- Student hi
- Teacher thanx babe
- Student this picture isn't live is it
- Student how do you zoom in
- Student what are the little hairs on the bug
- Student whats the difference between moths and butterflies?
Bugscope Team The differences are that moths typically fly at night and butterflies during the day. Moths can fold their wings down over their back and butterflies usually can't. Moths have filamentous antennae, and butterflies have a club on the end of their antennae.
- Student hey scott, what is that bug
- Student Welcome i need help what are we doing
- Student this thing loooks weired
- Student FIRST BUG?
- Student is this live?????
- Bugscope Team MaSoN this is live, but you are not moving the 'scope yet.

- Bugscope Team this is a caterpillar -- a larval insect

- Student oh, ok
- Student this bugg is awesome!!! :)
- Student Scott how do you move the scope
- Student o
- Student what are the hairs on it head used for
- Bugscope Team now you are zooming in on the mouthparts
- Student what is this
- Student y does the bug have hairs
Bugscope Team The caterpillar has hairs that help it to sense its environment: to smell, feel, and taste. The hairs on some caterpillars also have a defensive function--they rub off and irritated the skin and respiratory systems of potential predators.

- Student how do you zoom
- Bugscope Team one of the longest bugs is a walking stick
- Teacher hi scott

- Student wow

- Student this is awsome
- Bugscope Team walking sticks can get to be 15 inches long
Bugscope Team yes the Titan Stick Insect is the longest

- Student i like the walking sticks to there awsome
- Bugscope Team environment, that is
- Student what kind of mouth parts does it have?
- Student can caterpillars be poisonus?
Bugscope Team Some caterpillars have hairs that contain a fluid that causes rashes and burns if you pick them up. The regular hairs can also cause allergic reactions. There are also some caterpillars that are poisonous, but only if you eat them.

- Student travis dont ask for strangers cell phone number
- Student COME ON SCOT
- Student katie hi its krissy
- Student katie......what do u think of the bugg??

- Student what is on the picture
- Student Scott what am i looken at
- Student quit asking stupid questions
- Bugscope Team the caterpillar has a few very small eyes
- Student why don't butterflies eat your clothes
Bugscope Team They don't have the right kind of mouthparts...adult butterflies and moths have a long tube for a mouth...they can't really chew.
- Student does the cattipillar have eyes
Bugscope Team Yes..but we will have to focus on the head to see them.
- Teacher why is it so big
- Student WAT R WE LOOKIN AT????
- Student is it poisonous
- Student what is the butterflies class?
Bugscope Team Class Hexapoda
- Bugscope Team we don't know exactly where you are right now

- Bugscope Team the caterpillar may not be poisonous, but often they can ooze chemicals that are distasteful to ants, for example
- Student hey Cate do catapillars have Hypognathous
Bugscope Team I can answer that...yes, caterpillars generally have hypognathous mouthparts
- Student hf nbjdfhgjknghisodhg
- Student katie!!

- Student are we supost to do this worksheet?
- Student 9726764
- Student hi lance
- Student has a caterpillar killed a person?
Bugscope Team Probably not directly...maybe in some strange way...like a person slipped on a caterpillar and fell and hurt him or herself in a disastrous way. If you had a bad enough allergic reaction, you might die because of a caterpillar.
- Student yes
- Bugscope Team where is Hailey?
- Bugscope Team so between 11-12 inches in their wingspan
- Student nice striped shirt Corey
- Student thank you travis

- Student where is Cate?
- Student how many simple eys do they have
- Student alicia did you read it??????? its toward the bottom
- Student everyone cares
- Student CATE TELL ME ABOUT BUGS?
Bugscope Team bugs, or true bugs, comprise only a small part in the world of insects. Not all insects are bugs. A butterfly is not a bug. Does that help? A stinkbug is a bug
- Student hay brandon
- Student hey people
- Student not really dj
- Student yah joey no one cares
- Student Joey says to Dj, It is Okay
- Student How big can they get
- Student hey brandon
- Student Yesd really
- Student how long can mettamorphis take for a butterflie
Bugscope Team It depends on temperature, food availability etc. And it depends on the butterfly. Most butterflies will complete metamorphosis in about a month or so. Some take longer, some shorter.
- Student TELL ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Student HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
- Student PLZ
- Student hey sctt, do catapillars have Hypognathous orprognathous???

- Student ben how could a catipilar the size of a thimble kill someone
- Student Cate i have a question how many simple eyes do they have
Bugscope Team all those small bumps on the side of the head are simple eyes

- Bugscope Team Dory we had so many students on that things were seriously slowing down. Can we try two students to a computer?

