- Bugscope Teamelizabeth might login early this morning
- Bugscope Teamwe
- Bugscope Teamwe'll try to finish up presets early, so she can test out the interface, if she wants to
- Bugscope Teamgot it Holmes Wood

- 7:56 am
- Bugscope Teamhi mrs. d!
- Bugscope Teamwelcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Teamwe are making presets, and happen to be looking at the wendy's salt right now
- Bugscope TeamGood morning MrsD!
- TeacherHi, I'm teaching another class right now, so I'm only going to be on and off here
- Bugscope Teamwe have the controls locked just now, until we get the presets done, or mostly done
- Bugscope Teammultitasking
- Bugscope Teamno problem, we'll be here
- TeacherWere you able to use some of my bugs, or were they too far gone?
- Bugscope Teamwell, we didn't get any of them in the sample, sorry
- TeacherThat's ok
- Bugscope Teama small miscommunication between the sample prep folks
- Bugscope Teambut we've got a nice collection of stuff for ya
- TeacherIt looks like it!
- 8:01 am
- Bugscope Teamwe've got a praying mantis, wood louse, japanese beetle, house fly, millepede, beetle, moth, owl fly larva, skeeter, fruitfly
- Bugscope Teamand a mosquito too!
- TeacherGood, I was looking forward to seeing the japanese beetle... The mosquito should be very interesting!
- 8:08 am
- Bugscope Teamsession is unlocked, you now have control mrsd, any questions let us know
- Bugscope Teamyou should see controls on the right side in your browser window (magnify, navigation, focus and adjust)
- Bugscope Teambelow that are the presets, you can click any preset any time, and it'll take you to that location
- Bugscope Teamyeah you are ready to roll
- 8:14 am
- TeacherGreat, this class ends at 8:20, so I should be done with their questions in a few minutes
- 8:19 am
- TeacherHow do I control how far I go when I click to drive?
- Bugscope Teamwhen you want to stop you click again
- Bugscope Teamit is tricky
- Bugscope Teamsometimes click to center is easier
- Bugscope Teamhere you can focus -- if you go the wrong way just go the other way
- 8:25 am
- TeacherMy class just got here... they are going to start the slow process of logging in
- Bugscope Teamlooking very good
- Bugscope TeamAnnie just dropped off a boatload of mosquitoes, fleas, antlions, etc.
- StudentHi
- Bugscope Teamhi students, welcome to bugscope
- Bugscope Teamhello all
- Bugscope TeamHello! Welcome to Bugscope!
- StudentThanks
- Studenthi
- Studenthey everyone!!
- Studentyo whats up
- Studento why hello there
- Bugscope Teamthis is the head of a mosquito
- Studentwow
- Studentdon't worry about it charlie
- Studentwoah thats a dirty mosquito
- Studentdoubt
- Studentit looks like a scarcrow
- StudentNICE!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bugscope TeamMrsD is driving the microscope
- Studentor I mean chuck
- Studentits so ugly
- StudentNICE!!!
- Studentdude just stop talking
- Bugscope Teamyou can see the bases of the antennae
- Studentno eyes?
- Bugscope Teamand the eyes that wrap around the head
- Studentcan we look at the eyes
- Studentwhat
- Studentthis is lauren
- Bugscope Teamthe dome like things are the eyes
- Bugscope TeamF5
- Bugscope Teamask her to try refreshing: F5
- Studentsorry 'bout that
- 8:30 am
- Bugscope Teamnow we are right in the middle of the head
- Studentthats gross
- Studentwhat are the folds in the face
- Studentlets play wow
- Studenti know
- Bugscope Teamthe sort of deflated things around the periphery of the image were ommatidia -- the facets of the eyes
- StudentWhat do the Bug experts do during the day?
- Studentthats jibberish
- Studenti'm in for wow
- Bugscope Teamwe train people to use all of the microscopes down here
- Studentwhat is your yearly salery
Bugscope Teamuniversity staff make less than people in industry, but we have other benefits. we make anywhere from 50-100K/year
- Bugscope Teamwe do alright
- Student*salary
- Studenthow many microscopes do you have?
- Bugscope Teamnot so good this year thoughy
- Bugscope Teamabout 20 'scopes
- Studentoh. thats too bad.
- Bugscope Teammost of them have their own rooms
- Studentfun?
- Studenthow much does one microscope cost?
