- Bugscope Team Hi Sarah!

- Bugscope Team welcome to Bugscope!
- Guest Hello! And thank you! I'm in the teacher prep program at WSU Tri-Cities
- Guest My technology professor told us about this - pretty neat!

- Bugscope Team Cool. We are setting up for a session with a school in California that starts at 3:15 our time.
- Guest Sounds great!

- Bugscope Team who's your teacher? or should I say did (she?) come from here?
- 3:03pm

- Guest Her name is Lisa Page, and she's done sessions on here before.
Bugscope Team Aha! Yeah totally cool. Please say Hi to her!
- Bugscope Team (Scott Robinson)
- Guest I definately will!

- Bugscope Team Sarah you can see what we're doing -- we're choosing cool stuff on the stub and saving it as "Presets"
- Bugscope Team when the teacher and her students log in they will be able to select from them on the lefthand screen
- 3:08pm
- Guest that's a good idea - how long does it take to prepare something like this?
- Bugscope Team we start out with insects/arthropods that are dry, and we mount them on a stub that's 1.75 inches in diameter. then we coat them with gold-palladium. it takes about 25 minutes to make the stub, 10 or so minutes to coat it, and 30 to 40 minutes to do what we're doing now.

- Guest very cool. this is definately something I'd like to incorporate in my future classroom.
- 3:15pm
- Bugscope Team Sarah be sure to apply for a session far in advance; once the time gets closer and you've already been accepted, you can work with us to modify the time/day.
- Bugscope Team it's 'cause we've suddenly become so 'popular' that we are booking months ahead of time.
- Guest I will make note of that.
- Bugscope Team totally cool
- Bugscope Team we can hold only an average of two sessions/week
- Guest how long do the sessions usually last?
- Bugscope Team 45 minutes to an hour, usually
- Bugscope Team Deb!
- Bugscope Team Welcome to Bugscope!
- Teacher Hi ! This is Debbie. Im waiting for the kids to get their computers and then we are ready. Is there anything I need to do now?
- 3:20pm
- Bugscope Team please feel free to tryin driving, if you'd like
- Bugscope Team oops
- Bugscope Team please feel free to try driving...
- Teacher k

- Bugscope Team cool you are a natural

- Bugscope Team these are moth ommatidia -- the individual eye facets

- Bugscope Team moths can see in the ultraviolet wavelengths of color, whereas we cannot

- Bugscope Team the images we see come live from the electron microscope

- Bugscope Team you're driving a $600,000 microscope from your classroom

- Bugscope Team if you ever see scanning electron micrographs in color, it's because they've been colorized
- 3:25pm

- Bugscope Team because we're imaging using electrons, what we see comes to us as signal, in grayscale

- Bugscope Team this is one of those super nasty caterpillars that has a very bad sting if you touch it

- Bugscope Team this is one of the antennae of a springtail, which is very tiny

- Bugscope Team and this is a larger moth; its proboscis is normally coiled

- Bugscope Team SWYH are you here?
- Guest Yes.
- Guest What should we do for the mock session?
Bugscope Team I set things up so you can control the 'scope now
- Bugscope Team so you can drive, if you'd like, and you can also select from the presets on the lefthand screen
- 4:23pm
- Bugscope Team SWYH can you see that you have controls, over the top of the viewing screen?
- Bugscope Team and can you see the lefthand arrow?

- Guest What keys do I use to drive?
Bugscope Team use your mouse to control the magnification, focus, etc. at the top of the viewing screen

- Bugscope Team if you click within the image you see now, you can get the microscope to center on the place you click upon
- Guest I see that we click on the controls at the top
Bugscope Team yes!

- Bugscope Team I just clicked the minus on the magnification

- Guest how do you pan
Bugscope Team to move the sample, click once within the image and it will center on that point

- Bugscope Team we used to have click to drive, but it was too hard to know when to click to stop driving...

- Bugscope Team can you see the presets on the lefthand screen?
- Bugscope Team please let me know when you have questions

- 4:29pm
- Guest I think I am missing some controls, I have a + & - after Focus, but nothing after Mag
Bugscope Team first, try refreshing your browser, which is usually f5
- Guest by presets do you mean the pictures on the left
Bugscope Team exactly. if you click on one, the 'scope will drive to that place
- Bugscope Team it may be that your screen resolution needs to be changed so that you can see all of the controls
- Bugscope Team are you using a Windows machine?
- Bugscope Team you can right click on the 'desktop,' which will allow you to access 'Properties,' and you can then go to 'Settings' to change the screen size.
- 4:34pm
- Bugscope Team how are you doing?
- Bugscope Team 217 265 8164...
- Guest was atmax res, tried three lower resolutions but still looks the same
- Guest should we try a different laptop?
- Bugscope Team yes that might do it
- Bugscope Team is it possible there is some kind of firewall on your end?
- Guest possibly
- Bugscope Team also of course be sure refresh (F5) if you haven't already.
- Guest we will log out and try less secure computer
Bugscope Team hey cool I will be here

- Guest i forgot how u said to move to the side

- Bugscope Team click on the white arrow in the blue circle
- Guest oh just got it!

- Bugscope Team ant doing a cannonball

- Bugscope Team if you click on one of the presets, on the lefthand screen, the 'scope will drive to that place on the stub

- 4:48pm
- Bugscope Team now you can see the antenna, and where it rests above the head

- Bugscope Team those are microsetae

- Bugscope Team you can see the base of one of the microsetae

- Bugscope Team good job focussing
- Bugscope Team you can see that focus is basically up or down

- Bugscope Team once you get up to a super high mag like this, the electron beam can move the sample around
- Bugscope Team and you can see distortion from where the electrons are charging up this specific area

- Bugscope Team a rod-shaped bacterium -- bacillus -- is 2 microns long, usually
- Bugscope Team this is salt from a Wendy's

- Bugscope Team it has that cool incised appearance, unlike normal salt

- Guest so Wendy's doesn't usenormal salt?
Bugscope Team we really do not know, but we think that an anticaking agent has been added

- 4:53pm

- Bugscope Team the sodium chloride still makes cubic crystals, but they are affected by some other chemical or phenomenon that occurs when the salt is made

- Guest mysterious, eh?
Bugscope Team yeah. it's the only salt we know of that does this, but it's not like we've tried all of them

- Bugscope Team I am so happy that things are working now.

- Bugscope Team this is Scott, on another computer -- the one in my office
- Guest Is there anything else we need to know?
