- Bugscope Teammorning mrs. h, welcome to bugscope!
- Bugscope Teamhello mrs. h, welcome to bugscope!
- TeacherHello there
- TeacherIs anyone there?
- Bugscope Teamyes, we are here, can you see our chat?
- Bugscope Teamyeah Scot, Alex, and I are here to help you out and answer any questions you might have
- Bugscope Teamhello!]
- Bugscope Teammrs. h, let us know if you can see our chat, otherwise i'll give you call, maybe your screen resolution is too low?
- Bugscope Teami'm calling right now
- Bugscope TeamGood morning!
- Bugscope TeamWelcome to Bugscope!
- StudentHi - it's mrs.horn checking another computer - my computer won't show the dialog
- Bugscope TeamYay!
- 8:56 am
- Bugscope TeamAlex can tell you how to change your screen res. on the other computer.
- Studentsounds good
- Bugscope Teammrs. h, your screen resolution on the other computer might not be at the minimum: 1024x768. make sure it's at that, or hit F11 for full screen mode
- Bugscope Teamit's all good, mrs. h can see the chat again
- Bugscope Teamnice and this lovely view of the biofilm
- Bugscope TeamI'm gonna change to the weeeevil head
- Bugscope TeamMrs H you can drive, of course, but I wanted to put a better starting point on the screen.
- 9:02 am
- Bugscope Teamkids are coming soon, she's setting up until then
- Studenthello everyone!!
- Studenthi
- Bugscope TeamHello!
- Bugscope TeamWelcome to Bugscope!
- Bugscope Teamhi students, welcome to bugscope!

- Bugscope Teamthis is a weevil head
- Studenthi scoot i,m david
- StudentWhat is a weevil?
- Studentcool
- StudentWHO is kate?/
- Bugscope TeamHi DaViD!
- Studentscot
- Studentwhat are we looking at?
- Studenthi
- 9:07 am
- Studenthi scot and cate
- StudentOH
- Bugscope TeamCate is a microscopist -- an electron micrioscopist -- who is part of the Bugscope project.
- Studenthi alex no one has talked to you so hi! :)
- Studentcool
- Studentsweet
- StudentCool
- Studentawsome
- Studentis this a bug
- Bugscope TeamAlex will appreciate that.
- Studenthi
- Studentwow
- Studenthi
- Studentwhat is the pic. of?
- Studentwhat is a weevil?
- Teacherbugscope folks, could you give a little explanation
- Studentcrazy kool
- Studentwhere is alex??
- Bugscope Teama weevil is a type of beetle that is knowto have a long snout
- Student?? ....
- Bugscope TeamWeevils are insects, sometimes called snout beetles, that eat rice and grain, among other plant parts
- Bugscope TeamAlex will be right back...
- Studentis that all they eat?
- StudentIs this the head
- StudentWhere is the head
Bugscope Teamwhat you see is the head-- the long snout with the antennae, and the round base near the bottom of the screen
- Bugscope Teamweevils are known to damage crops
- Studentwhere are they commonly found?
- Studentcan they har, people?
Bugscope Teamno they won't hurt you
- StudentHow big are they
- Teacherwas this one of the insects we sent in?
- Studentdo they eat anything else???
- 9:12 am
- Studentwhat iss a microscopists
Bugscope Teama microscopist is a person who studies or uses microscopes
- Bugscope Teamthey are small, relatively, and they infest cotton as well -- they are found all over in the temperate climates
- Studentwhat does it do to protect them selfs
- Studentwhat color are they??
- Bugscope Teamthey are a variety of colors
- Studenthow big do they get
Bugscope Teamthey can be anywhere from 4 mm to more than a cm long
- Bugscope Teamthis one was brown
- Studentwhat color can they be
- Bugscope Teammany kinds of weevils play dead when they are disturbed
- Studentdid we send in this insect?
Bugscope Teamthe dragonfly and the tick are from you, the others we put in there ourselves
- Studentdo they come in other colors?
- Studenthow do they protect themselves
- Studenthow do they protect themselfs
Bugscope Teamplaying dead when they are disturbed is probably their defense mechanism
- Studentdo they run fast?
Bugscope TeamThey are pretty slow, generally.
- Studentcan they fly?
- Studentdoes it go through incomplete or complete metamorphasis?????
- Teachercan we go to preset #3 please?
- Bugscope Teamgo ahead and click on it mrs. h? is it working?
- Bugscope Teamyou should be able to click on any preset and it'll take you there
- Teacheroops, I forgot that I can do that
- Bugscope Teamah, no problem, glad it's working now
- Bugscope Teamthere we go...
- Studenteww
- Bugscope Teamand you can also control other things too, magnification, navigation, etc
- Studentwhat is on it?
- Studentwhat is that
- Bugscope Teamwe are looking at fungal hyphae on the the eye of the dragonfly
- Studentwhat is the thing in the middle?
- Bugscope Teamthis is cool, this is a compound eye on a dragonfly
- Studentwhy does fungus grow on an eye
- Studenthow many compound eyes do they have
- Studentwhat is on it
- Studentwhat does the fungas do to the eye
- Studentwhat is the little string thing?
- Bugscope Teamthe head is very big so it is hard to see the entire head in the window
- Teacherthe preset has changed on the students computers but not mine - any suggestions?