Bugscope Teamthis electron scope you are using 600K, as scott said
- Studenta lot
- Studentwhat is the goo when you squish a lady bug
- Studentfunnny brad
- Bugscope Teamthe SEM was $600,000
- Studentis the mosquito dead cuzz thats the way it shud be
Bugscope Teamyes all the insects we have in the 'scope are dead
- Studentdang!!
- Studentthats more than my house!
Bugscope Teamyou own a house?
- Bugscope Teamthe TEM was a little less expensive but would cost more to replace now
- Studentmine too!!
- Studentme too'
- Studentmy parents house
- Studentwhat is that?
- Bugscope Teamthis is the tip of the mosquito proboscis with a scale stuck to it
- Bugscope Team;)
- Bugscope Teamif they weren't dead, they would be pretty fast because we have the sample under vacuum
- Bugscope Teamwe can't see the sharp part -- the lancet
- Bugscope Teamit is inside this sheath
- Studentthese things are weird looking...
- Bugscope Teambut proboscis aren't always stingers, the elephant trunk is also a proboscis
- Studentcan you wink again
- Studentyou guys are confusing me with big words
- Bugscope Teamthe proboscis is sort of prehensile -- it can be manipulated like an elephant trunk
- Studenti dont understand this
- Studentcan you show us a wheel beetle
Bugscope Teami'm sorry but we don't have a wheel beetle today
- Bugscope Teamthese are microsetae on the surface of the proboscis
- Student(not brad)
- Studentwhat is that
- Student???
- 8:35 am
- Studentits scary!
- Bugscope Teamyou mean an assassin bug with the wheel on its back?
- Studentoh godd
- Studentbugs are assassins!?!
- Studentthats so ewwie
- TeacherWhat sort of beetle is this?
- Studenti thought they were coated with platinum?
Bugscope Teamhmm, i've never heard of coating with platinum, but scott or cate would know better than me, they are the microscopists
- Studentdang what are the scizor like things near its mouth
- Bugscope Teamsome bugs specialize in eating other bugs
- Studentdoes it kill people
- Bugscope Teamthose are the jaws
- Bugscope TeamI think generally they have dry waste
- Studenthow can you get poisioned from a bug bite
- Studentarent the bugs coated in platinum?
- Studentthat was my question!
- Studentyou copied me john
- Bugscope Teamwhen we see horizontal lines on the sample it is charging up with electrons
- Studentcopy + paste !!
- Bugscope Teamwe can put Pt on them but usually use Au/Pd
- TeacherI am not a great driver, but noone else is saying that they want to drive right now
Bugscope TeammrsD, you did real good
- Studentoh okay thanks
- StudentCan we see the owl fly larva eye
- Studentwhat is the ration of gold to platinum
- Bugscope Teamany of you can control the 'scope if you wanted to
- Bugscope TeamHogen I gave you control
- Bugscope TeamHogan, sorry
- Bugscope Teamhogan has control of the scope now, hogan try driving a bit
- Bugscope Teamso you should be able to cruise to the owlfly larva
- Studentwhos hogan
- Bugscope Teamwe don't know if you don't
- Studentnever mind
- Bugscope TeamDifferent types of insects excrete their nitrogenous wastes in different ways. Insects that spend all their time in water excrete pure nitrogen, which is the least energetically expensive way--but it only works in insects that don't have to worry about holding onto their water. Most insect excrete dry urea, like birds do.
- Bugscope Teamto answer the urination question
- Studentthats awesome
- Bugscope Teamhere we see the mouth
- Studentthanks
- Studentwell then
- Studentyeah it is
- Studentthats pretty cool
- Studentwhat are those hairy things
Bugscope Teamthose are called setae (sea-tea), they are sensory fibers on insects that help them sense their environment
- Bugscope Teamon this plate, which I think is a clypeus, we can see tiny pores
- Bugscope TeamI wanted Annie to see them
- Bugscope Teamball and socket joint
- Bugscope TeamOOF
- Studentwhat do bugs eat
Bugscope Teamthat depends on the insect. Some are predatory and eat other bugs, or if they are really big maybe small lizards and birds. Others drink pollen or yeast
- 8:40 am
- Bugscope Teamsetae stick through the exoskeleton, and are attached to nerves underneath
- StudentOOF?
- Studentdo you enjoy learning about bugs??
