- Bugscope Team Good morning!
- Bugscope Team Chris -- you made it!
- Bugscope Team Hi kids
- Bugscope Team Hi Annie!
- 8:30am
- Bugscope Team We didn't find any mites on this earwig, which comes from Beckman.
- Guest Good Morning-I am here
- Bugscope Team You can see an earwig on the screen now. Its mouth and face are kind of messy, so we didn't use those parts as a preset -- we just stopped here.
- 8:38am

- Bugscope Team Welcome to Bugscope!
- Bugscope Team Be sure to let us know when you have questions.
- Teacher Hello, I am the teacher and am introducing thsi to the class now. They will log in in just a minute.
- 8:45am
- Bugscope Team Good morning nva!
- Bugscope Team oops nya
- Bugscope Team let us know when you have any questions
- Bugscope Team Hello! Welcome to Bugscope!
- Student What is a bug?
- Student what is a ear wing
- Student what is a earwig
- Student same
- Student what is a earwig
Bugscope Team an earwig is one of those beetles you see around the house, sometimes, and around plants, that has a pincer tail.
- Student what is this bug
Bugscope Team this is a tick that was forcefully removed from someone or something because its mouthparts are missing
- Student how any bugs did you collect
Bugscope Team Isaiah we collect bugs whenever we can. People send them to us, and whenever we find them we save them for Bugscope.
- Student earwig
- Student u are typing the same thing!
- Student is bug poisnies
- Student oh!
- Student OH OK
- Student why do we have bug

- Bugscope Team Gah! Scott!! And earwig is not a beetle!!!
- Student wat type of bug is this
Bugscope Team this is a tick, they feed on your for around a week and fall off by themselves when they are full.
- Student does it hurts
- Student hi alonzo
- Student what is a earwig
- Student does it hurt when it bites
Bugscope Team A tick doesn't usually hurt when it bites you. You usually don't feel it at all. It can hurt when you remove an embedded tick, and it really hurts when a tick bite gets infected.
- Student What is that bug?
- Student ok
- Student STOP IT
- Student does the earwig have any hair.
- 8:50am
- Student are you sciencetist?
- Bugscope Team Annie is an entomologist -- she studies insects.
- Student what state are u located in
Bugscope Team we are at the University of Illinois
- Student what
- Student WHAT DOES AN EARWIG EAT
Bugscope Team Earwigs usually eat decaying plant matter. They occasionally eat flowers and living plant matter, though.
- Student is that hair in the bug arm

- Student is this a boy or girl
- Student where do tinks live
Bugscope Team Ticks live anywhere there is an animal to feed upon. There are ticks in Antarctica!
- Student what is coming out of the legs?
- Student does this tick carry diseases?
Bugscope Team Maybe not this tick specifically, but in general, yes ticks transmit a number of diseases: Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, etc
- Bugscope Team some earwigs eat other insects as well
- Student what is the population for ticks
- Student how many times have you done it

- Student where do tink live
Bugscope Team they hang off of long grasses so that it is easier for them to get on a host

- Student what do flies eat
- Student do ticks help you
Bugscope Team Ticks are not really beneficial to any thing....there are birds and mammals that eat ticks, but I am not sure if ticks make up the main portion of their diet.

- Student where do they came from
- Student no

- Student maybe
- Student do tink bites

- Student CAN THEY FLY
Bugscope Team Nope, ticks have no wing and cannot fly.
- Student why do ticks suck are blood
Bugscope Team That is just what they eat.
- Student yes
- Student is that the back of the bug

- Bugscope Team sometimes when we look at ticks up close we can see bacteria on their cuticle -- on the surface of their bodies