Bugscope Teamtry hitting refresh if the image isn't updating (F5)
- Studentwhat type of fungus is that???
- Studenthow long is the fungus on the eye
- StudentDoes it clean off the fungus eventually?
- Studenthow does it get fungus on its eyes
- Studentare they always hexagons
Bugscope Teamthey aren't always hexagons, mosquitos and moths for instance have more round facets. Hexagons are a good shape to fit the curvature of the eye
- Bugscope Teamto refresh your screen, use F5
- Teachergot it - thanks
- Studentwhat is fungal hyphae?
- Bugscope Teamthe fungus may not show up until the insect/arthropod has died
- Studentdo most dragon flies have fungus on there eye?
- Studentcool
- 9:18 am
- Studentwhat is fungal hyphae
- Studentwhat is the stick thing
- Studentthe insect is still alive?
Bugscope Teamthey are all dead before we put them in the microscope (we hope!). We can't put live insects in the chamber of the microscope
- Studenthow does the fugas get there
- Studentwas this all over there eyes?
- StudentDoes it clean off the fungus?
- StudentWhat is that long Stick thing?
- Studentwh ydoes it have fungus on its eyes
- Studentoh why
- Bugscope Teamwe need the things inside the scope to be absolutely still, thus we kinda need them to be not alive, aka dead
- Studentdoes the fungas hurt them
Bugscope Teamthe fungus only gets on them after they are dead, so no it doesnt hurt them :)
- Studentwhat color is the of the string thing on its eye
- Bugscope Teamfungus has tiny spores, about the same size as pollen, sometimes, that float through the air and settle on everything. in the right conditions the fungus will flourish
- Bugscope Teamthe reason you want things very still is the scope magnifies at a very high mag, and if things move inside the scope that movement would be highly amplified and the image would look very bad, blurry and probably unrecognizable
- Studenthow does the fungus get on the eye???
Bugscope Teamfungus helps decompose matter, so it got on there sometime after it died. Usually if the insect is in a slightly wet area there is going to be more fungus
- StudentIs the fungas harmful?
- Bugscope TeamMrs H take the mag down if you would like to see more of the dragonfly eye
- Bugscope Teamcool!
- Studentis it al over the eye
- Bugscope Teamyou can see that the compound eye of the dragonfly is very large and has thousands of ommatidia
- Studentwhat is the hair stuff?
Bugscope Teamthe hairlike things we see are called 'setae'
- Bugscope Teamommatidia are the facets of the eye
- Studenthow many eye things do they HAVE?????
Bugscope Teamthey have 2 compound eyes, and sometimes on insects you can see a small set of three bumps which are also eyes called ocelli
- Studentsweet DUDE
- Studentewwwww
- Studentwhat is the hair
Bugscope Teamthose hairs are called setae (see-tee), they help all insects to sense their environment, all insects have LOTS of setae
- Studentso the fungus is all over the eye
- Studentwhy is there hair onit
- Studentwhat is the rock thing
Bugscope TeamChris and Alec that is a rock, probably -- a small one
- Studentwhat is that rock like thing on its eye???
- Studentis the fungus on the whole eye or just a little bit?
- Studentwhat are the bubbly things in the backround
- Studentwhat is the hair
- Studentcool! :)
- StudentHow many eye hexagon things Do they HAVE???
Bugscope Teamtoo many to count! Thounsands i would guess
- Studentwhat is the rock?
- 9:23 am
- Studentway cool
- Studentwhy do they need hair on there eyes
- Studentoh ok
- Studentwhy is there a rock on it?
Bugscope Teamwell, things happen, it's not a perfect world, bugs fly into dirt and stuff, they get dirty
- Bugscope Teamto the left is the front of the face
- StudentWhat is the long string on the right?
- Studenthow did the rock get there
- Studentwhat is the bubbly things in the backround
Bugscope Teamthat's the carbon sticky tape that we stick the bugs to in the microscope, it helps to keep them stable
- Studentwow
- Studentwhat has the hair on it
- Studentccccoooooooooooooooooooolllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Studentsweet
- Studentwhat is the sticky tape for
- Studentso the whole bug is on the tape stuff?
Bugscope Teamyep
- StudentWhat are the string things???
- Bugscope Teamthis is called the 'frons,' the front of the face
- Studentwhats that rinkle?
- StudentIs the fungas harmful???
Bugscope Teamthe fungus isn't to harmful to us. It is too small a quantity. I just wouldn't recommend eating the insect that has it :p
- Studentcoolieo
- Studentwhat are frons?
- StudentWhy is the face so hill-like?
- Studentthere are indents in the blob
- StudentEWWWWWW
- Studentwhat are the string things?
- Studentewwwww
- Studentawsome!11 CCCCCOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!!
- Studentwhat are the STRINGS?/
- Studentnasty
- Bugscope Teamthose indents were where some of the setae were coming out of
- Studentis that the brain??
- Studentwhy are there hairs in its mouth
- Studentewwwwwwww
- Studentare those the teeth?
- Studentis that the tounge
- StudentAre those Teeth????
- Studentwhat is the thing in the center of the mouth?
- Studentyuck!!!!
- StudentTeeTH???