- Bugscope Teaminsects have LOTS of setae
- StudentNo
- Studenthow come some bugs sting people or bite
- StudentHow big is the room you work in?
Bugscope Teamwe are all in different rooms. the scope is in a room about 15'x15'
- Bugscope Teamyes the more you learn the more interesting everything is
- Studentohh i see
- Bugscope Teamthe room for the 'scope is maybe 15 by 15
- Studentare there anymore ladybugs left because all i ever see anymore is those orange beetles that look like ladybugs
- TeacherWhat is this?
- Bugscope Teamthis is some fungus on the owlfly larva
- Studenti like ladybugs
- Bugscope Teamthe web-looking stuff
- Studenti like you kristen
- Bugscope Teamno ladybugs today, though
- Studentwe like u too rachel
- Student=]
- Studentno i like rachel more than charlie : )
- Studentdo bees die when they sting you
Bugscope Teamyes, when a honey bee stings you its stinger gets caught in your skin. The bee leaves a big chunk of its body behind, and dies soon after of fluid loss or weakness.
- Studentno love for matt and john
- Studentcharlie me and rachel like you too
- Studentew that picture looks gross
- Bugscope Teamhogan, you are doing a great job of driving
- Studenti wanna be a cicada
- TeacherWhy are there so many japanese beetles everywhere this year?
Bugscope TeamJapanese beetles are not native to North America. They were introduced from Japan in the 1910s or 1920s. There are a number of theories that explain why they are so abundant in their non-native habitat. The most popular theory is that by escaping their native range, they escape the diseases and the predators that naturally control their population.
- Bugscope Teamsome insects that live part of their lives underground come out when they sense the rain hitting the surface
- Studentdo bugs migrate
Bugscope Teamwell, the monarch butterfly migrates, long distances too
- Bugscope TeamI noticed that too mrsD
- Studenthow long do bugs live
- Bugscope Teamthe cicadas must reach the right developmental stage and then become more alert to their surroundings
- Studentwow
- Studentthen why do they sting anyways
- Studentthats disgusting
- Bugscope Teamit caries, of course, how long they live -- the cicadas have at least 17 and 13 year cycles
Bugscope Teamthere is a very interesting theory about why cicadas have a *prime* number life cycle - if you have a life cycle of a large prime number, then you have less of a chance of meeting a predator who's life cycle isn't a prime number
- Studentbesides a defense
- Bugscope Teamvaries, I mean
- Studentwait the chuck of the bees body is left in you?
- Studentdo they know if they sting someone they will die
Bugscope TeamThey don't "know" much--you have to remember that insects are pretty much chemically controlled organisms--they do what their hormones "tell" them to do.
- 8:45 am
- Studentchunk**
- Studentback in the jurassic period, werent there millipedes that were like as big as the classroom?
- Student: p
- Bugscope Teama chunk of the bee is left in you -- a stinger with an attached pump
- Studenteww
- Studentsweeeeeeeeeeetttt
- Studentwill bugs ever get bigger
- Bugscope Teamthe millipedes would be bigger but not that big
- Bugscope TeamYou have control Jake/John
- Studentlets see a dragon
Bugscope Teamwe would have to image your brain waves imagination to actually see a dragon
- Bugscope Teamthis is the owlfly larva again
- Studentwhat the...
- Bugscope Teampretty close to a dragon, this
- Bugscope Teama bad little dude
- Bugscope TeamSo the populations can grow unchecked in their new habitat
- Bugscope Teamrelated to antlions
- Studentwhat is it again?
- Studentits related to a lion?
- Studentwhat?
- Studentuckkkkk
- Bugscope Teamantlion. when it is an adult it resembles a dragonfly
- Studentwow
- Studentdragon fly duh seriously wow
- Studentugly guy..
- Studenti still wanna see a dragon
- Studentreminds me of kenny
- Studenthahaha rachel is such a tease
- Studentno such thing as a dragon? its a dragon fly duh
- Studentjkjkjk
- Studentyea brad...
- Studentyou think of me too much
- Studentkidding
- Studentok
- Studentokay
- Student=]
- Studentthe really small red bugs that you see alot the summer; what are those?
Bugscope TeamThose are mites
- Bugscope Teamthis is the face of the pipllbug
- Bugscope Teamduh pillbug
- Bugscope Teamyou can fix the focus
- Bugscope Teampillbugs are related to crabs
- Studentoooo
- Bugscope Teamyay!