- Student are ticks really small?
Bugscope Team Some are really small, but some are quite large: up to the size of a pencil eraser.
- Student yes
- Student what eats tick
Bugscope Team Birds, small mammals, primates.
- Student can we see a fruit fly
Bugscope Team we do have a fly in the microscope today that we can see later
- Bugscope Team this is the tick, still, and what we see is the ventral side, which is the underside, the bottom side of the tick
- Student do you go places different to find different kinds of bugs?
Bugscope Team I do. I have traveled all over the US to collect insects. I have also been to Mexico and Costa Rica on collecting trips.
- Student ok thanks
- Student can u see ticks
- 8:55am
- Student where do ticks live
Bugscope Team They live on every continent of on the planet, including Antarctica
- Student yes
- Bugscope Team some ticks are so small you can barely see them
- Student do tick hop onto dogs
Bugscope Team ticks hop onto dogs, and they also hop onto people. often they climb up to the tops of long leaves of grass and wait 'til someone comes by so they can tag a ride
- Student HOW DO THEY GET ON PEOPLE
Bugscope Team they cling to the ends of grass with their back legs in the air waiting for a person or animal to come by. When they do, their claws grab onto the host and then they climb up to where they will feed

- Student wat is this
Bugscope Team this is on a bumblebee head. the "trees" are setae (hairs) and the footballs are pollen grains
- Student i think when your in the grass

- Student do they carry eggs
- Student what is in pollen

- Student does ticks fly?
Bugscope Team Nope, they don't have wings.
- Student this bee looks weird

- Student how do they make thier home
Bugscope Team Bumblebee queens dig a underground chamber for her nest. Then she lays eggs and the workers help to maintain and expand the chamber.
- Student they have big eyes
Bugscope Team insects that fly tend to have big eyes so they can see more of what is around them-- they rely on their eyes a lot more than ground dwellers like ants
- Student how can it see
- Student y do they sting
- Student WHY ARE THE EYES SO BIG
- Student its eyes are dirty!
Bugscope Team Michael we often find that the insects we are looking at are dirty. But sometimes it is not their fault -- they get dirty after they die.
- Student yes

- Student why is it so hair

- Student how did they get all that pullon

- Student the are so big

- Student do bee fly fast
- Student do they got hair
- Student why is the bee so dirty
- Student yes
- Student THANKS CATE
- Student do the tick jump very high
Bugscope Team Not really, it is more like they reach out and grab onto your clothes when you walk by
- Bugscope Team No problem Alonzo
- Student why does bees like honey
- Student thank you cate
- Student how do they stink
- Student why do bees feed the newborn queen royal jelly
Bugscope Team Royal jelly is different from the food that is fed to the normal worker bees. Something about the nutrients in the royal jelly causes the larva that it is fed to become a queen. We don't quite understand how exactly it happens yet.
- Student thank you annie
- Student how many eggs do they lay?
- Student how many queen bees are they?
- Bugscope Team here we can see grains of pollen on the head of the bee
- Student annie you are cool
Bugscope Team Thanks
- Student how do bees die when stirng people
Bugscope Team When a honey bee stings someone, the stinger gets caught in the skin of the "victim." The stinger and other parts of the bee's guts get stuck in the "victim's" body--and so the bee dies
- Student how did they find us
- Student how much pollen is on it's head
- Student why are bees black and yellow?
- Student WHAY DO BEES DIE AFTER THEY STING
Bugscope Team It is the honeybees that die after one sting. The bumblebees can keep stinging. Honeybees have a barbed stinger that is made to stick into their skin. When it sticks in and the bee tries to pull away, a muscle comes out of them that kills them. The muscle pumps more poison into whatever it stung and it also make the stinger move further into the victim. Bumblebees like wasps can sting multiple times
- 9:00am
- Student why do bees die when there stingers go
Bugscope Team Because the bee has lost a big part of its body and so it kind of dries out/bleeds to death
- Teacher sorry for the inundation of questions, our kids are very excited, just let us know if there is a better format
Bugscope Team we are used to this and tryn to answer questions as fast as we can -- we know we will miss some...
- Student is that rocks on it head

- Student is that hair on the bees head

- Student how do they jump on you

- Student thanks annie
- Student do they eat too much honey
- Student what kind of speashes are they?

