Bugscope Teamnone of the insects in the microscope are alive. They would need to be dead and dry to be able to image them well
- Studenthow old is it
Bugscope Teamprobably less than a year old -- most insects don't live more than a season]
- Studenthow many eggs can they at once

- Studentumm gross
- Bugscope Teamthey don't have teeth but they have hard mouthparts
- Studentcan you eat it

Bugscope Teamno but there is a bumblebee on here that has mites living on it, or I should say "were" living on it since they are dead too
- Studentcan they grow five years
- StudentDO THE EGGS COME OUT OF THOSE BROKEN ENTENAS?????
Bugscope Teamthe eggs usually come out of an ovipositor, which is kind of like a stinger that delivers eggs

- Studentare they preyed on by anything?
Bugscope Teamreptiles and birds eat them
- StudentNARLY!!!!!!!!!!!
- 9:29 am
- Studentit looks funny
- Studentwhat does it eat?
- Studentwhere is the mouth?
- Studentdo they breath like humans?
- StudentIs it old or a baby?
Bugscope TeamIt was probably a young cricket because it's small
- StudentIS THIS DEAD?
Bugscope Teamyes it's dead. It would be mean if we were to stick a live insect in a vacuum chamber and then shot an electron beam at it!
- StudentGROSS !!!!!!!!!!!
- Studentdo they have prey
- Studentcoool
- Studentis it hary
Bugscope Teamthey do have hairs as well
- Studenty dos the eye hav hair
Bugscope Teamsome insect eyes will have hair in between the facets of the compound eyes. We know in fruit fly they are used to help it tell the direction of wind currents for better flight and maneuverability
- Studentwhat do THEYeat
- Studentdo they smell with there nose or do they not have a nose/:(
Bugscope Teamusually insects do not have noses that smell things -- they use setae that are adapted to sense chemicals in the air, which is what smells are
- Studentwhat do they eat?
Bugscope TeamCrickets are omnivores and feed on almost anything-usually organic materials, plant decay, grass, fruits, seedling plants, fungi and even meat.
- TeacherHow exactly do these microscopes work?
Bugscope TeamWe have the insects stuck to an aluminum disk that has some carbon tape on it. We then coat the insects with gold-palladium to make the sample conductive, or else we wouldn't get a very good image. We stick them in the microscope and pump it to vacuum and shoot the electron beam at them. The electrons will hit the insects and secondary electrons bounce off and are collected by the secondary electron detector, where it reads the signal and gives us a 3-d image.
- Studentdo they attcak flys
- Studentdo they eat meat
- 9:34 am
- Bugscope Teamnow you can see that we are right in between the cricket and another insect
- Bugscope Teamthe background that is kind of bubbly is the carbon tape
- Studentwow thats a mouth full
- Bugscope Teamsee the claws?
- Studentwhat are the spikes on it's arms?
Bugscope Teamthose spikes are hairs, called setae (see-tee), and they are like cat whiskers in that they help the insect feel its environment
- Studentwhat is a electron beam
Bugscope Teamthe electron beam is a stream of electrons
- Studentcute
- StudentDO THE BUGS HAVE EGGS WHEN YOU BRING THEM INTO THE LABRATORY
- Studentwhat kind of bud is it
- Studentwhat is that hole
Bugscope Teamthis was stuck in a display case with a pin before i "harvested" it

- Studentwhat is that hole?
- StudentWhat is that hole?
Bugscope Teamthat is a pin hole, used to pin the bug down onto a specimen tray
- Studentit looks fat
Bugscope Teamthey look wide and flat when you see them
- Bugscope Teama stream of electric particles
- Studentis it hard to spot a stinkbug
Bugscope Teamno they move fairly slowly, and they are shaped like badges, or shields
- Studentdoes it make a noise?
- Studentlike a buttrfly
- Studentwhere can it be found?
- Studentdo stink bugs realy stink?:_
Bugscope Teamthey produce droplets of bad smelling liquid that other insects don't like. even the stinkbugs don't like the way they smell
- Studentwhat is the line down its body
Bugscope Teamthat is the proboscis
- Studentthey took mine
- StudentIs this all defrent bugs?:o
- Studentyes
- Studentwhat does it eat
- Studentare those round things on the side of its head eyes?
Bugscope Teamyep, totally! those are compound eyes
- StudentDO YOU STUDY THE BUGS FOR MORE THEN ONE DAY?
Bugscope Teamwe can if we want, if we put them back into a desiccator to keep them dry in between imaging
- StudentCan bugs see good when their eyes are bubbled out like the stink bugs is?
Bugscope Teamwell, flying insects have the best vision, they need it because when they fly around they need to not bump into stuff
- StudentWhere are they mostly found?
- Studentcan we see the nxet one
- Studentwierd.
- 9:39 am
- Studentwierd
- Studentwhat is a proboscis ?
Bugscope Teamit is a type of mouth that only is used for drinking liquid
- Studentcool
- Studentwere are they found
- Studentwhat dose compound eyes meen?
Bugscope Teamcompound eyes are eyes that have multiple facets -- multiple tiny lenses called ommatidia
- Studentcan thay fly??
Bugscope Teamyes they do have wings
- Studentwhere are they found?
- Studentare there carnivores
- Studentwhat is that long thing in the head

