- Bugscope TeamGood morning!
- TeacherGood morning, all...you're probably just getting things set up. This is Kelly and Moira ("Mo") from Vermont.
- Bugscope TeamWe're working on the presets.
- TeacherGreat to see you, Scott! Mo says 'good morning'!!! She's very excited.
- Bugscope TeamFeel free to watch while we drive around and collect good places for the session.
- TeacherOooh, are those mites on this critter?
- TeacherThe little oblong bits.
- Bugscope Teamwe can give you control as soon as we are done with presets
- Bugscope Teamthose are scales
- Bugscope Teamloose scales
- TeacherSounds good. Should I stop typing, so you can work? :-)
- TeacherMo is laughing out loud.
- Teacher"That's neat!" she says!
- TeacherWonderful, we'll try to keep it to a minimum. :-) This looks like some sort of moth?
- Bugscope Teamthat was the head of the earwig
- Teacheryikes! :-)
- Bugscope Teamthese kind of critters have built-in wirestrippers
- Bugscope TeamAlex may have to restart the server
- Teacherok
- 7:49 am
- Bugscope Teamwe're gonna have to reboot the system...
- Teachershoul i not relog in?
- Bugscope Teamwe are good now, no problemo
- Bugscope Teamjust had to restart the server that handles the live imaging from the scope
- Bugscope Teamdon't worry. if we go down we will erase your BRAT name so you can use it again, but we're good again..
- TeacherI see.
- Bugscope Teamhappens once and a while
- TeacherHehe..."Nasty looking," says Mo.
- TeacherWOW
- Bugscope Teamthat is a caterpillar proleg
- TeacherAwesome
- Bugscope Teamthe little eyes are called stemmata
- 7:54 am
- Bugscope TeamCate put on as many of yours as she had, or was possible. We usually add stuff to fill in, or if some of the samples we get are not imageable.
- TeacherThat's what I figured. :-) Any way to know if there was an armored mayfly that came out okay?
- Bugscope Teamwatch for it
- Teacherok
- TeacherThat's pretty
- Teacherpollen?
- Bugscope Teamyeah this is the coolest beetle
- Bugscope Teamyep!
- Teacher:-)
- Bugscope Teamthe wildest claws I have ever seen
- TeacherWow, is that the armored mayfly??
- 8:00 am
- TeacherWe're expecting Steve from the State lab, and Miss Cal and her students from Riverside.
- Bugscope Teamsounds good
- TeacherSteve should be a big help!
- TeacherIs there a way to expand the chat screen, perhaps to the side?
Bugscope Teamno, the image width is set. these are live images from the microscope, so it needs to be at a stable frame size
- TeacherHey, look at that...you did something? :-) Chat is now running off to the left side of the screen.
Bugscope Teamwhen we answer a specific question, the answer will show up to the left. but we don't always answer questions like that
- TeacherBut my questions are showing up twice. :-9
Bugscope Teamsometimes that happens, a hickup in the chat...
- Bugscope Teamwe can grab questions and answer them to the left if we want to
- Bugscope Teamall the chat and images are saved to your bugscope member page, so you can review the entire session in detail anytime after: http://bugscope.beckman.illinois.edu/members/2009-159
- 8:06 am
- TeacherExcellent, thanks.
- TeacherDid any of our aquatic critters make it into the slides today?
- Bugscope Teamthis is one of them. these are not slides. these are aluminum stubs 1.75 inches in diameter
- Bugscope Teamwater beetle, backswimmer, yeah, they are they, check presets 5 and 4
- Bugscope Teamwe put all of the samples you sent that were good on the stub
- TeacherStub, not slide. :-) Got it. Great, the stonefly looks awesome!
Bugscope Teamheh, well, the bugs are all on a stub inside the electron microscope, and we are looking at live real time video/images from that electron microscope, which you will control in a moment (when the presets are done, almost there!)
- 8:11 am
- TeacherI was worried that most of them didn't make it, seeing as they are aquatic perhaps they had too much soft tissues to survive the drying process?
Bugscope Teamyeah, that does happen, the drying will shrivel up the insects very badly sometimes.