Bugscope Team bees eat pollen, they make honey when with their spit

- Student honey
- Student how can u kill them
Bugscope Team TIcks or bees?
- Student can ticks get on bees
Bugscope Team Dwayne there are mites that get on bees, different kinds. Varroa mites are large and can often be found on honeybees.
- Student what is the white stuff?
- Student do jack balck stings
- Student how do they suk your blood for weeks
- Student i dont know
- Student do you know how much bees weagh
- Student how old can ticks be
Bugscope Team They can live for many many years. If they can't find a blood meal, ticks can hibernate for a long time--years--waiting for an appropriate host to come around.
- Student do spiders eat bees
- Student maybe
- Student how many kinds of bees r there?
- Student thank u cate
- Student wat kind of pic is this

- Student OH I DID NOT KNOW THAT
- Student Thank u cate

- Student tick iam talking about
Bugscope Team You can kill them by smashing their heads or cutting them apart. You can also put them in alcohol.
- Student what is that big blob?
- Student why does a spider claw hurt you
Bugscope Team You mean the claws on the feet? I don't think they really hurt.
- 9:06am
- Student are spiders bad
- Student can bees eat ticks? or can ticks eat bees?
Bugscope Team Nope, neither.
- Student is this a spider
- Bugscope Team you're welcome Hadiyah
- Student yes
- Student what type of spider is this
- Student can u see spider claws
Bugscope Team it is hard to see spider claws with your eyes only -- they have setae all around them, and it is difficult to see the claws.
- Student how many bees can be in one hive
- Student are spiders poinious
Bugscope Team All spiders have poison, which they use to kill their prey. However, most spiders are not poisonous to humans.
- Student what is sticking out
- Student how long is a spider
- Student can ticks get on spiders
Bugscope Team Nope, I don't think so.
- Student how big are spider
- Student thank you
- Student Ather they suk your blood how can they do that

Bugscope Team Kingdom Animalia
- Student is this spider poision
- Student what is this

- Student do u know how many kinds of poison spiders there r?

- Student do spiders have hair
Bugscope Team yes and lot of it, they use their hairs to feel what is around them, especially vibration
- Student are they claws really sharp
- Student are those the hairs of the spider
- Student what do they do at knight?
Bugscope Team some spiders hunt, others may sleep. It depends on the spider, though i think most will hunt for food
- Student do spider bite
- Student when does spiders hunt
Bugscope Team It depends upon the species. Some spiders hunt at night, some during the day. Some spiders don't hunt at all, they sit and wait for prey to get caught in their net
- Student how can spiders poison your blood
- Student do spiders have homes
Bugscope Team Some build homes--there are spiders that make web lined chambers underneath bark and rocks.
- Student why do spiders lay eggs?
Bugscope Team Because that is how they reproduce
- Student do spiders go to sleep?
- Student is some spiders quite
- Student are they claws really sharp
Bugscope Team they may be sharp but they won't hurt us. They use them to cling onto things (like when a ladybug is on your shirt) or to grab onto food
- Student do spider lay there eggs in there web?

- Student how big can spiders get
Bugscope Team Fabian some spiders can get as large as nearly one foot in diameter -- a bird-eating tarantula.
- 9:11am
- Student do bees sleep
- Teacher What type of spider are we viewing and where would we find them in the USA?
- Student whydo spiders eat otherbugs
- Student do spider eat other spider
- Student what kind of spider is that
- Student how much eyes do this spiders have?
Bugscope Team they have 8, just like the number of legs they have

- Student what is a beetle larva
- Student do spiders eat bees
Bugscope Team they can, they would just have to watch out for the stinger of the bee.
- Student what does it do
- Student annie how big are spider
Bugscope Team Spiders range in size from several millimeters to maybe 10 cm across
- Student do u know many kinds of spiders there r?
Bugscope Team there are about 38,000 described species of spiders
- Student were does the spider
- Student what do this spider do
- Student why does spiders have 8 eyes?

- Student how many legs does a spider has
Bugscope Team Kalobe s spiders have eight legs, and they can just let a leg fall of it they sense it has poison in it.
- Student spiders r very hairy?
Bugscope Team Yes, most arthropods are quite hairy. The hairs allow them to sense their environment through their thick cuticle.
- Student were does the spider live
- Student thank you annie
- Student ladies

- Student wat is a larva?
- Student thank you guys and girls
- Student those look like teeth look like small teeth
- Student 8 legs

- Student what is aBeetle Larva
Bugscope Team A larva is a "baby" beetle. It is like a beetle caterpillar.
- Student why do have spider

- Student annie how many eggs spider lay
Bugscope Team they lay enough to ensure the survival of atleast a few. It could be thousands to only a few. Spiders of average size probably lay around one hundred eggs.
- Student no

- Student Thanx Annie!!
- Student what kind of spiders are good
Bugscope Team Almost all spiders are good--they are important predators of irritating insect species.