- Studentewwwwwwwwwwwwww
- Studentwhat is the fuzzy stuff
- Studentwhat are the triangles
- Studentdiscusting
- Studentwhat are the mountain looking things
- StudentIs that hair or what
- StudentWhat is that?
- Studentthis is the koolest thing ive ever seen how about you?
- Studentwhat are those leaf like things on the "tounge"
- Studentwhat is all of that fur on its face
- 9:28 am
- Studentwhat are all of the string things???
- StudentAre those TEETH??
- Studentis that the tounge?
- Student does it have scales
- Studentwhat are the barb like things
- Studentare those organs?
- Studentwhat are the triangles
- Bugscope Teamthis is the part of the tick that sticks into your skin
- Studentew
- Studenti remember getting one of those on my leg. How big can they get by sucking blood?
- Teacherwe are all grossing out right now
- Studentdoes it have a tounge
- Studenthow many teeth does it have?
- Bugscope Teamthe part with the triangles on it is called the hypostome, and it has those recurved spines that keep it from coming out of your skin easily
- Studentgross
- StudentWhat is the hair?
- Studenti think cause their bite is sosmall, we cant feel it
- Bugscope Teamthe parts at the top are the chelicerae, which help cut into your skin and make the blood flow
- Studenti've had a tick in my head before
- Bugscope Teammost of the hairlike things we see here are also fungus
- Studentew
- Studenthow many teeth do they have?
- Studentwhat kind of fungus
- Studentwhy is their mouthe in a heart shape
- Studentis this inside of a tick?
- Studentdo they eat animals to
Bugscope Teamthey will feed on anything warmblooded for the most part like your pets
- Studentis that their head
- Bugscope Teamticks often do not have saliva that makes you itch -- as Alex says it is better for them to bite you stealthily.
- Studentso the fungus still cannot harm you even if the tick is in their skin?????
Bugscope Teamthe fungus you could easily breathe as well but if you are healthy it will not harm you. what is bad about ticks is that they can bite (some of them) repeatedly, and have different hosts. So they can transfer bacteria from one host to another.
- Studentwow
- Studentis all they eat is blood
- StudentCAN they Kill You?
- Studentewwww
- Studenti had a tick in my arm leg andthe other arm at the same time
- Studentis all they eat blood
- Studenthow small is the tick? is it microscopic?
Bugscope TeamDanielle this tick started off small -- a few mm in length. Now it is full of blood and much larger, nearly a cm long.
- Studentwhat did we send in 4 bugs
- StudentDo they suck out all types of blood?
- Studentwow it looks like a small elephant trunk
- Studentis that the whole body
Bugscope Teamthe body is really big! if we zoomed out a little we could see it is really big and really round
- Studenthehe. =]
- Studentthat is so wierd!!!!
- Studenty is the mouth in a trianle shape
- Studentis the mouth popping out
- Studento ok
- Studentdo they only blood
- Student?
- Studentwhy is the mouth shaped like that
- 9:33 am
- StudentDo they ONly drink BLOOD???????
Bugscope TeamYes they drink only blood.
- Studentdo they only eat blood
- Studentdo they only eat blood
- StudentHow many people died from ticks.
- Bugscope Teamblood is their main food, yes
- Studentdo they only eat blood
- Studentwhat are those holes
Bugscope Teamthe things that look like holes are places where there are gaps in the mat of fungus
- StudentWhy do you have to burn tics to kill them?
Bugscope TeamTaylor it is best to gently pull the tick out, carefully, with forceps, so you don't break off the capitulum, which is the part we were looking at.
- Studentwhat do they eat
- Studenteww
- Studentis that the eye ball
- Studentit looks like it has clay on it
- Studentwhy does it only have one eye?
- Studentwhat is the little eye looking thing
- Studentwhat are those roundish things
- Studentis that an eye??????
- Studentwhere did his other eye go?
- Studentwhere is the other eye?
- StudentIs that An antennae?????
- Bugscope Teamit has two eyes
- Studentwhy does it only have one eye
- Bugscope Teamthat eye looking thing on the upper right is an antenna socket with a broken off antenna
- Studentis that teeth
- Studenthow many sections are on its antennae
- StudentWhat is That Long thing??/
Bugscope Teamthat was the unbroken antenna
- StudentA Nose?
- Studentwhat r the little irregular shapes on it
- Studentsick
- Bugscope TeamA lot of flying insects have two compound eyes and three simple eyes, called ocelli.
- Studentwhat is the hair stuff on the top?
- Studentwhere is the mouth?
Bugscope Teamright now we can't see the mouth too well, it is at the bottom of the screen
- Studentwhat are those things by the mouth
- Studenthow many sections are on the antennae
- Studentis that a broken antanae?
Bugscope TeamKamilla to the right we are looking at the base of an antenna, yes.
- Studentwhat are the plate like things on its mouth?
Bugscope Teamit has a hinged jaw (it swings out like a gate)
- StudentYes
- Bugscope Teamyep, that's a broken antenna socket
- StudentWhat is that hairy substance?
Bugscope TeamThe 'hairs' are various 'setae,' pronounced 'see-tee.' They are often sensory: chemosensory, mechanosensory, thermosensory...