- TeacherCool, that looks like a water penny!
- Teacherno, sowbug. he's jointed
- Teachersorry
- TeacherSteve will know.
- TeacherIgnore me.
- Bugscope TeamThese were critical point dried to preserve them as well as possible.
- Bugscope Teamthese are crustaceans
- TeacherDrat, it's hard to tell at this magnification! Hehe. I've never seen them this close up before.
Bugscope Teamheh, there's a lot OTHER interesting things to see at high mag though, it'll be cool
- 8:18 am
- TeacherI am holding my breath to see if the armored mayfly shows up. :-) They look like little VW Beetles with the naked eye!
- Bugscope Teamwe just put it on
- Bugscope TeamOkay BRAT you have control
- Teacher*happy grins* Trying to type with my 3-yar-old son on my lap.
- TeacherOMG, you're kidding.
- TeacherHow do I start??
- Bugscope Teamyou should see controls to the right
- Bugscope Teamyou can change mag
- Teacherok
- Bugscope Teamclick to center is better than click to drive
- Bugscope Teamyou can also click on any of the presets (one click) to get the 'scope to drive to that place
- TeacherMoira's going to steer. :-)
- Bugscope Teamso if something is OOF you can take the focus up or down
- 8:23 am
- Bugscope Teamthis is the underside of the head of this larva
- Bugscope Teamthere is often a lot of debris on water critters
- Bugscope Teamwe see diatoms, sometimes
- TeacherMo says it looks like he has a beard...are those hairs> setae?
- Bugscope Teamyes those are setae
- Bugscope Teamone of the water beetles has really cool ones
- Bugscope Teamlike a wispy goatee on a beatnik
- Bugscope Teamthis is bizarre
- Bugscope Teamthese are tarsi on a leafhopper
- TeacherWhat's bizarre?
- Bugscope Teamand you can see a scale
- TeacherTarsi being claws?
- Bugscope Teamtarsi are the final four or five segments of the limbs, including the end with the claw
- TeacherGreat...do you guys ever look at tardigrades (water bears)?
- Bugscope Teamwe imaged a bunch of tardigrades for NASA and put them on Virtual Microscope
- TeacherYou did the ones for NASA???? Way cool!
- 8:28 am
- TeacherMo wants to know what that white speck is.
Bugscope Teamhmm, not sure, maybe it's juju (dirt, grime, junk, stuff we aren't sure what it is...)
- TeacherLOL 'juju'! I'm going to start using that now. Must be a scientific term. :-D
- Bugscope Teamwe set Virtual Microscope up for NASA a few years ago and are planning to upgrade it -- we have a proposal with NSF in for that
- Bugscope Teamwe critical point dried your samples so they would retain most of their shape from when they were fresh. Otherwise, if they were air dried, they would shrink and probably not look so good. Anyways, some of those little fluffy things are a byproduct from critical point drying
- Bugscope TeamHi Moira!
- GuestWell, we're back...it's under Moira now, not BRAT.
- Bugscope Teamhi moira, welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Teamwe gave you control again
- Bugscope Teamif you want, you can log in as BRAT again, we fixd it
- 8:33 am
- GuestNow we don't have access to the presets...we're a guest? I will log out and relog as BRAT. :-)
- GuestWait, there they are....
- Bugscope Teamwait!
- Bugscope Teamgood
- Bugscope Teamwe gave you control...
- Bugscope Teamthat means you should see the presets
- Bugscope TeamMojo wanted to know what the Juju was
- Guesti'm a begginer tiper so i'm slow
- Bugscope Teamlike me
- Guestreally?
- Bugscope Teamit takes me forever to get a sentence out
- Bugscope TeamI am getting better
- Guestyeah i know how you feel.
- Bugscope Teambe sure and try clicking on another preset
- Bugscope Teamha you beat me to it
- Bugscope Teamyou can see some of the armor now
- Guestneat looking
- Guestwhats that spiral stick thing?