- Student how many bees can be in one hive
- Student what do they eat
- Student hey scot why do beetles bite people
Bugscope Team Fabian I think when beetles bite people it is usually because they want to be left alone -- they feel threatened by people.

- 9:16am

- Student what is a Beetle larva
- Student can they die by taking a leg off because it has poison?

- Student where do spidres live

- Student does all spiders bit

- Student do the "babies" develope in the larva?
Bugscope Team No, the larva ARE the immature forms of an adult beetle. The larva will turn into an adult beetle.
- Bugscope Team I would say ALL spiders are good.
- Student how do you get beetle larva

- Student cate do larvas have any legs
Bugscope Team Some beetle larvae have legs, some do not. It varies a lot between species.
- Student thank you
- Bugscope Team I guess we aren't sure what kind of spider it was. It was a little smooshed, sorry

- Student how do you you know if spiders are boys or girls
Bugscope Team Rodney sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between boy and girl spiders, but often female spiders are much bigger than males. Sometimes, also, you can tell by the size of the spider's pedipalps, which are like feelers in front of the face. In males they are often larger and 'furrier.'
- Student thank u
- Student even larva have hairs!
- Student how many eggs does a spider lay
- Student how much eyes can this spider lay

- Bugscope Team One of my beetle traps got taken over by black widows
- Student Annie have you ever got bit by a spider
Bugscope Team I am sure that I have, I don't remember any outstanding incidents though.
- Student how do spider make there webs

- Student why is the micsrope color only showing the bugs white and black?
- Student does a daddy longlegs bite?
Bugscope Team They might if you provoked them, but usually they will eat pests or other spiders
Bugscope Team Clarissa daddy longlegs have tiny little fangs and very likely could not penetrate your skin. They are usually not aggressive, either.
- Student can some spider make you pass out
Bugscope Team Yes, some spiders have systemic poison that can cause particularly sensitive people to pass out.

- Student can spider kill you
- 9:21am
- Student oh thanks annie
Bugscope Team you are welcome
- Student can bees get on spiders?
- Student do they use there claws to gramb on people

- Student a wolf spider
- Student do spider scream

- Student what is the biggest spider
- Student Thank you ,Scot
- Student hey chaos why do ticks egsist and why do they suck so much blood and make you pass out when you get bit?
Bugscope Team Ticks usually don't make anyone pass out from loss of blood. The only way that you would pass out from a tick bite would be if you were so scared and shocked at the sight of a tick that you passed out from fright.
- Student is this a fruit fly?
Bugscope Team this is a small house fly
- Teacher we have a student wondering what larva isis
Bugscope Team A larva is an immature form of an insect. A caterpillar is a butterfly larva.
- Student is the white thing his nose?

- Student they scot how many part do a fly have
- Student what happend between its eyes
- Student is there a speacial type of fruit they have to eat or can they eat any type of fruit?
- Student where are the eyes
Bugscope Team you can see one of the eyes-- it's really big and is the lightest region of the head, the other one is on the other side of the head, more towards the background
- Student how many legs do they have
- Bugscope Team Nyaisha had asked earlier why the images we get from the scanning electron microscope are only black and white. This is because we are using electrons rather than light to collect images, and the image we see comes from what are called 'secondary electrons' that are ejected from the sample. Those electrons are attracted to a detector and show up as signal, in shades of gray. So we do not see coloer, which comes in wavelengths of light.
- Student is there any bugs in anartica?
Bugscope Team according to an article I found: The antarctic midge (Belgica antarctica) is also the only insect and the largest free-roaming terrestrial animal known to inhabit Antarctica, even if it is as big as a rice grain.
- Student this fly is a invertabrate
Bugscope Team Yes, you are right!
- Student how many fly are there
Bugscope Team There are over 100,000 species of flies
- Student where can u see fly head