Bugscope Teamah, hi sam, sorry we didn't get to you sooner. those hairs are almost always setae (see-tee). they are kinda like cat whiskers in that they help the insect to sense its environment. they stick through the exoskeleton to nerves underneath
- Bugscope Teamand see the compound eye to the right of the socket?
- Bugscope Teamthe eye is the dome to the far right, as Alex says.
- Studentwhat r the irregular shapes
- Studentwhat is the hairy substance
- StudentWhat is The hair??
- Studentis that hair on the top of its head
- TeacherWould you please answer Sam Z's question?
- Studentin the right hand corner is one of the compound eyes?????
- Studentwhat is the hair
- Studentwhat is the stuff under the eye??
Bugscope Teamunder the broken antenna there is some stuff that looks like dirt or some other type of debris
- StudentWhy do they sometimes puke on your hand like one did to me?
Bugscope TeamThe puking is a defensive technique--they figure that whatever is handling it (in your case, you) will be so disgusted at the puking that you will let him go.
- Studentwhat is the fuzzy stuff
- 9:38 am
- Studentit looks like a garbage bag
- Bugscope Teamhim or her
- Studentewwwww
- Studentcoooooooooooooool
- Studentwell im not usually disgusted at that
- Bugscope Teamyou will find that insects are a lot hairier than they seem, and that almost all insects will have them
- Studentwhat's that gap underneath the eye
- Studentare those hairs?
- Studentisther hairs in the antena the broke n1
- Studentis that a hole in the eye
- Studentccccccccccccoooooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!
- StudentWhat are those crumbly things underneath the eye?
Bugscope Teamthose are just pieces of debris like dirt or pieces that broke off from the antenna
- Studentwhy was the antenna broken off
Bugscope Teamwell, things dry out, and they get knocked around, and things break
- Studentmore fungus i think
- Bugscope TeamTroy that is the base of an antenna that has broken off, so we are looking into the core of the base of the antenna.
- StudentAre those hairs in the antena hole?
Bugscope Teamthere shouldnt be any hair inside the antenna, but there are a lot outside of it
- Studenthow does the anntenne hold to the eye
Bugscope Teamthe antenna is adjacent to the eye, and it is attached to the head via a ball and socket joint, like a human femur and pelvis
- Studentwhat is in the socket?
- Studentwhat is in the inside of the whole?
- Teacherour first class is leaving and we'll be back with class #2 in a minute
- StudentWHAT is in The Eye?
- Studentthank you
- Studentbye
- StudentTHANKS
- Studentpeace out
- Studentbye
- Studentbey
- Bugscope TeamFYI: if you check out the "your questions" section at the bottom left corner of your screen sometimes you can find answers to questions that we have already answered. Occasionally the chat going so quickly that you can miss some of the answers or two :)

- Studenthello patrons
- Studentlol it look weird
- Bugscope TeamHi Ben!
- Studenthey scot
- Bugscope Teamthis is the base of an antenna that broke off
- Bugscope Teamhello students!
- StudentI have just traveled from the north to explore this unknown region of up close bugs
- Bugscope TeamHi Max!
- Studentr u the person at the acadamy or something
- Teacherwe're back

- StudentHey Jacob
- Bugscope Teamthis is the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, at the University of Illinois.
- Studenthey
- Studentweird bug
- Studentalex do you like your job
Bugscope Teamyes, very much
- StudentYUK!!!!
- Studentwhoa
- Studentthat's is so weird looking
- Studentkewl
- Studentthats cool
- Studentnice
- StudentYou know it!!!
- Studentits weird looking
- Bugscope TeamWe have cool jobs, I think, doing this, especially.
- Studentthats cool
- Studentthat's awesome
- Studentoh yeah
- Studentscot is this your favorite thing to do?
- Studentwhat is your favorite part of your job
- Studentdoes it take u long to make this pictures
- Studentcan we look at the dragonfly eye
- StudentWhy is ther hairs on it
Bugscope Teamthe hairs you will find on a lot of insects today. Insects are a lot hairier than they seem. The hairs allow the insect to feel what is around thm through their hard exoskeleton
- Studentwow
- Studentis that an eye
- Studentthat's is so discusting
- Studentis your job fun?
- Studentyuk
- Studentalex do you make a lot of money doing your fun job?
- Bugscope TeamMax I like to work on the electron microscopes and help people get good images.
- Studentwhat is this?
- StudentAlex, do you make a lot of money?
- Studentalex what is the favorite part of your job
- Studentwo what is that
- Studentkool
- Studentdo you like the bugs we choose?
Bugscope TeamEric we like the bugs, but the one beetle was too big to put on the stub so Cate chose another one for you.
- Bugscope Teamwe get to see lots of cool research
- Studentwhat is the best part of your job
- StudentWhat is your official title?
Bugscope Teammy official title is: senior systems engineer
- Studentwhy couldnt you put the beetle on
- Studentwhat is it??????
- Studentwhat bug is that???
- Studentthis is baller
- Studentthis is kinda ewwhhyy.
- Studentidk
- Studentgood call kyle
- Studentyes
- Studentthis is so gross
- Studentor something else
- Studentare the mouth pieces still attached?
- Studentso when did you realize you wanted to do this for your job
Bugscope Teamwell, to be honest, i wasn't sure i'd like be a sysadmin, but i took the job anyway. i liked helping people for sure, and so that part of the job i like. but people are complex, and can like many different things.
