Project

Title Monarch Butterfly Study
Insects Monarch butterflies: adult, caterpillar, chrysalis, potentially other butterfly or moth species
Description In this project, we will examine and compare the mouth parts, leg structure, wing structure of Monarch Butterflies in various stages of development, as well as between different species of Lepidopteran species. Since our school is 98% white, racial diversity is something that we lack. We do have a wide range of students with respect to socioeconomic status due to the diversity of income level from our nine sending towns. My biology class is composed of 20-24 students, roughly half of which are female. I address the issue of equity in my class by fostering a strong sense of community, welcoming inquiry and active problem solving, and trying always to model and expect an attitude of fairness and respect. I expect that my colleagues will be really enthusiastic about this program, and the images we create. I would like to share them through our webpage, as well as through student research projects. We are a small faculty, and enjoy sharing ideas and strategies with each other.