Bugscope Teamthey are usually green or yellow
- Studentcan we see the bumblebee stinger
Bugscope Teamyes you can ask Mrs B to click on the preset to drive the microscope to that area
- Studentdoe ha v any in captivity thats alive
- Studentwhere do you find these bugs?
- StudentHow big can stink bugs get?
Bugscope Teamthey get to be about the size of your thumbnail in this part of the world, and they are kind of flat
- Studentis it flat?
- Student.
- Studentwhat is that?
- Studentawsome
- Studentthis is a coolyo picture
- Bugscope Teamyou can see now how this stinger has two parts that can work to cut into your skin
- StudentWhat are those strings?
- Student Is that hair>
Bugscope Teamyes bumblebees are VERY hairy. Their hairs are used to catch pollen
- Studentare they stink bugs do they stink?
- Studentthats a stinger
- Studentdoes it hurt when it stings you
Bugscope Teamwell, it can hurt a little bit, some people are allergic, and then go into shock, so if you have the allergy, then yes it can hurt a lot
- Studentis the stinger broken
Bugscope Teamit's not broken -- it has two cutting halves. not all stingers are like that
- Studentare bumble bee stingers as dull as it looks?
- Bugscope Teamthey are sharp like steak knives
- Studentnow it looks yuck!!!!!!!
- Studentis it sharp?
- Studentis the stinger separated?
- Studentyuck!!
- Studentcouled it inject parisites
Bugscope Teamno but parasitic wasps will inject their eggs into other insects, like caterpillars, or insect eggs
- Studentwhat do they eat???
Bugscope Teamthey eat nectar
- Studentawesome
- StudentIs this stinger before or after it stung someone?
Bugscope Teamit probably didn't sting anyone, but it could sting repeatedly
- Studentis that pointy like a pencil
- Studentdo bumble bees sting alot?:.
- Studenthow do they die when they sting you?
Bugscope Teamhoneybees are the bees that die when they sting. That is because they have a barbed stinger that is meant to stay stuck as they pull away. When they do pull away, a muscle comes out as well, which is why they die. The muscle will keep pumping with the stinger attached, and the pumping action drives the stinger deeper and also releases as much poison as possible
- Studenthow long can they grow
- Studentwhy are the stigers seperated
- Studentwill the regula size bee be the same size?
- Studentwhere is the head?
Bugscope Teamthe head is far north of where we are looking now
- Studentif they have posin where is it?
Bugscope Teamthe poison is inside, in a gland that goes to the stinger
- 9:44 am
- Studentto me it looks like it has 2 stingers
- Studentowweyy!
- Studentdid it move?
- Studentdo they die after they sting?
Bugscope Teamno bumblebees will live on to sting again; honeybees die though
- Studentis it a honey bee?
- Studenthow old is it
Bugscope Teamit is probably 2 months old, kind of old for a bumblebee
- Studenti thought they sting you once and die
- Studentis the stinger broken:(
Bugscope Teamit's not broken; it has two cutting halves to get in and out of your skin more efficiently
- Studentcan you opne it
- Bugscope Teamwe are heading for the head
- Bugscope Teamcool
- StudentIs the stinger hairy and is the stinger the only part on a bee that is not hairy?
- Studentthe stinger looks it is broken is it?
- Studenti like this
- Studentcoolieo
- Studenthow old do they have to be before they die
Bugscope TeamI think they just live a few months

- Studentoh
- Bugscope Teamdo you want to see what the inside of the microscope looks like?
- Studentyeah
- Studentdo they jump?
- Studentwere does this bug live dude
Bugscope Teamwe don't know too much about mites. We notice them on insects that can't clean themselves very well, like big beetles. We've also noticed that they tend to die with their host.