- Studentkilling spree
- Bugscope Teamd'oh
- Bugscope Teamyay again
- 8:50 am
- Studentyayyyy
- Studentd'oh
- Studentare there any images of tapeworms
- Studentooohh
- Studentwhy cant we see anything?
- Bugscope Teammites are arachnids
- Bugscope Teamsome of the setae we see are mechanosensory and some are chemosensory
- Bugscope Teamspidermites
- Bugscope Teamhit F5?
- Studentand whats the difference between a horse fly and a normal fly? and whats a real fly?
Bugscope TeamA true fly has two wings, where most insects have four wings. A horse fly is a type of true fly in the family Tabanidae.
- Studentpreying mantis
- Bugscope TeamAztec salt
- Studentyummy
- Bugscope Teamif your image goes black, try hitting F5 (refresh)
- Studentnice!!!!!
- Studentreally?
- Bugscope Teamhorseflies have slashing mouthparts and drink blood
- Studentwhats the difference between a horse fly and a deer fly
Bugscope TeamThey are different species...deer flies are usually smaller.
- Studentthats not funny...
- Bugscope Teamthis is salt from wendy's, for some reason their salt is very cubic shaped
- TeacherDoes this look much different that other salt?
- Studentnever heard of aztec salt
- Studentclever
- Studentmw neither
- Bugscope Teamflies spit up on their food and digest it outside the body that way before sucking it back up
- Studenteverything in that resturant is square!
- Studentit looks like a giant square
- Bugscope Teamnormal salt is kind of a boring cube
- Studenti hate salt
- Bugscope Teamlike a giant square but no substructure like this shows
- Studentyoure a boring cube
- Bugscope Teamheh it's true square salt for square burgers
- Bugscope TeamOOF
- Studentno one cares kristen
- Studentfar enough?
- Studentmantis
- Studentyes they do
- Studentyea it does look like a sugar cube
- Studentwell not now
- Studentwhats a spiracle
Bugscope Teamit's a hole on certain insects, it is how some of them breath
- Bugscope Teamthe mantis head is pretty big. they are pretty cool if you can see the whole thing at once, but this one is too big to do that under this scope
- Bugscope Teamthis is a busted-up millipede
- Studentwhat is it?
- StudentOOF
- Bugscope TeamOOF
- Studentarent insects and crustaceans closely related??
- Studentohh gotcha
- StudentOOF
- Studenthow did it get busted
Bugscope TeamWhen insects and other arthropods die, their insides rot away, leaving just their fragile exoskeleton---and since it is fragile, it is easy to bust
- Bugscope Teamlike lobsters are just very big bugs
Bugscope TeamSCOTT!
- Studenti wanna drive
- Studentchuck!
- TeacherChuck + Kristin want to drive
- Bugscope Teamchuck and kristen, you have control now
- Bugscope TeamC&K you have control
- 8:55 am
- Bugscope Teamgo ahead chuck + Kristin
- Studentand when you are eating a crab and break open the shell its like breaking the exoskeleton and eating the meat which is really the goo inside the bug
- Bugscope TeamI got a reaction from our entomologist
- Studentdo people eat bugs?
Bugscope Teamyes some people do
- Studenti do
- Studentapparently she doesnt have much of a sense of humor
- Studenteww
- Studentreally?
- Bugscope Teamannie is a phd in entomology, she's very cool
Bugscope TeamNot yet...in May
- Studenteww
- Studentprobably tribes eat bugs
Bugscope TeamIn many places, insects provide a valuable source of protein. In Mexico, you can order a grasshopper taco. In places in Thailand, people regularly eat giant water bugs and silkworm pupae. And big beetle grubs are popular all over the world.
- Studentlets meet her
- Studentwhat is entomology
Bugscope TeamEntomology, from the Greek: entomo-/εντομο- "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and logos/λόγος, "knowledge",[1] is the scientific study of insects
- Studentdoes it taste good?
- Bugscope Teamin fact, for the giant isopod (which is a very big roly-poly) people in Taiwan eat them
- Studentwhat is that?
- StudentI want Wendy's now
- Studentchocolate frosty
- Studentoof
- Studentit looks hairy
Bugscope Teamwell, not hairs, setae
- Studentme too
- Studentyea
- Bugscope Teamchuck and kristen, you are doing a great job of keepin us on the road
- Studentfrosty sounds good right now
- Bugscope TeamAnnie is cool and knows I am just teasing her.
