- GuestChaos how did you decide to work at bugscope?
Bugscope TeamI got hired in 1998 to help start it
- Guestwhat is a earwig ?
Bugscope Teamthey are those skinny pincher bugs you find when you pick up a rock
- TeacherHello I am the science teacher working with the computer teacher
- Guestoh okay

- Guesthi mommy
- TeacherAre we working with an insect?
Bugscope Teamthis is an insect larva, but I am sorry we don't know what kind it is

Bugscope TeamDude we don't know -- it is a larval stage, like a caterpillar
- Studentcan we have the microscope?
Bugscope TeamMrs Belz has it now
- Student(jeremy asked that)
- Guestwhat are the spikes on his back?
Bugscope Teamthey keep other insects and birds from biting it
- Studentdo you have multiple scopes up?

- GuestWhat's the most interesting bug you have seen or discovered using the microscope?
Bugscope Teamwe have seen some beautiful beetles, and mites, and weevils, and flies... it is hard to think of the coolest
- GuestHow long have you been working here?
- Guestyes
- StudentDID I HURT THE MICROSCOPE
Bugscope Teamno you didnt
- TeacherWhat are the phangs coming out of his mouth
Bugscope Teamthose are palps -- they are used to help taste and manipulate food into the mouth
- Studenthow can you hurt the microscope
Bugscope Teamyou could jam the specimen into the pullpiece (where the beam comes out)
- StudentCan we have the microscope?
- Studentmrs. belz look at preset 13 or 14
- Guestok
- GuestChaos what are the spikes on the bugs back??
Bugscope Teamthose are likely defensive -- to keep birds from eating the larva -- and also to help keep parasitic wasps at bay
- Guestwhere are the eyes
- Guestwho started the institute ?
- Bugscope Teambut really you wouldnt be able to do that with bugscope
- Studentwhat are the spikes on its back?
Bugscope Teamthose are probably for defensive measures. Things will be less likely to eat it when there are spikes
- Studentok
- StudentCan we see a mosquito?
Bugscope Teamwe have a couple on here
- Guestwat does it take to get on the team of bugscope
- Bugscope Teamwe've made it break proof for the most part

- TeacherCan you swithc the microscope to Curry
Bugscope TeamCurry has it
Bugscope Teamcurry has control
- Studentwhat are the hairs on its legs?
Bugscope Teaminsects have lots of hairs on them. They are called setae when found on bugs. since all bugs have a hard exoskeleton that can't feel anything, they need some way to sense their environment. that's where the setae come in. they are sensory organs that stick through the exoskeleton and attach to nerves underneath
- Studentya
- Guestwhat is the most interesting bug you have ever seen with bugscope
Bugscope Teamactually we saw some really cool mites that were shedding their cuticle, like slipping out of a t-shirt
- Guestwhy did you decide to be on bugscope
- Guestwow
- Guestcan i have da microscope after curry plz?

Bugscope Teamtwice a week. we really enjoy it
- Studenti called it
- Guestwow!!!
- Studentthis is towards cate and chaos(scott) are you professers or students/
Bugscope Teamwe are neither. We are scientists. we work in a lab with many different kinds of microscopes and other imaging equipment

- GuestWhat is this?
- Studentwhy a moth, riley
- Studenthow often do they go into this period of innactivity?
Bugscope Teamif they are day insects like bees, they will go into the state of *torpor* (i spelled it wrong before sorry) all night and 'wake' in the morning. I think night insects like moths are the opposite
- Studenti wish i could do that... just watch tv not need to go to sleep heheh

- Studentdis is amazing the coolist one EVER.
- Guestcate: is the institute about bugs?
Bugscope Teamno, it's about different science projects. Where I work in the building has different kinds of microscopes. We don't just do bugscope all day. We also image different kinds of samples like carbon nanotubes or microchips.
- Studentso how do the rolly pollys breath do they have lungs too?
Bugscope Teamapparently the gills allow them to breathe air -- like crabs that live on the land
- StudentWhat are we looking at right now?
- StudentOS THIS A HEAD

Bugscope TeamI like learning new things so what better project than bugscope, where I am always learning it feels like
- Guestis this bug is a shell
Bugscope Teamyou know all insects have an exoskeleton, so they all have shells, in that way
- StudentHOW MANY SCOPES DO YOU HAVE AT THE INSTITUTE
Bugscope Teamwe have maybe 15 down here, and there are more throughout the building, but ours are generally better, more versatile