- Bugscope Teamthis is the inside of the scanning electron microscope we are using today
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope Teamit's where the samples are
- Studentwat is that?
- StudentCOOL
- Studentty
- Studentwhat is that
- StudentWHAT IS THIS RIHGT HERE
Bugscope Teamin the middle are the insects
- Bugscope Teamthey sit in the microscope in a vacuum and the cone shaped object near the top is where the electrons come out
- Studentwow
- Studentwow what is over their ?
- 10:31 am
- StudentCCCCCCCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
- Bugscope Teamthe cone to the top is where the electrons come down the column and hit the samples
- Studentthe inside of a microscope
- Studentcoooooooooooollllllll
- Studentis scot there
- StudentI WONDER how it moves
Bugscope Teamthere are little motors that move the stage around, which is what the aluminum disk with the insects are located
- Studentscot is this a microscope
- Studentwhat are the samples?
- Studentare those things on the table?worms!
Bugscope Teamthose were the samples -- the bee, the stinkbug, the fruit fly, spider, damselfly, mantis fly

- Studenthow much blood can a flea consum
- Studentor a tick/dust mite
- Studentare these bug are posin
- Studentcan we look at the cube thing?
- Studentcate how do people get samples
Bugscope Teamsometimes school will send in insects to us. They are easily collected by looking under rocks or in rotting wood. The best way to kill them is to freeze them because they just go to sleep. Other ways to get samples is to use specific insect traps, but I don;t know too much about those
- Studentis this a flea egg
- TeacherI am here... having technical issues. You guys are running the scope, right?
Bugscope Teamyes but can we help youj?
- Studentis that a beetle
- Bugscope Teamthis is a actual flee
- Studentthxs
- Studentis this a butterfly or wat?
- Studentwhat is this bug and what dose it eat?

Bugscope Teamit is a mite
- Studenthow small is it
- Studentwhat do mites do scot
Bugscope Teamit depends. some of them eat scraps of food that stick to the insect they're on. some will eat the insect when it dies
- Studentis this a spider

- Studentwhat is a mite
- Studentalex what do mites do?
Bugscope Teammites are bugs that live off of other bugs, they are parasites
- Studenthey scot do can you tell what that is
- Studentthat so cool alex
- Studentwhere are the eyes?
Bugscope Teamnot all mites have eyes. I dont think this one has them either
- Studentcan it move and jump
- Studentdoes it bite Scot.
Bugscope Teamit would be way too small to bite you or me, and it might not have the right kind of mouthparts
- Studentwhat are mites atracted to ?