- Bugscope Teamthese are critters we are not very familiar with -- these larvae
- Guestokay
- 8:38 am
- Bugscope Teamit looks like some kind of membrane that has dried and shriveled
- Guestthe thing in the center looks like a shirivaled wing
- Guestcould be a membrain
- Bugscope Teamif you click on the scale bar in the lower left, it'll tell you more detail about the microscope parameters
- Bugscope Teamit does resemble a haltere, in a some ways
- Guesti need a minuet
- Guestbrb
- Bugscope Teamok
- Guesti'm back
- 8:43 am
- Bugscope TeamI guess this is technically a nymph
- Bugscope Teamwelcome
- Bugscope Teamthe whole critter, at this stage in its lifecycle
- Bugscope Teamthis is cool
- Bugscope TeamI like leafhoppers
- Guesti want to find out whats next to it
- Bugscope Teamits eyes are streamlined into the side of its bullet-shaped head
- Bugscope Teamthat is another larva
- Bugscope Teamthe one we think is a stonefly larva
- Bugscope Teamyou can see it has six legs
- Bugscope Teamyeah a lot of these look like hellgrammites
- Guestmabey a caddisfly out of its home
- Bugscope Teamactually it looks like there are lots of different larvae called hellgrammites
- Bugscope TeamI am sorry we are not very good with aquatic insects -- we don't see them that often
- Bugscope Teamthis is the tip of the abdomen, and you can see two cerci
- Guestwe vote caddisfly freeswiming or out of home
- 8:49 am
- Bugscope Teamsounds good to me
- GuestKelly here; do you remember finding a little casing or tube made out of tiny pebbles?
Bugscope TeamI don't remember seeing anything like that when I dried your samples...
- GuestOr made out of plant material?
- Bugscope Teammaybe I missed it
- GuestOkay; I'll go look for the tally sheets from the kids that tells us what we found that day, see if I can come up with any ideas before folks log on. :-)
- GuestControls back to MoJo...
- Bugscope Teamwe've looked at caddisflies, stoneflies, and mayflies before, but we have trouble keeping them straight
- Bugscope Teamand there are different species
- Guestokay
- Bugscope Teamwe have seen the kind that build little rock cocoons around themselve
- Bugscope Teams
- Bugscope Teambe sure to cruise to some other presets
- Guest"rock cocoons" are the caddisflys
- Bugscope Teamright
- Guestthey are the contractors of the river
- Bugscope Teamwe can learn something today
- Guesthe he he

- Studenti thik so tiger
- Guestwhat is a compound eye?
- Guestidk is it
- Guestwelll that is so cool riches
- Bugscope Teaminsects don't have internal bones, so they would just turn into blobs if it wasn't for the hard outer shell called an exoekeleton
- Guestcool
- GuestWhat's that, jagged edge in the middle, that looks broken?
Bugscope Teamwe are at high mag, so it is hard to tell just what it is -- it is some kind of malformation in the cuticle on the head
Bugscope Teamlooks like part of the exoskeleton is cracked?
- Guesti am
- Guestthats cool
- Guestok ms cal well type slower

- Studenthead*
- Guestz man!!!!!
- Studentthats a ugly grasshopper head
- Guestwhy dont insects have skin
Bugscope Teamthey have their skeleton on the outside -- an exoskeleton
- Guestwhats the difference between a compound eye and our normal eye
Bugscope Teama compound eye has hundreds of individual lens's each inside its own facet called ommatidia. those lens's are stuck in one position. human eyes have lens's that can move around to get a better angle of view.
- Guestit has like little legs in its mouth aka mandibles
- StudentTHIS IS A GRASS HOPPER HEAD
- Guest it is so awsome yes yes it is
- Guestthis is cool

- Studentdo they have any form of teeth?
Bugscope Teamthey have hardened mandibles
- Guesthey mrs cal what is this
- StudentDo they lay eggs?
- Guestidk
- StudentIts skin sorta looks like armor
Bugscope Teamit is a lot like a suit of armor! We often compare it to that. That's why insects have so many hairs. Without it, they would be fumbling around in their armor, unable to feel what's going on.
- Guestit look likes a leg sticking out of its head
Bugscope Teamthose are palps
Bugscope Teamwell, not a leg, those are mandibles
- Bugscope Teamthey do not have teeth