- Studentits wierd
- Studentsse
- 9:54 am
- Studentquite official
- Studentit looks like a monster
- Studentdo they have segments on the antennas
Bugscope Teamyes the antenna that is coming off to the left has lots of segments
- Studentcool
- StudentWOW!!! that sounds pretty SHNAZZY
- Studenthow many years of college did you have to go through
Bugscope TeamI am still in graduate school...when it is all said and done, when I graduate in the spring it will be 10 years since I graduated high school
- Studentdo you get off on the holidays?
- Studentdoes an entomologist study bugs??
- StudentDo you have business cards?
Bugscope Teamyes we have nice business cards )
- Studentso is this what you do all day
- Studentwhat do you do exactly as a entomologist
Bugscope TeamEntomologists study lots of different aspects of insect biology: behavior, genetics, toxicology, communication, ecology, they describe new species and study how insects affect agriculture and other industries. I study how a group of beetles communicate with each other.
- Studentis entomologist a bug scientist
Bugscope Teamyep!
- Studentare you an optomoligist or anouther kind of scientist?
- StudentDo you work through the whole night
Bugscope Teamsometimes we work nights, but that is rare
- Studentit looks like it has one eye
Bugscope Teamthe thing that looks like an eye is where an antenna broke off. The bigger round object to the right of it is one of its compound eyes
- Studentwhat are the dot things?
- Studentwhat are the segments used for
- Studentthanks
- StudentWhat is an entomologist?
- StudentHow high does you microscope go to?
- Studentdo you enjoy your job
- Studenttick mouth
- Bugscope Teamentomology is the scientific study of insects
- Studenthow long have you been doing your job?
- Studentso where do you work in like a lab??
- StudentHow many years did you have to go to college to get your degree?
- Studentits hairy
Bugscope Teamthe hair here is fungus
- Studenthairy mouth
- Studenthow long have you been a emtomoligist?
Bugscope TeamI started graduate school in 2003, so I guess that was my official start in entomology
- Bugscope Teamthis is the tick mouth
- StudentWhat are the long strings?
- StudentThats disgusting
- Studentit looks like big juicy lips
- Studentthe tick haed is so gross
Bugscope Teamthe tick in general was kind of gross. It was very engorged with blood, though we havent cut it to look inside. Scot wants to do that later
- Studentis that hair on their mouth???
- Studentis there mouth hary
Bugscope TeamThis doesn't look like hair that belongs to the insect to me...this looks like fungal hyphae
- Studentoh thats weird
- Studentis that its mouth?
- Studentit looks slimey
- Studentdo you get grossed out by some things you look at
- Studentdoes fungus grow on all bugs
- Studentwait how do they get that hair on there mouth or fungus i mean?
Bugscope Teamthe fungus gets there after it dies. You will usually find it more on dead insects that are in a slightly wet environment
- Studentis this a deer tick or another kind?
- Studentare those its teeth?
- StudentWhat kind of tick is this?
- Studentwhat are all the triangle looking things in the middle
Bugscope Teamthose are what helps it bite into you or another mammal. It rubs those up and down to get further into the skin
- StudentCan your microscope see things as small as atoms?
- Studentdo they grow the fungus?
- Studentit looks like there is dry grass inside of it
- Studentit has a tiny head
- Studentdoes it have a toung
Bugscope TeamInsects have a kind of toungue--called the hypopharanyx. It isn't as flexible as our tongue. Insects have sensilla that taste all over their bodies, so their tongue is probably mostly to manipulate food, not to taste it.
- Studenthow strong is your microscope?
Bugscope Teamwell, strong? do you mean how high can it magnify? up to 800,000 times. but for insects we normally look at 40x to 40,000x
- Studentgtg
- Studentthats what i said tim
- StudentKMON
- Studentwhat is the club like thing in the center of the mouth
- StudentI ASKED THAT FIRST
- Studentwhy is it round
- StudentWow thats powerful
- Studentoh wow thats strong
- StudentDoes it have a brain?
- Studentfrom where does it eat?
- Studentya deeper mouth
- 9:59 am
- Studenthave you ever looked at an ear mite
Bugscope Teamwe have looked at mites in general. We find them on earwigs or big beetles mostly
- StudentAll bugs have a brian connor
- Studentit looks like there is leaves on the top
- Studentwhy does it look like a flower
- Studentdo they eat or just suck blood?
Bugscope Teamthe blood is their food
- Studentdo you guys do this all day?
Bugscope Teamwe do this about 3x a week. When we aren't doing this we run a lab for people on campus. Here in the microscopy suite we have around 50 microscopes for people to use. We help those people use them
- StudentWhat are the little pedals?
- Studentdoes the mouth have a tounge that laps your blood
- Studentthe bug looks like it has chapped lips
- Studentso an insect digs in when it bites
Bugscope TeamWell, I responded about insect tongues, but ticks are NOT insects. They are arachnids, related to spiders....
- Studentare its eyes on there?
- Studentit looks like it has stems or sticks on it
- Studentis it sharp?
- Studentdoes their diet only consist of blood of an animal?
- StudentDoes the mouth suck the blood or does it lap it up?
- Studentwhat are the triangle things made of?