- Studentwhat are the little things on the sides Cate.
- Studenthow do they get so close to it and take a pic
- Studentdo stinkbugs rilly stink?
- Studenti bet it probaly really does stink
Bugscope Teamyes they really stink, and they are said not to like the way they smell either
- Studentwhy is the mouth so long and white?
Bugscope Teamwe are seeing the top part of the mouth. the tip of the proboscis -- the piercing mouthparts -- is to the south
- Studentis it born from a egg???/
- Studentwhat is that bug called anyways?
- Studentdoes it stink when you kill it
Bugscope Teamif you touch it, it will emit some ooze that stinks
- Studentcate how often do you use buig samples
Bugscope Teamwe only use them once and then throw them out usually. After a while, the insects start to rot or get dusty/dirty
- Bugscope Teamalthough in Vietnam, they eat stink bugs as a delicacy!
- Studentare those eyes on the side of it's head
Bugscope Teamyes the round golf-ball shaped things are the eyes
Bugscope Teamtotally, compound eyes
- Studentwow it looks so coool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\
- Studentim not tlking BOUT THE EYES
- Studenthow does it realese it's smell
Bugscope Teamit can smell using some of the tiny setae that look like hairs to us
- Studentor do tythey have to realease some gas or venum top smell bad>?
- Studentwhat kind of stinkbug is it Cate
- Studentwhat is a mite
Bugscope Teamsome, but not all, of mites are parasites that live on other insects, feeding on them, kinda like mosquitos do to humans
- Studentcool
- Student!!!!
- Studenthow long will it live for
- StudentI know these things are small. How small?
- Studentlook at the thing on its neck what is that???/?/
- Studentare those eyes on the side of it's head
Bugscope Teamtotally, compound eyes
- Studentwhat are does two big things on the side of it ears scot
- Studentcate wat dose this bug eat?
Bugscope Teamstink bugs are omnivorous. They eat plants and other insects
- StudentHOW MANY EYE DOES IT HAVE?\
- Studentwhat do they eat Scot.
- Studentwhats that
- Studentwill it die if it realese the smell
Bugscope Teamno it can live to stink again
- Bugscope Teamoh sorry you said 'how does it release its smell?' it squeezes a droplet of liquid from its abdomen, and that smells
- Studentis that a monkey
- Student?
- Studentwhat is that bug?
- Studentcate how long can bug see
Bugscope Teamnot sure how far it can see. It has to have some good sight though because it flies around.
- Studentholy guackomoly!!!! thats a claw? or a face??? woah
Bugscope TeamHa! it is a claw
- Studentis tht posin
- 10:41 am
- Studentwhat is this scot
Bugscope Teamthis is one of the claws on a strangelooking fly we have in the 'scope today
- Studentwhat all those things pointing out????
Bugscope Teamwell, insects have lots of those hair looking things, they are called setae (see-tee), and they help the insect feel its enviornment
- Studentcool man
- Studentwere can you find these's fly claw kate
- Studentis that thing real?????????/!!!!!!!!!
- Studentwhat kind of bug is this??
Bugscope Teamit's a fly with a long head -- sort of a weevil-like head
- Studentdoes this fly claw carry diseas
- Studentcate why dose this bug look like a person
- StudentIt seems to have hair. why do flies have hair?
- Studentdo flis have teeth
Bugscope Teamno they don't have teeth: some have sucking mouthparts, some piercing, and some cutting or slashing
- Studentwhat does that bug eat?
- Studentwhat is that bug doing
Bugscope Teamwell, it's dead, inside the scope now
- Studentwhat animals claw is it?
Bugscope Teamthis is from a fly
- StudentWere do you get the bugs samples Mrs.B?
- Studentdude what is it what type of claw is it
- Studentwhy do flys have hair
Bugscope Teamthey are needed to help it feel what is around it. They have hard exoskeletons, which is like wearing a suit of armor, and in order to feel stuff, it needs those hairs, which are connected to nerves underneath. So it can feel, sense heat, taste/smell
- Studentlol
- Student is that thing getting eaten? ?
- Studentit's a weird looking fly claw i'm sure----
Bugscope Teamall of the parts of the claw make it look like a spider claw
- Studentwhat would this bug do
- Studentlol no
- Studentno its already dead chris... lol
- Studentare the claws sharp and if they are could they draw blood?
Bugscope Teamwell, not from a human, but from other small insects, yes, the claw can be an offensive weapon
- StudentWHERE DO YOU GET THE BUGS SAMPLES FROM SCOT!
Bugscope Teamthey come from collections, and people send them to us, and we find them outside or in our own houses
- Studentlol
- Studentis it possible for the claw to fall off
Bugscope Teamthe claw could fall off but it is pretty well attached
- Studentcate is this a worm
- Studentproblt
- Student... probly i mean
- Studentyep
- Studentno
- Studentis that mouth looking part where the fly drops eggs?
- Studentno it's not a snake
- Studentis it hanging off of somthing?
- Studentwhat is that dot on his forhead
Bugscope Teamthis is a claw, not a head
- Studentare these bugs dead
Bugscope Teamyes they are all dead
- Studentlol yep i think
- Studenthow long can a bog stay alive for after the bug sampel is taken
Bugscope Teamwell, we've seen some bugs survive being inside the scope, but that is very rare. usually we freeze the insects well before they go into the scope, that kills them in the most humane way possible
- Studentbut i think it is getting eaten is it?
- Studentwhy is this bug so tiny?
- Bugscope Teamlet'
- Studentlol well it looks like a mole if u look upclose
- Studentlet'?
- Studentno its not chris
- StudentCATE DO BUGS HAVE TEETH
Bugscope Teamno but sometimes when they bite us they feel like they do! They usually have a pair of jaws that open side-to-side, instead of how ours open- up and down, which they use to bite things
- Studenttht is a lot of salt
- Studentwhat does this bug eat Scot.
Bugscope TeamMarlesha we were not sure what that bug was. It looked like a weevil-headed fly.
- Studentwow were dose that salt come from
- Student?

