Description | My students will be completing a 5 to 6 week project studying genetics in the fruit fly. During this project they will be learning all about the common fruit fly, its anatomy and why it is an ideal specimen to use to study genetics and inherited traits. In addition, they will be studying genetic traits and how they are passed down and acquired. Specifically they will be studying the sex-linked trait of eye color.
I would love to use this tool as a way for them to gain more experiences with microscopes. I currently use dissecting and compound light microscopes in the classroom. My students are advanced students and will be taking more advanced classes, specifically Anatomy and Physiology/ AP Biology in which the understanding of SEM will be important to understand the material being presented. This would be a great way to introduce that tool to them. I would love them to see the anatomy of the fruit flies they are studying up close and personal. I currently teach them how to view fruit flies under the dissecting microscope in order to sex and count them in our genetics study. I think by using this tool they would have a better appreciation of the fruit fly. In addition, I think it would be a great way to engage them and get them excited about science! |
