Title NCBUGS4U2C
Insects To be collected and voted on by students
Description The Bugscope idea began while teaching my students how to use a compound microscope in class. They were amazed at what their name, in pencil, looks like when magnified by 10. I used that activity to introduce several lab activities and to also encourage students to become more descriptive in their writing. I want to use Bugscope for the obvious science related reasons, but also to show my students that by taking ownership of their learning (for example controlling the microscope online) they become limitless. I want them to know that what happens in the classroom is just the tip of the iceberg. Students at SES apply to our school because they learn better through hands-on situations versus standard classroom environments. My students need stimulating and interactive experiences to help them feel successful. Every child in my room is successful, and even more so when provided with great opporutnities like Bugscope. My class consists of 9 girls and 7 boys. Two students are African American and 14 are Caucasian. Students will be making portfolios and posters using images captured during bugscope. Also, at our school we have theme nights when students, parents, faculty, and school board members are invited to enjoy presentations and projects lead by students based on what they learn during each of the six week units. Bugscope images would make for an excellant presentation!