- Student Annie
Bugscope Team you are welcome

- Student what color are fly's
- Student what is that?
- Student wat is this
- Student well annie but i am scared of creapycrawlers and my mom is scared of spiders of any spesheas
Bugscope Team That is OK--lots of people are afraid of spiders. I am afraid of horseflies--ugh, I hate them.
- Student what are the spikes and holes
Bugscope Team we were looking at the head of the fly, and the part of the head between the eyes with tiny setae on it is called the 'vestiture.' It also has larger spines that are used to help the fly feel what is touching its face, like a cat's whiskers.
- Student what is ythis

- Student what are there thing are

- Student do flys eat blood
Bugscope Team Some flies do. Mosquitoes, for example, are flies that eat blood. Horseflies also eat blood, black flies eat blood, there are some flies like stable flies and screwworm flies that also eat the blood of livestock.

Bugscope Team yes.

- Student im afriad of horse flies too Annie they ae huge!
Bugscope Team ug. I hate them. I hate how they buzz and follow you around.
- Student what is thias

- Student how can flys smell far far away
Bugscope Team They have specialized setae (hairs) that allow them to detect very very small numbers of scent molecules. They follow the scent as it get stronger until they find the source of the scent.

- Student do it hurt when theybite u
- Student what's this
- Bugscope Team Horse flies have slashing mouthparts that cut into your skin when theyb bite.
- Student what are the twisty things at the bottom
- Student what is this

Bugscope Team Most flies will die if they are not able to escape from the water. They can swim though.

- Student how many fly are they
- Student think you annie
- Student why do horseflys stay by the water
Bugscope Team Alonzo if you wanted to bite large animals, as horseflies do, waiting by the water for them to come and drink would be a good idea.

- Student and it hurts when they bite
Bugscope Team yeah, I know!
- Student how big are they
- Student thanks cate
- Student can they get really big!
- Student how big are horesfly

Bugscope Team Ajah we do not have any frogs in the microscope today. In the past we have looked at tadpoles, but we have to prepare them to go into the microscope so they look good.

- Student where is the nose?

- Student thanks annie

- Student wow they are big
- Student can you show the frog?
- Student how r the micsrope that we use from school diffrent then the ones that you are using?
Bugscope Team Nyaisha we have microscopes like the ones in school but they are often more complex, with extra parts and better lenses. You would not be able to carry them around because of all the cables and cameras, and they are all hooked up to computers.
- Student do you have more bugs

- Student what does fruit flies eat
- Student Whats that?
- Student thanks scot
- Student that bug looks like a bufflo annie
- Student where is the nose?;
- Student why are horse flys so dangous
Bugscope Team They aren't really dangerous. They don't vector very many diseases (compared with mosquitos), but the are aggressive and they have a painful bite. So people are afraid of them, people like me.
- Student where are the horseflies located
Bugscope Team Horse flies are found all over the world. But, not in Antarctica.

- Student what's a horsefly

- Student what is the bigs bug in the eath scot
Bugscope Team Rodney one of the biggest bugs on earth is the goliath beetle, which can be as big as your fist. I think lobsters are big bugs too, but Annie says No, they are not insects -- they are crustaceans.

- Student where do horseflys live

- Student what are the crust dots

- Bugscope Team thank you alonzo
- Student think you scot,cate,andchaos
- Student I Liked That You Took The Time To Answer Our Questions
- Bugscope Team the ridges we see on the scales that make them look kind of like potato chips make what are called 'structural' colors visible in the wings.
- Student bye cate,scot,chaos,annie
- Student see you next time
- Student thank you for telling questions
- Bugscope Team structural colors come from how the ridges reflect light
- 9:58am
- Bugscope Team we are having a problem with the server it seems, sorry :(

- Bugscope Team Hello out there. The microscope controller crashed on us -- we are sorry. We will have to shut down anyway, to work with another set of people.

- Bugscope Team Can you see this message?
- Guest Hello, yes.
- 10:04am
- Bugscope Team kristen you can go to http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/members/2008-116/ to see all the images from today and the chat at any time
