Description Bugscope Proposal McAuliffe Elementary School 1841 North Springfield Avenue Chicago, IL 60647 Phone: (773) 534-4400 Fax: (773) 534-4744 Contact:\tBob Bishop E-mail:\tBobBishopIL@yahoo.com \tWe would like to use the Bugscope program as part of a unit that we are doing on ants. It is a multi-activity unit using Chicago Public Schools’ new Technology Infusion program that facilitates web-based instruction. Nancy Valente, your Infusion Guide, will facilitate this integration. This unit will have three basic components: (1) the anatomy of ants; (2) the life cycle of ants; and (3) the social behavior of ants in a colony. The students participating in this program are 6th graders who have received instruction on basic computer skills and internet research. We are excited about the prospect of being able to control an electron scanning microscope via the internet. \tWe would like to view two types of common ants: a worker ant and a queen ant. The students would be using the bugscope program to view the ant’s anatomy and to compare and contrast the two specimens. \tWe will be conducting several other activities such as constructing clay models of ants using information gathered through Bugscope and other research, diagramming the life cycle of ants, and researching their social behaviors and comparing them with other animals. Additionally, we hope to start our own ant farm so that this project can be a continuing research activity. We also plan to have the students create a multi-media presentation on ants using Hyperstudio or by designing web pages. \tThe students will be asked to keep a portfolio of all activities completed for this project. Students will be asked to keep a descriptive journal of observations from the Bugscope activities. Additionally, students will be tested on the basic anatomy of an ant. \tWe appreciate your consideration of our proposal. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSincerely, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tBob Bishop \t\t\t\t\t\t\tMcAuliffe Elementary School