Bugscope Teamyes Yes, I know ;)
- Studenti kinda want portillos
- TeacherWhat are the very tiny hairs for?
Bugscope Teamthey are used to sense the environment. the setae are connected to nerves underneath the exoskeleton. think of them like cat whiskers, but if the cat had armor on
- Studentnow scots a tease
- Studentwhat are those hairy things
- Studentoh boy i hate teases
- Studentdoes scot go out with annie
- Studentthe tiny hairs are probably for protection
- Bugscope Teamthe tiny hairs may have different purposes
- Studenthow do some bugs stick on walls?
Bugscope Teamgreat questions! check out preset #2, tenent setae!!!
Bugscope Teamthey have tiny pads of setae called a pulvillus. These have special setae that act like suction cups or velcro that lets them walk on walls
- Bugscope TeamI have eaten several different type of arthropods: shrimp and lobster (of course), but also I have had giant water bug, a scorpion, ants, crickets, meal worms and fried caterpillars.
- 9:00 am
- Bugscope Teamsome of them increase surface area and thus may help give lift to flying insects
- StudentWhy do crickets make different sounds in different temperatures?
Bugscope TeamInsects are cold-blooded, so their behaviors are affected by the temperature. When it is cold, they make sounds more slowly than when it is warm.
- Studentwhats your favorite bug to eat?
Bugscope TeamUmm, I don't like insects very much. I guess the fried caterpillars--they just taste like cheetos.
- Bugscope Teamsome of the microsetae form patterns that help species recognize each other
- Bugscope TeamOther than shrimp and lobster and crab, and stuff like that, I don't like the way that arthropods taste. I think they taste like dirt.
- Studenti wish i could walk on walls
- TeacherChuck said he doesn't want to drive anymore... I can take control if noone else wants it.
- Bugscope TeammrsD, you've got control again
- Bugscope Teamtwo of the presets show some of those tenent setae
- Teacherkrinkle wants to drive now actually
- Bugscope Teamkrinkle, you've got control, drive carefully
- Bugscope Teamthe larger setae have mechano- or chemoreceptor capabilites
- Studentdont drive under the influence
- Bugscope Teamcapabilities
- Studentkrinkle logged out
- Studenthaha
- Studenti bet they dont taste like cheetos
- Studenteww i dont think i can eat cheetos anymore
- Studentflaming hot or regular
- Bugscope Teamrachel has control now
- StudentOn average, how long do bees live?
Bugscope Teamgosh, it totally depends on the species, any particular one you are interested in knowing about?
- Studenthahaha rachel
- Studenti dont want control!
- Studentcome on ray ray
- Studentwhy are hornets so aggressive
- Bugscope Teamwho would like to drive?
- Teacherthe control got messed up... can you give it over to johnnyT?
- Bugscope TeammrsD, you've got control again
- StudentHoney Bees
- Bugscope TeamjohnnyT has it now
- Studentah thank you i'm done
- Studentjohnny t is great and working for me tonight
- Studentwhat is it?
- 9:05 am
- Studenttreeee
- Bugscope Teamthis is pretty high mag
- Studentenough brad
- Studenttree whatt?
- Bugscope Teamhere we go
- StudentOn average how long do Honey bees live
Bugscope Teamwell, i'm not so sure, but i think the worker honey bees live just one season, so a few months? i'm not sure thought and couldn't find a strait answer on the internet. maybe annie knows?
- Studentyea brad tree what?
- Bugscope Team this is the head of the serious bigboy praying mantis
- Studentwhat are the is the most significant discoveries or questions this t ype of microscope has developed??
- Studentbig boyyyy
- Studentwhy are hornets so aggressive
Bugscope TeamHornets and other social insects are programmed to defend their hives. If they perceive a threat to the hive, they will attack the perceived threat
- Studenthey guys sorry im late
- Studentrachel likes big boyssss
- Studentwhy are hornets so aggresive?
- Bugscope Teamthis microscope allows people to image 3D structure at high mag with great resolution
- Studenthow many times has that been asked?
- Studenthi
- Studenta lot
- StudentWhat do Entomologists do during the day?
Bugscope TeamWHat are you doing today annie?
