The Project

Project Title Up close and personal-The Woodlouse
Insects To Study Woodlouse
Project Description This transition Year class will be taught by me from January 8th 2004. They did the State Junior certificate last June and are in a gap year before starting their Leaving Lertificate course. This enables pupils and teachers to explore many non exam topics and teachers can choose the course material. I propose to spend January teaching them about arthropods and the woodlouse in particular. Also I will give them information on the electron microscope. I plan to have them use the Bugscope site in addition to other sources. Today I talked to the class about the project and they are to bring in bugs next Monday. On the day of the link up I plan to have the girls view various body parts of the bug. Afterwards they will submit a written report. If it is possible to have a link with Pams school that would be great. We shall use the computer room for most of the January classes so equity should not be a problem. All the class are girls and they are all Irish. Our school is a single sex school having changed from being a convent secondary school 4 years ago to a government owned community school on a new site with a new building. I plan to share what we learn in this project with the Irish teachers who attended the EVE Conference, with the Biology and Computer teachers in our school and with other Biology teachers with whom I have personal contact. All going well I would like to have my 5th year biology class send a flea/tick in late spring as their leaving Certificate course includes parasites. Our computer teacher Noeleen asked for more information about IRMA interface please. Sincerely, Sheila Murphy Head of Science
