- Studentwhat are the bumps in the spiricle
- Studentcould you please change the driver to Eliza? Thx.

Bugscope Teamthis is an odd-looking one, and it seems to be closed
- Studentis it like a lip?
Bugscope Teamkind of
- StudentFUZZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Studentthey are so harry!! lol
- Studentharry
- Studentwhere does the air go in
Bugscope TeamThrough the spiracle. the caterpillar can open and close the spiracle
- Studentwhat is that fuzzy stuff?
- Studentwhy are they so fuzzy?
- StudentFUZZY!!!!!!
- Studentdo you know which caterpillar, this spiricle is from
Bugscope Teamit's the one you sent that we just looked at
- StudentI think from the fuzzy part
- Studentso is closed now
- Studentdo the spiracles on other insects look the same?
- TeacherThis was a caterpillar that Maite brought in that I inadvertently killed.
- 9:52 am
- StudentSea Anemones or nah?
Bugscope Teamlooks a lot like sea anemones
- StudentIt looks like a bush
- StudentWhy are they fuzzy looking?
Bugscope Teamthey function like filters to keep dust out
- StudentHow often do catapillar open there spiracels to breath
Bugscope TeamI'm not sure exactly. They close them more often when they are dehydrated or warmer as they are more likely to lose water if they leave their spiracles open
- StudentITS SO FLUFFY!!!!!
- StudentCan I go to Drive please
- Studentor how ever you speel it
- Studentthere may be eggs in there
Bugscope Teamprobably not unless they came from a parasitic wasp
- Studentthey look like those things in the sea

- Studentdoes that thing live underwater?
Bugscope Teamno this is just the breathing apparatus for caterpillars
- Studentno
- TeacherLooks like modern art!
Bugscope Teamyes it does
Bugscope TeamWell, Spiracles have been around for hundreds of millions of years. So really, its very ancient art. Picasso's the one who's modern

- Studentcool
- Studentoh
- Studentyeah HD
- StudentAre there often mold spores on human eyes, as well as these arthropods?
- Studentthere are so many little lenses! ;)
Bugscope Teamthey are called ommatidia
Bugscope Teammany cartoon make it seem as though each eye sees it's own image so insects end up seeing what ever it is looking at 100+ times, but really each lense helps put together one single image
- TeacherAlthough it would be super confusing for you(Scott, Josh, & T), I wish you could hear the great conversations/ comments from the kids. Lots of funny and interesting stuff, here.
- Studentwhat type of mold, can you tell?
- Studentthey look like hexogons
- Studentoh...
- Studentwhen we dye
- Studentoh... again
- Studentso nasty :(
- Studentwhat are the black dots between the lenses?
Bugscope Teamthat is what I was wondering -- some of them may be holes where there were once setae, or hairs
- Studentdoes mold grow on human eyes
Bugscope Teamum usually after you die
Bugscope TeamOr, if you stop blinking and sit in a very damp, dark, warm place for a very long period of time without moving, you could maybe grow something
- Studentthat was scary...
- Studentthat looks scary :(
- StudentLooks like feathers
- Studentit looks like it has feathers
- Studentwhat are those holes near the eyes
Bugscope TeamI think some of them at least were where there had been sensory setae

Bugscope TeamYay Thank You, T.!
Bugscope Teambut not too well
Bugscope TeamSome butterflies can too maybe? Its been about 5 years since someone told me that and I never looked into it
Bugscope TeamConfirmed - some butterflies can se IR, but like bees, not too well. There are some beetle that can sense IR with some sensory structures.

- Studentby bryce
- StudentWho is driving?
- Studentby garret
- StudentWow that looks cool
- StudentAre other 'bugs' capable of sensing these vibrations from their own species or another?
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope TeamI think we can go 'til 10:30 our time, 11:30 your time.
- TeacherSo the flies sense the vibrations of other insects wings because......? Is it a protective thing?
Bugscope TeamAt least in mosquitoes, its primarily used to find conspecifics for mating. males can sense the vibrations of female mosquitoes wings and hone in on that.
Bugscope TeamAnd in some species the males and females vibrate their wings synchronously at very high frequencies as part of a courtship ritual, so being able to sense what speed your partner is vibrating her wings at is very useful in that respect
- Studentplz