Bugscope TeamI do lots of different things, I write scientific papers, I pin insects, I use the microscope for my research, I go to seminar. During the summer, I do field work, where I set up traps for beetles all over California
- StudentI like your purple shirt rachel 2
- Studentwhat r we looking at right now
- TeacherDid most of you major in a more general science field as undergrads, and then specialize as grad students?
Bugscope Teami got a BS in physics
Bugscope TeamAs an undergrad, I majored in biology with a minor in chemistry. Then I studied entomology for my masters and now for my PhD
- Bugscope TeamI am not sure that it has produced notable discoveries but it contributes every day to our ability to observe and help confirm results
- Studentew
- Studentoh god
- Studentewwie
- Bugscope TeamI have only undergrad degrees, in English and Biology
- Bugscope Teambut I have been doing this for a long time
- Studentweird
- Studentwould you call yourself a genius?
- TeacherWhere exactly is this on the beetle?
- Bugscope Teami have a bachelors and masters in music composition
- Studentkristin I like your purple shirt
- Studentyarghhh genius
- Studentare flies and spiders and ants and other insects actually aware of their surroundings on a larger scale? do they know we exist? i mean whhat do you think bcuz u cant know for sure what they think
Bugscope Teamyeah, it's hard to know what they really think. but i think some studies are done to try and know more about their "understanding". annie might know?
- TeacherAnd what are the suction cup looking things for?
- Bugscope Teamthis is the pulvillus
- Studentno I'm connor
- StudentMaybe I'll go into Entomology
Bugscope TeamEntomology is a great field--there is a old saying, what do you call a biologist with a job? Answer: an entomologist.
- Bugscope Teamthe suction cups are what help the beetle climb on vertical surfaces
- 9:11 am
- Studentwow
- Studentthis was fun but its time to gooo bye everyone!
- Studentyeah see ya later
- Bugscope Teamthank you class, you al rocked and or rolled. big time.
- StudentBYE BYE
- Studentgobye
- Studentbye
- StudentThanks
- Studentthanks to the people down there
- Studentvery interesting
- Bugscope Teambye all. thank you for all your questions
- Bugscope Teamyou were great
- Studentbye annie bye alex bye cate bye scot bye scot j
- Studentthanks for showins us around and answering our questions!!!!
- Bugscope TeammrsD, the chat and images are all saved to you member page: http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/members/2008-071
- Bugscope TeamThank You!
- Bugscope Teamchowzers!
- TeacherThe bell is going to ring soon, so we will have a lull in students until about 9:20 or 9:25.
- Bugscope Teamcool we can see if we need to fix anything
- Bugscope TeamHolmes
- 9:16 am
- TeacherI assume that you are used to getting comments that are not always related to insects???
Bugscope Teamtotally, they were fine
- Bugscope Teamoh yeah no problem]
- Bugscope Teamwe do it too
- Bugscope Teamyes it's pretty normal
- Bugscope Teamif the kids are rude we ignore it an concentrate on the good kids -- but your kids were all good
- Bugscope Teama lot of time they just want to be acknowledged
- Bugscope Teamsometimes we give the bad ones control and some responsibility
- Bugscope Teamwe do have the ability to knock off somone logged in, and close the session. but i'm not sure we've ever had to do that... yet ;)
- TeacherGood, I'm glad... we are dealing with 16 and 17 year olds here... I am never sure what is going to come out of thier mouths.
- Bugscope Teamtotally understand, no problem mrs D :)
- Bugscope Teamwe have had some serious savage kids before -- with obscene login names, even
- Bugscope Teamwe mostly feel sorry for the teachers
- Bugscope Teamwe figures sometimes there's anarchy in these classrooms and we're sitting down here in these darkened rooms, chillin'
- Bugscope Teamcan't tipe
- 9:22 am
- Bugscope TeamHello BANDOS!
- Studentwhat are we looking at here?
- Studenthello Scot
- Bugscope Teamnot sure jsut where we are now
- Bugscope Teamcan you take the mag down a little lower?
- Bugscope TeamBANDOS you can now drive
- Bugscope Teamyou have control
- Bugscope Teamso you may choose a lower mag if you want
- Bugscope Teamto see where you are
- Bugscope Teamoh this is a fruit fly
- Bugscope TeamI know where we are now
- Studentso what are we doing?
- Studentis this the leg?
- Studentno
- Studentwhat is that?