- Student haaa.
- Bugscope Team one of the antennae is missing
- Student //
- Student wat is haa u crazy girls
- Student ""
- Student george i love u man
- Bugscope Team female mosquitos are the ones that bite people; they need blood so they have the energy to successfully lay their eggs
- Student is this the water boatman head?
- Bugscope Team this is a mosquito

- Bugscope Team I just moved us to the water boatman head
- Student ?
- Student what is a water boatmen?
Bugscope Team A waterboatman is a true bug in the family Corixidae...they live in ponds and lakes and they eat little algae and protists.
- 10:22am
- Student ? i am talkin to Scott
- Student no u arnt
- Student Hey!:) how u doin?
- Bugscope Team CJ the male mosquitos don't have much to do after they mate, and they don't need to eat much
- Student Hey sup!

- Student THAT LOOKS WEIRD AND COOL AT THE SAME TIME!!!
- Student COOOOLLL!!! we are too. havin fun???!!??
- Student Ah thanx for the info this stuff gets confusin

- Student Hey Scott!!! :)
- Bugscope Team it looks like there is a scale or some other insect on the forehead of this water boatman
- Student yup

- Student what is next?
- Bugscope Team They are also extremely cute.
- Bugscope Team Hi Abby Ann Carlee.

- Bugscope Team Monica Erin what is confusing you?
- Student how are you so good at this stuff scott?

- Bugscope Team If you cannot see the images from the electron microscope hit F5.
- Student does he have wings? If so, are they able to be seen?
Bugscope Team Waterboatmen do have wings and they fly fairly regularly. They are often found in temporary ponds, so they need to be able to fly around when their pond dries up.
Bugscope Team And, no we can't really see the wings from this angle. Sorry
- Student everything
- Student DOES IT HAVE WINGS? I KILE CAPITAL LETTERS
Bugscope Team it does have wings
- Bugscope Team I have been practicing this for a long time.
- Student abby and carlee u to are the crazy ones
- Student how long

- Student waz up daner tater
- Student HOW MANY EYES DOES IT HAVE?
- Student hiiiiiiiii
- Bugscope Team Katie and Kurt you are driving a scanning electron microscope from your classroom. And today we have insects in the microscope that you can image.

- Student is it a male or female
Bugscope Team Hmmm...it is hard to tell..

- Student does it have compound eyes? We're a bit confused. . .
Bugscope Team It does have compound eyes.
- Student hey whats up
- Student how many compound eyes does it have?
Bugscope Team it has two on the sides of its head
Bugscope Team It has two...sorry I didn't answer the question!
- Student Hey ABby ann CArlle how it Goin???!!!!???:)
- Student how confusing!

- Student are you by yourselfs?
- Bugscope Team Katie and Kurt this is all done from the Beckman Institute building on the University of Illinois campus.

- Student what are we supposed to be doing?
Bugscope Team You can ask questions about what we are seeing on the screen...:)
- Student hi scott

- Student coolio i wonder how many eyes this things has if any. Scott, does hav any eyes
- Student hey scott hows it going?
- Student how many simple eyes
Bugscope Team I am not sure if it has simple eyes...usually insect have three simple eyes....
- Student Why is it missing a leg????|
Bugscope Team When insects die, their connective tissue on the inside of the exoskeleton dries up and the legs get brittle...and they break.

- Student HELP
- 10:27am
- Student Is this still a water boatman?
Bugscope Team yes
- Bugscope Team Hi Broc and Dan!
- Student no mell
- Bugscope Team this is still the water boatman

- Student why not abby and carlee
- Student scott how are youu????

- Student idkkkk. cause we saiad soo
- Student does it have simple eyes

- Student Annie r u good at science
Bugscope Team I hope so. I am working on my PhD.
- Bugscope Team if we go to higher mag on the head we should be able to see the eyes, which are compound eyes, composed of many facets
- Student hi broc
- Student Hi Annie
- Bugscope Team the eyes are streamlined into the head, making them look very smooth

- Student Hiya danner

- Student does a catipillar have coumpound eyes
Bugscope Team Not really..they have a ring of small bumps...but they aren't really compound eyes like you see in adult insects
- Bugscope Team Abby Ann Carlee I am doing great, Thank You.
- Student hi how are u today
- Student am douing very fibe
- Student doing fine
- Student fine
- Bugscope Team Now you can see tiny setae (hairs) on the top of the head.
- Student your welcome. scott. :)
- Student Water boatmans live in water correct i figure that's where they get da name
Bugscope Team Yes. They live in ponds, lakes, and standing water. But they can fly.

- Student HEy SOph ann BRi!!!:) HOws it goin 4 ya??