Bugscope Teamthis is salt from wendy's restaurant
- Studentlol xochitl
- Studentwhere did you get this picture?????Scot
Bugscope Teamthese are images in live time, in real time, from the scanning electron microscope
- Bugscope Teamsalt is VERY VERY important for the human body. thing is humans totally overload on it, and like anything else, it's bad whe you use too much
- StudentIS THAT REALY SALT
- Studentare thows a lot of money?
- Studentalexs wat kind of foods R they on
Bugscope Teamsalt is used on most foods, and a way to enhance the flavor of that food
- Studentwere do u put it in
- Studentwoah i see the one we were just looking at! it looks like some video game or other foosd
- Studentdo u break it up
- Studentit looks like a lot of salt
- Studentis this salt bad for you alex
Bugscope Teamno, only in large amounts is it bad for you. but it is true that most fast food has WAY TOO MUCH SALT

- Studentcan u eat that i would not
- Student!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Student?
- Student.how does it make music
- Bugscope Teamcricket.
- Bugscope Teamsalt is also a preservative, it can make the meat last longer
- Teachercould you explain how the microscope works to our group?
- Bugscope Teamthe microscope is an electron microscope. so the image is gathered by electrons, not light
- Bugscope Team We have the insects stuck to an aluminum disk that has some carbon tape on it.
- Studenthow high can it jump
- Bugscope Teamthe samples we see are inside the vacuum chamber of the scanning electron microscope.
- Bugscope Teamthe electrons are shot at the bugs inside the vacuum chamber, and they hit the bugs and make the metal coating bounce off, and those electrons that bounce off are collected by the... oh cate, just described it fine... cool!
- Studentcool
- Bugscope Teamthe images we see come from the secondary electrons that bounce out of the samples when the electron beam hits them
- Bugscope Teamthe images are black and white because color is a function of light, and since we are using electrons, not light, to get the image, we don't have color
- Studentawesome that is a good description cate thanks!!!
- Studenthow many body parts does it have
Bugscope Teamoh, lots, a head, abdomen, tarse (legs, arms), antenna, eyes, etc.
- 10:52 am
- Studentdid you cut the cricket head off or is it still on the body and you are not showing it Scot????
Bugscope Teamthe rest of the body is to the south if you want to drive down to see it
- Bugscope Teamit has a head, a thorax, an abdomen, six legs, two antennae, two eyes
- Studenthow big are they?
- StudentDid ants get to the cricet by the time you find it?

- Studentwhat happened?
- Studentholy cow!
- Studentdang

- Student nice ian
- Studentlike a lot
- Bugscope Teamlook at the scalebar on the bottom left of the image, and from that you can tell how big the cricket is
- Studentwhat type of cricket is this scot
Bugscope TeamI'm sorry I don't know what kind it is.
- Studenthow much can a cricket eat in day

- Studentmantis
- Studentoh
- Studentare those legs or hand cate?
Bugscope Teamthey are legs. All insect legs have claws at the end of them
- Studenthow do mantis use their claws
Bugscope Teamthey use their forelimbs to grasp their prey, which is held tight in the spines as the forelimbs close
- Studentlol mrs.b
- StudentIS the microscope able to detect germs
- Studenthow long can it live?????????????????????????????????????????????????????/
- Bugscope Teamlaptops are kinda funky, true
- Studenthow big can a cricket grow to be
- Studentlol lol
- Studentwat
- Studentare those bumpy things eggs?
Bugscope Teamthe bumpy things are carbon tape covered with silver paint that we used to hold the sample down and complete the conductive pathway.
- Studentwhat kind of guts dose it have is it slimy hard or pretcted by skin
Bugscope Teaminsects do have guts, yes, the guts are inside the exoskeleton, which is a very hard shell. insects don't have bones like humans, so they need the hard exoskeleton to keep their shape and guts inside their bodies
- Studenthow long can they live?????????? how long?
- Studentdo they live for a long time???????/
- Studentdo crickets have fingers and toes?
Bugscope Teamno they dont, they just have claws which are used to grab onto things like food