Bugscope TeamThey are made of chitin.
- Studentdo those ridges feel like ridges?
- StudentDoes this bug suck blood?
Bugscope Teamyes the tick sucks blood
- Studentdoes it hurt when a tick sucks your bug
Bugscope TeamI have never found them to hurt ( I have found 2 ticks on me in the past). Usually people dont know they have ticks till they find them feeding on them
- Studentwhat are the tringel thnigs on the mouth
- Studentit looks like veins
- Studentdoes it have a rigid body?
Bugscope Teamyes, insects have an exoskeleton, they have that instead of bones. and the exoskeleton is hard, made from the same stuff as your fingernails, chitin
- Studentso when you dont know that a bug bit you and its still there.how long does it stay??
Bugscope TeamUmm..I think a tick will stay attached for a couple of days
- Studentwhat campus?
- Studentdo you look at spider too or just insects
- Studentis it sharp?
- Studentdo you guys teacher kids besides this.
- StudentIt looks like it has scales on it! WHat are they?
- Studentdo you ever get grossed out?
- Studentit has all sorts of bumps on it
- Studentyou should mess with it a little more like show inside of it
- Studenthow many times is this magnified?
Bugscope Teamright now 1436x. You should be able to see the magnification in the upper right hand corner
- Studentokay thanks cae
- Studentcan they kill you?
Bugscope Teamwell, the tick doesn't kill you with its bite, but it could pass on some serious bacteria, and if that isn't properly treated, it could kill you
- Studentdoes the tick just fall off then?
Bugscope TeamIt feeds for around a week or so, then yes they jump off to mate and lay eggs
- Studentdose this animal thing have scales
- StudentWhat is chitin?
Bugscope TeamChitin is a chain or n-acetyl-glucosamine that is beta linked. In English, it is a kind of sugar. Chitin+water+proteins are what makes up arthropod exoskeletons
- Studentwhats chitin
Bugscope Teamit is the same stuff that your fingernails are made of
- Studentwhat is chitin
- Studentwhat is the longest you have studied one bug?
- StudentRight now do we control your microscope?
- Studentis chitin pronounced with and sh sound
Bugscope Teamit sounds like kite-in
- Studentcan you get a disease from it
- Studentwhy does the mouth have a hole in the middle
- Studentdo ticks only suck certan types of blood?.?
Bugscope Teamwhoa, great question! i have no idea, i'll look it up....
- Studentive heard that ticks can explode if they suck too much blood. is that true?
Bugscope TeamI don't think so. There would have to be something seriously wrong with the tick. The inside of the tick's gut has stretch receptors that tell it when it has enough blood.
- 10:04 am
- Studentcool
- Studentwhen do ticks sleep
- Studenthow long do they live
- Studentwhats that hole?
- Studenthow do you get a tick out of your skin?
- StudentHow fast do ticks reproduce?
- StudentWow! that's really complicated! Thanks.
- Studentwhere do you fined this
- StudentHow big can ticks get to?
- Studentif you squeeze it then will it explode
Bugscope TeamTick cuticle is pretty strong. Usually I don't see engorged ticks, so I don't know if they will explode or not. I would say not.
- Bugscope Teamhah--it is my job to know about insect exoskeletons
- Studentwhat are those tube things?
- StudentDo ticks live on every continent?
- Studentso are misquetos like ticks kind of?
Bugscope Teamyes only they dont live on you but they can give you diseases just like ticks
- Studentwhy is there no color?
- Studentwhat happens if a tick get to much blood?
- Studenthas there evr been like a siamese insect like connected
- Studentwhat are the hexagons?
- Studentwhat is the tube thing
- Studentwhat the sqaures thingys
Bugscope Teamwe are on the compound eye of the dragonfly head. Here we see some fungus
- Studentthis also has a stick stuff on it
- Studentdo ticks need are blood to live
Bugscope TeamYes, that is what they eat.
Bugscope TeamAlthough, if a tick doesn't get a blood meal for a long time, it can go into a type of hibernation until a meal comes along
- Studentwhat is that stuff on the eye?
- Studentwhat is the long stringy stuff oi it
- Studentwhat is the line things on the eye
- Bugscope TeamAnd mosquitos are insects and ticks are arachnids
- StudentWhat are the string thing on the eye?
- Studentwhat is the tube?
- Studentoh i knew that
- Studentwhat kind of diseases do ticks give you?
Bugscope Teamlyme disease is a big one but there are others
- StudentWhats the biggest insect that you have looked at?
- Studentwhat is the tube
- StudentCan the fungus carry a disease?
- Studentthe eye looks dusty
- Studentit sorta looks like bones or something
- Studentso does fungus ever grow on a living insect??
- Studentwhat is the tube?
- Studentit looks like a big bone is it
- Studentis that fungus on that eye?
- Studentwhat is the tube?
- StudentThat eye is very dirty
- Studentwhat month do most ticks come out?
Bugscope TeamI would say they are probably AROUND all year, but the biggest time for ticks would be mid-late spring.
- StudentDoes the fungus infect the bug in any way?
- Studenti have heard that tick did into you body and can get into your skin is that true?
Bugscope TeamThey bury their mouthparts in your skin and your skin swells around the tick--so it can look like the tick is buried in your body. But it wouldn't do the tick any good to go inside your body. How would it get out?