- Student heyyy katie sophie ann bri!!!
- Student scott. are you smart?
- Student eh.... ok i guess? hheyyyyyy abby an carlee
- Student any antennae
Bugscope Team They have small bristle-like antennae.
- Student haa. whats up brriiiii
- Bugscope Team according to wikipedia: "Water boatmen are considered a delicacy to people in many parts of Mexico, where they are harvested and eaten in large numbers. They are also used and exported as pet food. They have also been known to provide endless pleasure for children in Africa where competitions are held between siblings and friends to catch the most water boatmen (in glass bottles) from their local ponds and swimming pools."
- Student HEY buddies!!! I don't no wat ?'s to ask????!!!!
- Student party
- Bugscope Team Sometimes I think I am smart, but you know that is not a good idea.

- Student what type of legs does it have
- Student \m/ \m/ \m/ ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!
- Student What kind of mouthpart do they have?
- Student What is not a good idea scott?
- Student oh, just trying to figure this out. u?
- Student what about mouth parts
Bugscope Team They have small sucking mouthparts, like all "true" bugs. They are opisthognathous (uhhh, I think that is how you spell that--projecting backwards)
- Bugscope Team that was the eye. I had moved the microscope so we could try to see the ommatidia, but they are so smooth it is hard to see them

- Student Hey Annie! is this one of ur classes or do u get 2 skip classes?
Bugscope Team Ha ha, I was finished with classes several years ago. Now I am working on writing up my dissertation...which is harder than taking classes (I think!)

- Student what type of antennae
Bugscope Team They have setaceous antennae.
- Student Hi mrs. Damery

- 10:32am
- Bugscope Team if you think you are smart you are bound to goof up and not feel so smart, Abby Ann Carlee

- Student do they have flagellum anntenae
- Student ARE THESE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES?
Bugscope Team nope
- Student legs?
Bugscope Team they have natatorial legs...legs modified for swimming!
- Student Oh. Haa. Well you seem pretty smart ann cool mann. Scott:)
- Bugscope Team Monica Erin the water boatman has very small antennae we do not see now.
- Bugscope Team Thank You.
- Student hi scott
- Student thanx scott
- Student which bug is this now?
Bugscope Team this is still the water boatman
- Student Yuour welcome. SCOT
- Student is it dead
Bugscope Team yes all the insects you see today are dead
- Student i know
- Student ijkolplokijuhygtfrdesw
- Student I mean Scott.
- Student ok thanks:)

- Bugscope Team this is cool!
- Student Scott how old are you
- Student So BRi its just you hhhhhmmmm...............................................:):)
- Bugscope Team this is the mosquito
- Student scott are u in school?
- Bugscope Team and we can see some of the mouthparts
- Student how many wings do mosquitoes hav
Bugscope Team they are one of the exceptions. Flies (of which a mosquito is one) have only TWO wings: one pair.
- Bugscope Team it would be hard to put a live insect in the microscope because we have to pump it to vacuum, so it would take a long time for it to pump to vacuum because it is so juicy, and the insect would die because of the lack of air
- Student how many pairs of wings do theyhave
Bugscope Team they have one pair
- Student Where can you find a waterboatman, SCott???????
- Student HI Cate!!!!!
- Bugscope Team I am not in school; I work here, and I think this is a super fun job.
- Student is this mosquito male or female?
Bugscope Team this one is female, it is the kind that will eat your blood
- Student IN THE WATER?
- Student what type of wings are they

- Bugscope Team Water boatmen you can find in small ponds, along the sides of lakes, in the summertime.
- Student i bet it is. do you talk to a lot of people? ann is this all u do scott?
- Student Your job does not look fun to me. do you get paid Scott??
- Student close up

- Student how do u tell the difference between male and female mosquitoes
Bugscope Team The easiest way to tell them apart is behavioral: male mosquitos do not bite you and they do not buzz around you. Morphologically: male mosquitos have extremely plumose antennae, and female mosquitoes have more flagellate antennae.
- Bugscope Team setaceous means they are sort of hairlike, small and slender
- Student WHY IS IT'S ANTENNAE COMING OUT OF IT'S EYE?
- Student hary
- Student ewwww
- Student what type of antennae

- Student that was phares

- Student idk
- Student weeeeeeeeee
- Student so was that
- Bugscope Team CJ we can tell usually by how ornate the antennae are. Males often have fancy antenne.
- Student dane and phares are silly!
- Bugscope Team antennae sorry
- Student wat kind of eyes
- Student scott???
- Student setaceos is its antennas
Bugscope Team Waterboatmen have setaceous antennae...not mosquitoes

- Student legs? :)
- Student do they have compound eyes
Bugscope Team they have 2 compound eyes.
- Student yep
- Student sccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc

- 10:38am