Bugscope Teamthis is a fruit fly
- Studentheyyyyyy
- Bugscope TeamEmily let us know when you would like to drive
- Studentfruit fly
- StudentEww. What is that?
- Bugscope Teamsee the mouth?
- Studentya
- Guestthese are some morose images
- StudentWhat is this?
- Studenti wanna see it's eye
- Bugscope Teamfruit flies have 2 compound eyes (which take up most of the head) and 3 ocelli, which you can see on the top of its head
- Studenthi how are you
- Bugscope Teammorose, yeah -- well they are dead
- Studentwhy does it have so much hair
- Studentthats sweet\
- Studentthis is very interesting!
- Studentno it isnt
- Studentagreed
- Bugscope Teamthe hairs (setae) have sensort functions in many cases
- Studentcloser
- Studenthi scot
- Bugscope Teamsensory that is
- Bugscope TeamOOF
- Studentso what does your job consist of?
Bugscope TeamI am an entomology graduate student and my job is pretty variable. I research pheromone communication in longhorned beetles...and I do field work-trying to trap beetles in pheromone traps. I use DNA to try to understand how longhorned beetles are related. I write scientific papers, I use the SEM to look for pores associated with pheromone production.
- StudentSo are each of those bumps little eyeballs?
- Studenthey scot my name is also scott but with 2 T's
- Bugscope Teamhi Courtney
- Studenthey
- Bugscope Teamenhance-- this is out of focus or OOF, try focusing
- Bugscope Teamtry focussing now
- Studentwe are trying to focus
- 9:27 am
- StudentHey
- Bugscope Teamthere you go
- Bugscope Teamawesome
- Studentwoah
- Studentthere we goi
- Studentwhats focusing?
- Studentgo*
- StudentSO what is that
- Studentwait is that its eye?
- Studentwhat are those little daggers?
- StudentWhat;s with the spikey things?
Bugscope Teamthose are all setae (or seta for one) and they help the fruit fly detect wind movement or direction
- Bugscope Teamnow you can see that the ommatidia have bristles (setae) sticking out from between them
- StudentOhhh.
- Bugscope Teamthose setae bend in the wind
- Studentwhat do those do?
- Studentwhat purpose do they have?
- Studentso..
- StudentDo those help them see?
- Bugscope Teamso if a hand or fly swatter were coming at them, they could easily outmaneuver it
- Studentoh sweet
- Studentcool
- StudentWho want to go chill in the BIG EASY with me
- Bugscope Teamthey help the fly determine wind direction, as Cate said
- StudentHow do they help though?
- StudentBOO
- StudentOhh
- StudentWhat is this!
- Studentwwwooowwww
- Studenthmm
- Studentewww
- Bugscope Teamthis is a mosquito
- Studentthats wierrd
- Studentthats creepy.
- Bugscope Teamtheir compound eyes take up most of the head
- Studentwheres the eyes?
Bugscope Teamthey are covering most of the head
- Bugscope Teamit kind of looks like a hunchback
- Studentzoom in on the thing that he bite you weith
- Bugscope Teamthe eyes form most of the head
- Bugscope Teamthat we see
- Studentthats sick
- Bugscope TeamSam you got it dude
- StudentThis is awesome!!!
- Studentwhat are you majoring in?
Bugscope TeamI am working on my PhD in entomology

- Studenthow do lice stick to your head?
Bugscope TeamThey have little claws that cling to your hair.
- Guestdo bugs drink water?

- Studenthow do you determine the gender of bugs
Bugscope TeamMale and female insects are usually look slightly different and if you learn the differences it is easy to tell them apart. Generally, female insects are larger than males. Males usually have longer or more ornate antennae, larger eyes, or brighter colors. It depends a lot on the species.

- Studentummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
- Studentyayayayayay
- Studentwhat is that?
- Guestdo bugs breathe in oxygen?
Bugscope Teamyes, they all do. They "breathe" through spiracles, which are like nostrils located on the insect's abdomen. The spiracles connect to trachae, which connect to smaller and smaller tracheoles. Each insect cell has to get its oxygen from a tracheole--they do not have blood that carries oxygen.
- Studentcan i have control?

- Studentwhy are they your favorite?
Bugscope TeamWell, they are really diverse, ranging in size from 2 mm all the way up to almost 7 cm. They are often really beautiful, metallic green, metallic purple, bright red. And despite their size and abundance, we know very little about their biology