- Studenthow rare is getting west nile from a musquito
- Studenthow do Dragonflys get fungus on thier eyes
Bugscope Teamjust like the tick, it showed up when it was dead and it may have been in a moist environment
- Studentwhat is the tube
- Bugscope TeamRocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever are a couple other diseases that you can get from ticks as well
- Studentdo all dead dragonflies get fungus in them
- StudentDo dragonflies bite?
Bugscope Teamyes they do bite, that is how they get their food, which is usually other insects
- Studentwhats your favorite insect
- Studentcan the dragonfly go blind because of the funas
Bugscope Teamit doesnt usually grow on a living insect
- Studentok
- Studentcan fungus grow on the eyes when it is alive?
Bugscope TeamNot usually--the dragonfly would have to be really sick for some other reason to have this kind of fungus growing on it
- Studentwhat else grows on dragonflys
- 10:09 am
- Bugscope Teami think the fungus is mostly growing after the dragonfly died. the insect would wipe off it's eyes if it were alive, i think
- StudentIs there fungus all around the body?
- StudentDo dragonflies carry diseases?
Bugscope Teamnot that I'm aware of
- Studentcan insects go blind
- Studentwhat is the big blob in the corner
- Studentwhat is the big rock?
Bugscope Teamthat is probably what you think it is, a rock.
- Studenthave you ever magnified a walkin stick
Bugscope Teamyes they are ok to look at, i think praying mantids are more fun to look at, their heads look very alien-like
- Studentwhat is the big rock?
- Studentare dragonflies cannables
Bugscope TeamAs nymphs, almost certainly. They probably wouldn't make it a habit, but if they caught another dragonfly and it was smaller than it, it would almost certainly eat it
- Studentlooks like a rock
- StudentWhat are the giant whole next to the rock?
- StudentWhat is the bubble thing?
- Studenthow many little square-ish things are usually a dragonfly eye??
- StudentAre those veins?
Bugscope Teamthe veins are just more fungus
- Studentis that a rock
- Studentis it possible to whipe off the fungus or would that be physicallt impossible
Bugscope Teamwe could probably clean it off with ethanol
- Bugscope TeamDragonflies do not carry any diseases.
- Studenthow did it get there?\
- Studentdose it have cracks on it
- Studentit has roots on it i think or something
- StudentWhat is the tube
- StudentWOW!! Eplain what you mean by alien like?
Bugscope Teamit has very big eyes and a narrow head, it is very cool to see in the microscope filling up the screen I'm sorry we dont have one for you to look at today
- Studentinteresting
- Studentdo insects have enemies
- Studentif you are sick and a tick/ or mosquito sucks your blood do they get your sickness
Bugscope TeamNot necessarily. It depends on if your sickness can be vectored by an insect or a tick. There are some diseases, like malaria, west nile, and other tropical diseases that are insect vectored 100% of the time. But, something like a cold or the flu cannot be vectored by a mosquito or a tick. And the human pathogen usually cannot infect the mosquito--EXCEPT in the case of malaria. Malaria is an incredible disease.
- StudentWhat is in the upper-right corner that looks like a bubble?
Bugscope Teamthat's the carbon sticky tape that we stick the bugs to, it keeps them still
- Studentdo a bugs antennas fall off after it dies
- StudentWHAT IS THE TUBE?
- StudentWOAH!!! SOUNDS AWSOME!!!!!
- StudentHow long do dragonflies live?
- Studenthow dose the dust stick to the eye
- Studentcan all insects bite people if they wanted to
Bugscope Teama lot can, you might not be able to feel it always, you feel a mosquito bite because they inject you with a anticoagulant so your blood flows better for them and that anticoagulant makes the spot feel itchy
- StudentWhat kinds of bugs do you like looking at the most
- StudentAre bugs considered parisites?
- Studentwhat are those bubble things in the back of it?
- Studentwhat are those dots
- Studentwhy does the beetle head look broken down
Bugscope Teami think it started to deteriorate, it might be old
- Studentwhat are thhose circle things on the top
- StudentWhat are the circles
- Studenthow dose a bed bug get into you matress
- Studentwhat are the bubble things
- StudentAre the little circles cells?
- Studentbeetle butt/head
- Studentwhat is in the backround?
- Studentwhat are the circles
- StudentDo beetles carry diseases or bite?
Bugscope Teamthey do bite (have you ever been bitten by a ladybug?) but they dont carry diseases
- StudentWhat are those little dots on the side?
- Studenthow long do beetles live?
- 10:14 am
- Studentwhat are all the circle things in the back
- Studentcan bed bugs hurt you, when they are in your bed?
- Studentwhat are the bubbles
- Studentoh so it started to decay
Bugscope Teamyes i think so, the discoloration shows where it is decaying
- Studentdo beetles live in trees
- Studentdo insects have teeth
- Studentit all looks like bones
- StudentWhat exactly is a bed bug?
- StudentHow fast do beetles reproduce?
- Studentwhat is the most common beetle?
Bugscope TeamThere is not any really way to know that. There are occasional outbreaks of pest species, like Japanese beetles, corn rootworms, etc. etc., but I am not really sure if we have anyway of knowing which is the most common beetle species in the world..
- StudentIs the head broken off?
- Studentokay thanks
- Studentwhat do the bettles eat
Bugscope Teamthat depends on the beetle. Some eat plant life while others eat other insects
- Studenthow long do bugs live?
- Studentdiscoloration? the picture is black and white
Bugscope Teamwell, the scope uses electrons to gather the image, not light. since color is a manifestation of light (frequency), and since the scope isn't using light, there is no color.
- Studenthow do beetles communicate
- StudentDo beetles migrate?
- Studentsince only female mosiquitoscan ite is that the same with a tick??
Bugscope TeamBoth sexes are blood feeders, but only the female becomes greatly distended during engorgement. Since the tick we saw today was engorged, it was a female
- StudentAre they vertebrate?
Bugscope TeamNope, invertebrates. No bones.
- StudentWhat is the basic structure of a beetle?
- Studenthow big are beetles?
- StudentDose it hurt when they bit or can it hurt you?
- StudentDo beetle bite people?
- Studentwhat is the biggest insect/aracnid in the world
- Studenthow do beetles communicate
- Studentok
- Studentinteresting
- Bugscope Teamall electron microscopes use electrons, not light, to gather the image, that's why they are always black and white images
- StudentDo you have colored microscopes?
- Studentit looks like a claw thing on the bottom right
- Studenthow do beetles smell?
Bugscope TeamThey smell with specialized setae on their antennae and other body parts--but mostly their antennae
- Studentwhat are the preitors of the beetle
Bugscope TeamOther insects, spiders, small mammals, birds, lizards and frogs.
- StudentWhat is the biggest bug you've ever looked at?
- Studentdo you look at just insects or do you look at all Arthropods
- Studenthow do beetles communicate
Bugscope TeamThey can communicate by pheromones, which are chemicals that the beetles release into the air which other beetles can detect--like cologne, they can communicate by sound (although that is not so common in beetles, especially over longdistances) and they can communicate by sight.
- Bugscope Teamwith software, however, you can color the image afterwords, and it would be pretty realistic, color based on elemental analysis
- StudentDose it hurt when they bit or can they harm you?
Bugscope Teamsometimes it hurts, ladybugs hurt when they bite
- Studentinteresatin (said in a sinister way)
- StudentWhat is the circle thing?
Bugscope TeamI am not sure what circle you are talking about
- Studentdo beetles deteriorate?
Bugscope TeamYes, when they die they a broken down by fungi and other decomposers.
- StudentWelcome sjinmtng
- Studentwhat is that circular thing
- Studentok thanks
- Studentwhat are the icicles?
- Studentdoes this on ehave fungus too?
- StudentAre all Arthropods able to carry harmful diseases?
Bugscope Teamno only a few do, mostly the blood-suckers
- Studentdo beatles have a family or do they go off by there own
Bugscope TeamSome beetle species do live in groups. Some bark beetles have a nest which is a gallery inside of a tree and they live cooperatively. Dung beetles and carrion beetles often form male-female pairs and they will feed and tend their larvae together. Several generations of bess beetles will live in the same rotten log and they will help to feed and take care of the younger larvae
- Studentis it rigid
- Studentas a swarm of mosquitos ever killed a person
Bugscope Teamif a swarm of mosquitoes were to go after a person, there is a chance there is a disease carrier among the mosquitoes and it could make the man very sick or even kill him if he doesnt get help, so it is a possibility i suppose
- Studentit has web on it or sticky stuff
- Studentwhat are all the things that look like sticks and rocks
- Bugscope Teamthanks Max
- 10:19 am
- Studentthats a random looking name
- Studentyour welcome :)
- Studentcan you tell where an insect was when it died
- Studentwhat is the most interesting bug you have ever seen? is it one that we might of heard of???
- Studentis that mucus?
- Studentit looks like mars
- StudentThe one in the middle below the hole
- Studentis it possible for a swarm of mosquitos to kill a person or animal
Bugscope TeamHighly unlikely, but I have heard of some livestock being killed by swarms of mosquitoes. Very rare though.
- Studenthow do beetles feel?
- Studentis that teeth?
- Student:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
- Bugscope TeamMax this is Scot, in a meeting, Thanks
- StudentThe one in the middle below tthe hole
- Studentdo beetles chew their food
- Studentthanks annie
- StudentXD
- StudentIs that like a suction cup?
Bugscope Teamwhat we are looking at, and it is kind of hard to see, is 2 palps (looks like a bridge) are close together, and behind that is the mouth. Palps help the insect manipulate or taste its food
- Studentcan a pack of tics kill a person
- Studentare those little hairs?
- Studentcan a swarm of mosquitos kill a person or animal
- StudentANNIe, the one in the middle below the hole
Bugscope TeamUm, that looks like some dirt or maybe some of the silver paint that we use to make the specimen conductive
- TeacherCan you please explain to the class what part of the beetle head we are looking at right now?
- Studentcan a leech suck so much blood that it kills you or several ticks?
- StudentHow many bugs do you look at each day?
- StudentI know its not an insect
- Studentor is it?
- Studenthow long can they fly ion the air
- Studenthow do beetles protect them self
- Studentanswer time
- Bugscope Teamso right now we are looking at mouth parts
- 10:24 am
